Pre POTUS Newt has promised to make the moon a US state as soon as the colony he establishes by the end of his second terms population reaches 13000 . Yay.

Ya know... I dont get it, why put Man on the Moon then stop ?

There is something strange about the whole Moon missions thing.
It was so important to prevent Russia getting to the Moon first yet now China is about to do what America should have been doing 30 years ago.

Just imagine if the budgets for The War on Muslims had been used to colonise The Moon ?

Pretty sure it was just a race to say 'yeah we are the best country we could go there everyday if we wanted but we dont want to"

I cant even remember what the excuse was to stop launches, i think it was something to do with 'costing too much'

Maybe the americans should stop paying for the ridiculous army aircon bill and double the NASA funding...

Would be nice to see a world that is united and wants to explore out into space instead of fighting over what bit of land/what religion everyone is...

i wish there was as much chance of newt gingrich becoming potus as there is of humans colonising the surface of the moon. ie: 0.

Yeah since the yanks must feed the military industrial complex they created it would be a nice change to see them pretend to do space things again instead of dropping iron bombs on everyone.

I don't see why you would want to live on the moon anyway, the beaches are terrible.

The moon mostly comes out at night. Mostly.

Anyway, what's so important about setting up a base on the moon? Seems like a waste of time.

Slashdot tells me that he made this "promise" while doing a tour in Florida. So he is merely pandering to the existing Florida space industry, which as you may know, is really really huge (remembering the shuttle flew from there). So this seems like another random election promise.

How he can POSSIBLY deliver on that given the US financial situation at the moment, I don't know.

I don't know how Republicans can take a potential presidential candidate seriously when he's been busted cheating on his wife. If he can't take his wedding vows BEFORE GOD seriously then how can anyone who aligns themselves as a typical god-fearing Republican think he will ever keep any promises?

I would love to think there's a Republican who takes science and the space industry seriously though, but I don't believe this guy is someone who would actually take us back to the moon.

yeah, that was my take too trog as soon as the article i read said that he made the speech in a small town on florida's 'space coast'. made up some bulls*** about them possibly petitioning to be the 51st state of the union after they had 13,000 people living in the colony too.

I'm not convinced Newt didn't get to see an advanced screening of 'Iron Sky' and thought "hey, now there's a great idea!".

Scenario.

China gets to moon.
Establishes a colony or base.
USA deem this an invasion as it is there moon.

I used Hotspot shield to have a look at the 25th January show and it seemed to work, I had to disable it for regular browsing though.

Yeah, Obama looks the more than likely candidate for the job. Not really under much pressure is he? A few whackos and a guy that makes some sense.

Have there even been 13000 people in space total?

First google result says 500ish total.

Bad Astronomer delivers his verdict:
Gingrich’s words were both transparent and hollow. I knew right away what he was claiming was simply not possible, either financially, technologically, or politically. Take your pick. And it was also clear to me that no matter how you slice it, NASA would get screwed royally if his Moon base plan were implemented, since it would mean billions of dollars moved away from NASA projects to finance this.
and
...his plan would destroy NASA.

Yeah I want to go for a holiday to Mars, Sounds pretty rad. Do we even have the tech to have people survive on the moon? I know that people are working on that but I doubt anyone could fesably put people on there for extended amounts of time. Also have to ask is what do we get out of it? some more space rocks to study? Cheese mines? epic jumping castles?

Newt is a crazy old man, If he win the top job, US will be in some trouble.

I heard that the US military plans to invade a nearby black hole. Intelligence shows it contains a weapon of mass destruction.

I really couldn't believe what I was hearing when I first heard Newt talking about moon bases and that's why I spread what he said as far as I could around the interweb, he's fkn crazy.

Jon Stewart did his bit on him but what I found funny was that Ron Paul is actually Magneto from the Xmen, no one realised until the helmet was put on him,

Newt is challenging China.
If China starts building bases on The Moon what happens next ?
Weapons on The Moon that can target Earth ?

The Moon is the high ground, you never allow you enemy to take the high ground.

Moon bases are literally pie in the sky, the moon is outside the Earth's magnetosphere and is bombarded with radiation. Any moon base would need extensive shielding or would have to be underground. The Yanks are good but they're not into lunar excavation and construction just yet. The real fight is for low earth orbit where the magnetosphere protects satellites and space stations from space weather, that's where the US is vulnerable.

CBF reading links, anybody got the short version? How many people and what they wanna do? They talking just a few scientists doing experiments or a thriving little community?

Sounds pretty sweet but surely there are better things to spend money on? I also keep having flashbacks to certain Total Recall scenes on Mars.

Also, i like Kaizers idea of floating bases in the sky. That would be bad ass. Imagine a floating casino or strip club like in Just Cause 2!
