Well, thanks for everyone's input on my PC problems. For those that care, the problem turned out to be faulty RAM. Yay.

So I got it back, and its all working, but for some reason win2k is giving me really s***ty framerates in Quake 3 - on a vanilla install of q3 1.27h with all defaults, I'm getting 77fps. shad, on his system (~700 GF DDR), is getting 95.

Mine is a P3 1gig, with the new 815 chipset. This isn't natively supported under win2k, but I've installed both the drivers off the CD I got and the latest ones of intels website - no joy there. Sigh.

When I managed to get it working with the dodgy memory, I was able to get over 130fps (can't remember now) on a default install of q3 (cd version). Now, I'm only getting <100fps.

Anyone got any win2k experience with this mobo?

Guess I'll try installing ME again and seeing if I can get the high framerates I should.

Stupid computers.

WinME and high fps dont usually come in the same sentence.... Use either 98SE or 2KPro. The vsync in ME is rather shiz0r3d. The benchmarks are quite often a tad higher but it doesnt actually feel at all faster to me. In fact it feels really sluggish.

well, I know that WinME supports the 815 chipset natively, so I mainly want to confirm that I wasn't smoking crack when I was getting 130fps out of the box

Installed WinME, and I got 115fps straight away (as compared to 77).

bizarre

and since rb said "WinME and high fps dont usually come in the same sentence"

ive had my c366@550 and gf2mx get over 330 fps in ra3 (when i had com_maxfps on 500, andagp/cpuclk 1/1 in bios) on ME...he did say ususally.
Dunno how it goes in a timedemo though, but trog your framerate should never ever drop from 125fps when com_maxfps is on 125

through some timedemos around people, goddam, what you see in game means jack when comparing.

im getting 150fps even on my system in demo127 and its not even all that spanky, you should be able to beat that with a better processor or a gf1 drr or better.

trog, this will sound like a silly question, but what drivers were you using for your video card under 2k? cos nvidia have different sets of drivers for win2k and 9x... you might have accidently installed 9x drivers under 2k or something.. ?

I'm gonna blame the stupid 815 chipset. I still can't get it working fast under win2k, no matter how hard I try. Sob.

815 motherboard... A specific brand would help :)

As far as ppl running 815 boards, i'm currently running a ASUS cusl2 (815) with my p3 500 at 700, with a ddr gayforce, and it pumps out about 150fps in demo127.

815 m/b's are fine, once you set everything up properly, they run just a little slower than the best bx boards out there.

metal, its a cusl2-c, so basically the same as yours with no onboard video - if you're still at guvs I might bring it down and get you to try installing win2k on it to see if I'm doing something wrong.

Tell me something guys.Do you get frame rates like that just in Q3 or can you get them in CS as well?

I know how you have your pc set up makes a big difference but does it have much to do with the game.I'm lucky to get 30fps playing CS on my pc.

I have a p3 500
tnt2
128 mb ram
and Win98se

As you prolly all know my knowledge on pc's is pretty limited so any simple suggestions on how to get some better performance short of a major upgrade would be greatly apreciated.
