Posting because I want a recommendation of a new MP3 play app, I've been using Winamp since forever on my android devices however it's been randomly stopping mid play and doesn't pickup where it left off so I've cracked the poo poo's with it and looking for another music playing app.

In terms of games

Hill Climb Racing - so addictive yet so simple, I've maxed out all cars and opened all tracks
Real Racing 3 - it's free and is like a grand tourismo for phones, freaking amazing!!

Apps:

Google Hangouts has now replaced G-Talk so check your play store to update it, seems cool.

I don't usually install many apps so that's all I've got to recommend at the moment, aside from whatsapp and viber but I am sure most people are over those.

ohh actually Swiftkey for the keyboard is awesome sauce imo

Even though I don't use Android actively day to day any more, I agree Swiftkey is the best KB for Android. It's one of the apps I wish they ported to Windows phone :/

Only problem I have with DoubleTwist (doesn't affect the mobile app) is the desktop app for syncing bundles Open Candy. I hate apps that force you to install things you don't want.

I just ordered my first Android phone, it should be arriving this week.

What are the absolutely essential apps I should start with?

I find I'm using Google Keep more and more. Looking forward to hangouts replacing whatsapp and being able to SMS with it

The main non-stock apps I have that I can't live without is K9 - a much better email client that does proper offline mail caching.

Poweramp - best music player on android
swiftkey - awesome keyboard. on sale atm

re googlehangouts - if you have a lot of people on gTalk then maybe.. but atm it's lacking really basic quality of life options that seem to be a total oversight ie: ability to see people's status, and ability to sort by online offline.

nova launcher - for extreme customisation
google keep - because it is awesome and you can access it on your desktop

unlock bootloader and root phone - if nothing else but to have access to titanium backup (excellent backup/restore app)

es file explorer - for browsing the innards of your phone, also allows you access to connected computers to your LAN and subsequently being able to stream anything from your computer as well.

dice player - video player that has played everything ive thrown at it.

3cx droid desktop - i use it to interface with my phone while im at a desk. allows me to text with my phone via a browser.

Dolphin broswer, google chrome or firefox (if you want adblock)
reddit app
Music volume EQ - much better than the standard EQ for a galaxy s3
car buzz - all the latest car news and cool videos)
PC monitor - top notch app always getting new updates
Super Dimmer - AWESOME app if you use the phone in bed and your SO is whinging about the screen being too bright, or if you are in the movies. (goes past standard dimness without rooting)
Speed test - because bragging rights
Photo locker - hide those naughty pics in a seperate app with a pin or password
atorrent - yeah
air droid - link with pc for phone control (good for when at work or sometihng)
pixlr express - image editing
remote control for winamp - if you use winamp why not
time lapse creator - cool little app for making time lapse videos and works really well.
VLC direct pro free- vlc remote control with no bs.

Some of the current 3rd party apps I have on my GS4 that I use often or think deserve a mention.

AirDroid - (Amazing app, overcomes the BS lack of USB mounting in newer Android phones, which force you to use MTP)

KeePassDroid - (combined with KeePass for the PC, best damm password manager I have used)

Tasks - (3rd party app for Google Tasks)

Poweramp - (or PlayerPro)

tTorrent - (just started using, not sure about it yet. Torrenting on the phone saves on power bills)

SwiftKey
RealCalc
GPS Test
Unified Remote

poweramp sounds better

doubletwist appears to have no equilizer unless you buy it, at least poweramp gives you 15 day trial period to use the full version...

I've got:
3d flip clock & world weather
3d sense clock (don't ask me why both, because even I don't know)
adfree (yeah you can hate me but when ads mimic apps, f*** you)
calender (strangely enough I had to actually download and install google calender. Samsung eh)
Colornote
Droidwall (I'm on prepaid, it lets me limit stuff to wifi only)
ES file explorer (absolutely HATE the new interface)
ES task manager
Facebook (I'm a whore)
flashlight (dunno why, I never use it)
galaxy charging current (tells me how many mA my phone is charging at
gsam battery monitor
gumtree
hacker's keyboard (full qwerty with arrows up in this biach)
inssider
jellybean keyboard (for some reason)
navigon (because it was free)
network signal info (gives 3g signal strength etc)
speed test app
stopwatch & timer
terminal emulator
ulysse speedometer
wifi analyzer

How does the remote find phone feature work on air droid? app looks promising!

Also to keep a track of my usage i use Call Meter 3G - Essentially you enter your call costs/flagflalls and it keeps track of your usage to the T. It has been supremely accurate for me and I dont need to wait for the carriers bs 1 day wait.

How about apps that dont replace stock apps?

I've got:

Sleepasandriod - sleeping program that monitors your cycles and supposedly wakes you up at the right time
Jefit - workout up, wish they would remodel it so it looks shiner. works well though
YNAB - interfaces with the program on my mac. Best budget app ever IMO
StuckonEarth - cool app that interfaces with google maps and shows people holiday pics.
MyFitnessPal - calorie counter

Can't find any other app that really makes me use it every day or changes the way I behave.

flashlight (dunno why, I never use it)

but when you do, you feel like a boss. also helps when you get a widget version so you dont even need to enter the app.

Great suggestions ITT.

Game I'd add is Zen Pinball. Not free but you get one table free and it's a good one.

It's a bit exxy when its retail price but the player has so many options and the equalizer and tone settingsr will make even s*** earphones sound a lot better

yeah that's my point, my phone came with a widget that turns the light on & off so I dunno why I have that flashlight app.

Torrenting on the phone saves on power bills

That's something interesting to consider.

Though, I always sort of presume at a random guess that my computer doesn't draw that much power, because it does sfa to make the room warmer in winter (currently so cold it hurts my fingers to type).

f***ing ay. I love this game, I have the starwars tables and they rock, and for like €1 why not.

Tethering Widget is great if you frequently use the wifi hotspot or tether via USB. One touch on/off to save power when the hotspot isn't needed means no digging through settings menus.

I too am using Keep a hell of a lot more than I expected. Its really quite good.

My latest favourite is Knock2+ for notifications.

I also use:
Action launcher which is a nice improvement to the homescreen while maintaining the original look and feel.
Endomondo: Great for tracking bike rides (and I'm sure all exercise)
Plume For twitter
Spotify and the default google music player

... and of course SwiftKeyX

I installed quiet a few apps like Nova launcher and things I'd never heard of to get this theme working. It's awesome. Can't see me changing it for a long time

Holo cards by Thand.

I went for the black version.

It was my first theme and was a lot of work.

Plume For twitter

Oh yeah, Plume recommendation here as well, it's awesome.

BaconReader is pretty good if you frequent reddit.
NRL Live 2013 is damn good too for catching match highlights (free) & full matches as well if you subscribe.
My ebook reader preference (RIP Stanza!) is FBReader primarily, or Aldiko.

RealCalc has already been mentioned
Screen Filter is another app very similar to what Super Dimmer does.

Anyone got some good app suggestions for video playback?

There are so many options and people have their own preference.

I've peronsally tried mx player and dice player but dice player won out and im continue to use it every day for the past year without fail. It has played everything and the interface to adjust brightness in video is very good (swiping up/down on the rhs empty space). it also has a cool option of overlaying over the top of your normal windows so you can message and browse while the video plays on a part of the screen. Good for those videos you dont need to pay attention to.

VLC. It's still in beta but plays everything I've thrown at it without fail (except a couple of weird MKVs that seem to not play properly on my WDTV either).

Just installed Airdroid on an old phone. Wow! Amazing functionality and the web interface kicks ass. A little scary in terms of permission requirements though.
