I'm just about to go pick up a new PC - what are my chances of being able to take the Win2k HDD out of my current PC, and stick it in the new one (to avoid reinstalling Win2k)? |

Worked for me. Youll have to sit there a while as it detects the new hardware. It worked for me with ME, and 2k is far more stable so... |

yeh, I think when I put it in, it decided to f*** my 30gig HDD. Now its rife with bad sectores and I can't install anything on it. So I've dug around and found an old 4 gig that I'm trying to set up to make sure its not the new PC itself. I hate computers. |

if the drive sounds like it's "wheezing" it is beyond repair, as the motor is up the proverbial Trog. :( |

usually when windows installs, it sets part of it's kernal up for the chipset u got in ur computer, so if ur changing processor or mobo, then always do a fresh install also NEVER partition a 30Gb hdd as a single 30Gb partiton, some seriously funky s*** goes on then, i reccomend 2x 15Gb partitions. if u cant get it to work then fdisk it into 2 partitions and then type this command fdisk /mbr then format both partitions b4 installing win2k hope that helps |

I have got a IBM DeskStar before QGL, 30g/7200rmp one. I took it along to qgl, and FDisk/Formatted it so i could dump some files on to it, it wasnt even in my hands for 24 hours and it didnt work for some reason, each time i rebooted it would loose all partition info again, so i tired it in a firends machine, same problem, but when i removed all hdd's and left it as the master it seamed to format and STAY formatted, it never lost any partition table info. all i know, is if it f***es up again im going to take it back. i wish i could find the reciept to my 8x burner that doesnt go faster than 2x :) |

Trog: go to this page, on IBMs website. It has progs and utils of all kinds.. Apparently it helped one person I know with his drive the same as yours. The low level format util is "wipe" on that site, but I really don't recomment using that.. I've heard it can do some bad things to the Bad Sector "unit" on the hdd. |

Thanks Messiah; I'd actually already found that page and downloaded the Drive Fitness Test thing. That seemed to fix all the bad sector problems (although now I'm suss about the drive in general, sigh). Still no go though. Back to the shop it goes! Thanks to everyone that tried to help, I'll keep you updated (if I ever get back online again) |
