Pyro, i think you are looking for the right thing. though you could probably find a VR for that price. But you can always find the Vl calias or something like that, what sort of cars are you into, turbos or v8s ? cause you could probably find a slr-5000 or a vk 5.0l for that as well.

Don't get one of those f***ing s***house VN VP Commondores... they are buckets of s***.

Get a decent four cylinder - the performance will be almost as good, it'll use TONNES less fuel, cheaper rego etc etc and most good Jap 4 cyls are better quality than those s***ty bombadores. A VR would be much better but still expensive for fuel/rego etc. Something like a late 80's 1.8 litre Pulsar would be good for you.

id probably go for something like a nissan exa, pretty cheap and power and handling are alright. For that sort of budget, im guessing you wouldnt want to spend too much keeping it running and the 4 cylinder will be cheaper to run (fuel and rego). It'll handle better than the commodore anyway although it would lose in a straight line drag :)

my vn ain't all that much more expensive to run than a 4 cylinder... whatcha talking

and yes, the vn is a bucket of s*** :P

but it's still not half bad for what I need... I only wish it was a manual :(

bricks handle better than commodores.

uh i mean the type of brick used to build houses and s***, of course a mini would kick.

that looks like ass
i think big mags on old cars look really dodgy, they do not suit that dato at all. imo too big and shiny :S and the low pro tyres look crap on old cars as well

if petrol money isnt a problem then get a nice Vr or Vn commodore... preferably v8 :)

i got a v6 and its about 35 bucks a week on fuel which is just as good as a 4cyl imo.

stick with the POWA :)

VN's don't have power... they are f***ing gutless pieces of s*** taht handle crap, look s*** and and fall apart.

power doesnt matter when its a big heavy bucket of s***. wait till you get to a corner, jump on the brakes (which are s***) and then try to go around the corner with any amount of speed.

Save to 10k and you will have a lot more options. If you can get that last bit before May then you could import a 2l 180sx which normally costs about 18k here. After May importing becomes a bit more expensive.

AnaRoT knows where the power's at.... :P

Whenever I see oil stains on someone's garage floor, I ask them if they own a VN Commodore, and 9 out of 10 times, the answer is yes.

For $6000 you could get an awesome Mini, and they rock!

buy yourself a toyota celica or a pulsar, reliable affordable and can be done up when u save up some cash, for a uni student a holden would be too expensive to run. i agree that VN's and VP's are f***ed.. worst commodores ever made in my opinion.

dont go and buy a datsun, sure they were advanced for their time but now there just kids cars.. get something with twin cams and no rust.

Toyota and nissan are reliable cars.

Personally i own a tarago atm, its good for what i do and my band but im close to buying a R33 Skyline

If you've got a reliable car at the moment stick with it and keep saving.

If you have a bucket of pus that needs replacing buy a cheap, decent four cylinder. Some geminis are really good, or a racing barina ;) You could probably also get a 20 year old Pulsar/lancer/celica that is in good nick for way less than $6,000. And for the love of god steer clear of minis and volkswagons. A mini costs more now than it did when brand new ;P

What he said.. even tho i like commodores.. If you are a student then your mad not getting an old Pulsar or something like that.. save sooo much $$$

I like the "buy a $1k gemini and spend the rest on beer" idea the best. Otherwise you can't go wrong with an utterly reliable 1990ish corolla csi.

Yeah Eddy, you could probably find a 90-92 Corolla Seca CSi or maybe a CSX for that sort of money. The CSX has a 100kW 1.6L twin-cam motor standard. My friend had a 92 CSX and it went hard. :)

sLinKy, the CSX was the luxury model, it had the same 76kw as the CSi
The one your thinking of is the SX and GTI models with 100kw :) still the 76kw cars only had to shift 1050kg so it hit 100kph in about 10 seconds. The GTI and SX hit 100 in about 8.5 seconds which is a hell of alot faster than any v6 VN and about the same as the V8's.

Reason for originally saying vn /vp was that they are easy to come by and fairly cheap, however if there are 4 cylinders that can perform the same or almost as good for that money then that might be the best option.. I got a 81 datsun bluebird atm that runs fine but like I said im just looking around for a more modern or better alternative

No ones mentioned the Toyota Carolla, its lite on petrol it goes well and it gets you from a to b, and they r pretty damn cheap, however it seems like you want a car with a little grunt, so its probably not the best in that sense.

my sister the other day just boght a little suzuki swift .. a nice little "girls" car .. with gti kit, mags, tinted windows etc

Mum has a Pulsar, and it's a pretty powerful little thing. Runs well. but sif you wouldn't buy a nice Gemini or Torana for $1000 and spend some more doing it up! Get the car, put some nolathane under it, bigger wheels, import engine (say, a 2.0L DOHC fuel injected number for the Gemini), nice exhust (not loud, just a nice note), you've got a nice car.

Haha Haha Haha... you were joking right?
Uhm, double how much he has, and you'll get a DECENT SLR 5000, s*** bawx SLR-5000's sell for around 6-7k, decent ones sell for 12k.

'An AnaroT, what did I see in a car mag a week ago? a naturally aspirated Stocko LJ Torana doing a wheelstand (ok so it wasn't huge, but both wheels were clearly off the ground =P) Rubba-Chikin saw it too =P

I wasn't getting at anything, just saying I saw it, just cause it said
'An AnaroT, what did I see in a car mag a week ago?
doesn't mean it was putting u down or anything... christ, would you like me to rephrase it for you in a way that might not seem so negative?

"Hey, AnaroT Mate... Guess what I happened to accidently stumble across ina car mag a week ago, thought it might be worth a mention..."

So much negativity in the way you perceive people's written text AnaroT, not everything is meant badly =)

expects uneccessary flame

So don't, and just take something that's handed to you for once (that wasn't even bad) =)

Cheers,

I don't give a s*** how you put it, I meant that its bulls*** and there is no way that the LJ could have been standard. Just cos its in a magazine (prolly some shady try hard mag) doesn't mean its the truth. If it was an LJ, and was doin a wheel stand, then it wouldhave almost certainly been a V8 - there is no such thing as a standard LJ with V8 (apart from some XU2's that were made but never sold).

Dont' be so sensitive ffs.

nah, the Engine was Stocko I meant, meaning it wasn't Supercharged or Turbo'd. Of course the engine wasn't factory standard. but it was a naturally aspirated stcok 308 V8... =) nothing more, nothing less... the LJ's weigh even less than the LH/UC, I think they're under a tonne from memory?

edit:- Actually when I re-read your follow up post AnaroT you didn't really flame =) well done =)

Yeah any car can do a wheelstand if you find a sharp enough crest :P

Yeah Corpse I think you're right, I had my facts confused there. Sorry about that.

$6k buy yourself a camry, it'll get you somewhere without breaking down or the bank. Or if you want to go fast, buy a Motorbike, pwere to weight will eat all cars you can buy for 6k.

Yeah but likelyhood of dying on a bike is a lot higher...

Camry is a good but f***ing boring suggestion :)

GET A VOLVO!!!! :P
