Had a meeting with the Director and they've told me to prepare for the worst, though they apparently still don't know what's happening for the next few weeks... very frustrating.

I might throw out my creds too. I currently work in a Storage/Virtualisation team, currently working on vSphere 5 upgrade and working with EMC array's. I have some MCITP certs and previously worked in the AD/Exchange/MIIS and some Enterprise System teams too on critical SQL clustered apps..

I heard last week that some QLD Health admin desk jockey was getting paid a doctors salary for years.

contractors need to accept this is the risk part baring fruit after all that reward time on higher salary than staff. i dont feel sorry for contractors that complain about losing their job.

Not always true - if you try and find a job and all a recruitment company offers you is full time short contract work which keeps getting indefinately extended, and there seems to be nothing else, you don't exactly have many choices.

Anyway the point is i didn't get paid better in that contracting position than the people who were employed directly by department of communities, because most of that 'bonus' was garnished by my recruiter.

Depends on all kinds of factors really. I mean in an ideal world yeah contractors should get paid more but reality is that it changes purely based on market supply and demand of labour forces.

Pity because it's often the contractors who are less* useless than the permies

I have noticed a lot of "full time" positions going recently in gov organisations (I guess trying to fill the holes starting to be left as they can justify the FTE). Keep an eye on seek man. Going to be a saturated market for a little bit I would expect with this change so they will probably be filling quickly.

your best bet is to get in touch with several recruitment agencies. Hays IT, Finite, Hudson and Data#3 have all been very helpful to me in the past. Do a decent resume with a concise skills matrix and pwnage cover letter and you should land something in 4-6 weeks. I've been in my current role for about 2 months, turned down 2 other jobs for this one. Theres a plethora of work out there but it might start to get a little tight with all the movement in the public sector - i ama wintel/vmware/EMC/cisco admin.

I got told by two different recruitment companies that a skills matrix is a waste of time. They preferred to see experience and qualifications. That was my experience. Anyone can say they have a skill but you need to have something to back it up. A lot of the time I was doing interviews I was being told that I didn't have enough I.T qualifications despite having the experience. They seemed to be obsessed with certifications. Going to get myself some now I have scored a full time job. No more contract work for me, yay.

Well I now there is a job at OSR at the moment as one of my team mates is thinking of applying. Not sure on the freeze but I'm sure they are still filling jobs, maybe the freeze is on the creation of "new positions". We are gov owned crop so not really up with all the politics at the moment :p

Not sure where you work but where I am, our admin and reception etc get paid A02. A04 is reserved for people who are higher.

I have a business degree and about 7-8 years experience in providing I.T support. Do you think this is a sufficient leg up to move into a project manager role?

Also, does anyone know of some courses at TAFE that are applicable to system administration. I know I can look this up but I am hoping someone on here has done something similar at TAFE and can provide some advice.

there are several cert 3's available from TAFE specifically on Systems Administration but ideally you would want a diploma or adv. dip. that encorporates these.

for a PM role you should really look into doing something like a Prince2 course ftw.

really iTOM? I've seen AO4 PA/EA's, but usually i wonder what they're doing on s***ty AO4 money because they actually know more than the exec that they're working for.

80% of admin birds are AO2, and i've worked in every region of the state for the public service. They aspire to the 'lofty heights' of AO3 generally.

If you're really desperate, I work for DETE. Our service centre is constantly recruiting. I think you start off at AO3 doing password resets then if you show an ounce of brain activity or skill you'll quickly get picked up and moved to level 2 or 3.

I'm not sure how it all works in there as I work at Regional Level. Fark, only 8 IT jobs on Smartjobs.

I applied for at least 20-30 I.T government jobs over the past 6 months. Wrote cover letters and I have the experience and I have tertiary qaulifications.

I still didn't get anything back more than an e-mail. It has always been impossible to get into the public service unless you know someone. Friend of mine works for some department, can't remember. He basically said they just advertise the positions because they have to and in almost all cases they are already filled in some manner.

The people orchestrating this are the full time workers. It's like the mafia.

Learn your Agile PM methodologies ( Scrum, Kanban, etc ) maybe do a certified scrum master course. Get yourself some skills with systems like cobbler/puppet/chef and maybe dive into openstack/cloudstack, learn some coding, Python, Ruby, maybe some node.js and get yourself a devops gig.

I have to say though (aside from the examples you cited) the SC seem like a good way to winnow out the terminally lazy people. To make it the whole way through one of those you have to be pretty f***ing dedicated - I've only done one and I still remember it as being the most involved ways to apply for a job ever.

yeah same, not after my degree, but a few years back after working in IT for several years. Even went to the extent of getting professional help with writing the selection criteria, didn't make any difference, never heard back about anything.

Then had a mate land a government job through a friend and he didn't have to do any selection criteria.

If you're in a situation to do it, look outside Brisbane to Sydney or Melbourne. Even if it's only a short term 1-2 year gig, there is heaps of jobs going down here for good skilled IT people.

As a quick test I searched on Seek for last 3 days, $70k+ for IT -> Network & Sys admin and there was 29 jobs in Brisbane, 63 in Melbourne and 70 in Sydney. Personally I'd avoid Sydney as it's ridiculously expensive to live in but Melbourne is actually pretty reasonable in terms of cost of living.

Are you kidding? Sure, the first application may be a big effort, but nobody starts from scratch unless they have to.
Selection criteria style application favours those that have built up or have access to banks of answers to common questions, i.e. those that move from one public service placement to another.
Assuming the position isn't filled before it's advertised, as was already mentioned.

Quoted for truth! I am currently working on a project with integration of xen with clearos core and cloudstack then using spacewalk to push out the shiz. I need the time to also look into puppet but the thing holding it up is I need more than 10 nodes and about 12mths testing.
