Hi guys, http://img607.imageshack.us/img607/9121/athad900.th.jpg http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/9845/dt880lrg.th.jpg thought i'd throw up a question regarding these two headphones - who's got a pair and who loves them lol? So first of all my situation - Im currently looking for the step up from my Beyerdynamic DT234Pro which have been very faithful. Now I love beyer's so thats why im looking at the DT880. I have a small amp - fiio e5 which I mainly sue to power some futuresonic atrio's and I dont think it has enough grunt to power the DT880. However its perfect for the AD900. im looking to purchase next week - I can pick up the AD900s for about $250 , and they Beyerdynamics for $300. So cost is similar - however with the DT880's i've gotta pick up an amp. Currently im looking to use these for a combination of games (BF3 mainly lol), Music (Techno / trance / vocal trance / house ect) and a small amount of movies (maybe). Oh yeh - and my source will be my pc - soundcard Auzentech prelude. So i'd love to hear who has a pair of either of these headphones and why they love em! (also if the sound stage / imaging is good for gaming - running cmss-3d). Cheers =) |

Hey, I have the ATH-AD700's and they are amazing and from everything I've read and heard the 900's are the same but better. The sound stage is really good making them perfect for gaming. They're very comfortable, I normally hate headphones but can wear these for a long time. The 700's don't need an amplifier which makes them great for the PC but i'm unsure about whether the 900's need one. Next pair I will most likely upgrade to the 900's so thats what I'd suggest. I have nothing but praise for the 700's. |

900's are the bomb diggity
bit suss on headphones you need a headphone amp for as i think the quality of your amp also comes into play a fair bit |

I'am after a pair of Beyerdynamic headphones DT 770 PRo model, but am in a bit of a pickle, i dont know whether to purchase the 80ohm or 250ohm version. I will be using it mainly for producing music on my pc, and sometimes for games and the iphone. Would i need an amp either way, i have a stock motherboard soundcard too! thanks |

I see these threads a lot on various forums and the OP always has a budget, but what if money was no object, is there such a thing as "the best" headphone/headset for gaming?

Hi Guys, Thanks heaps for the feedback - The ultrasone stuff looks incredible - think I may remortgage the house Muhahahhaha. Nah I think the 900's are the way to go. I mean I dont mind getting an amp but that means basically I can only run those headphones (with enough power) from home. I Love the beyer products - looked at the mmx300's but I decided to go away from a mic so I have portable headphones also lol. (Dont wanna look extra geeky in public). Yeh headphonic = a great site. however Im probably gonna be cheap and get from topbuy. I recently picked up a heap of camera lenses from them and their service is top notch, and for the 900's they are about the cheapest in aus! =) |

Ok so I thought I'd report in - today went down to addicted to audio in melbourne and had a listen through their range. I tried the sennheiser HD600 / Bayerdynamic DT990 and the AD 900's .. everything was tried through a woo audio tube amp (very very nice btw! I want one!) Anyway I found both the sennheiser and AD900's on a par. The DT990's are bass heavy which is cool but I found the mids and treble no where near as sharp. The AD900's lack on the bass and the HD600s were more balanced. To be honest I would be happy with any of them , but the price of the AD900's was about 100 cheaper than the other two.. So.. SOLD! So far listened to some spongle / Daft punk & Justice and all I can say is WOW! There is so much more you can hear, the detail is incredible! About to jump into some BF3 to see how that is =) so yeh - I rate em highly! Very nice headphones! Ohh yeh and caveboy - massive is the word! Not only that being an open headphone they pump out so much sound , I'd never use them on a plane!! |

Hey Faceman - im no expert but I thought i'd use that expert, google, to answer your good questions. It seems that you can do that - but the main reason people run headphone amps is the inabiliity to drive the headphone from a normal source (i.e soundcard / ipod). Most of the issues are caused by elecrical resistance (ohms) with a lot of the high end headphones being up around 600ohms (the AD900's I bought were 32ohm therefor easy to get good sound/volume out of, at 600 ohms you can expect from a normal source very low volume - if drivable at all.. additionally underpowered headphones wont be able to play the details that make them shine). The other reason it seems is that normal hi-fi amps seem to scrimp on the circuit that the headphone out is connected to, so therefore you aren't getting the power/quality your amp is outputting to your speakers. So I guess its like this , sure you can snipe with a shotgun - but its not gonna do so well. So yes you would go from dvd into headphone amp. Often headphone amps have a DAC onboard - (digital to analog converter), so if you wanted to listen to some music off your pc - the signal would be sent by usb instead of out of your soundcard. The reason behind this is the quality of sound - basically the soundcard is processing the sound (from say flac to sound) and it puts its own signature on it. the DAC keeps the sound true to the recording, so if you are a music lover - ad headphone amp / dac combo would be a way to go. What does it do that a reg home theatre amp does - well its more the headphone amp doesnt do a lot the home theartre amp does (i.e 7.1 / dolby anything ect). However it specialises in sound output for the headphones. So if you are picky about sound and you wanted the best sound from headphones - you would look that direction. The other thing is size (depending on unit), often the headphone amps are 10cm across and 20cm deep , where as your reg amps are 40cm wide and 40 cm deep. In saying that you can get some large valve amps (like the one pictured above). |

Wow, where can you get DT880 for $300 from?!
I even tried sourcing these from HK and they were $370. I'm really leaning towards the DT990 though, as bass is more predominant. I find my asus xonar essence stx lacks bass with the AD700's. Hook me up with some Beyerdynamics! |

Does the DT990 have as good clarity as the AD900? i listened to a few and none seemed to have the same crispness as them, they had more bass yeah, but the clarity was no wear near the same

Hey scoobs - I found listening to the DT990's no where near as clear as the AD900's in the mid and treble, it just didnt seem as crisp, however the DT990 are more of a bass monster. still nice - but i picked up the AD900's over them! |
