So who's seen this?

I saw it on the weekend and it is bad ass. Definitely one of the best films I have seen for a long time. A lot to take away from it and it doesn't spell everything out for you.

Action is incredibly intense yet directed without the over the top bulls*** we're use to seeing. Compared to many recent war movies there's no usage of crappy muslim chanting with the slow motion video, explosions aren't over the top and no over dramatic gun fight scenes. Everything in it feels very real and matter of fact.

Characters are interesting - you can see the egos at play without any cheesy bulls***. A great snapshot into life in a warzone and the toll it takes mentally.

I am surprised it wasn't released in the major cinemas because there is nothing particularly 'arty' about it. Anyways - highly recommended from me!

Yeah I've never heard of this an apparently it might win best picture at the Oscars.

Seen it. Fantastic movie.

It reminded me a bit of Generation Kill. It certainly puts Avatar to shame.

This movie has been around since 2008 - it originally did all the film festivals before being released mainstream, thank f*** some distribution company (I assume) picked it up otherwise it might not have made it to the mainstream cinema.

Yep awesome movie, watched it when rev told us about the advanced screening. lol @ how long it took to get to AUS.

Yeah i watched it over the weekend. Definitely one of the better war movies out there. Every scene was so bloody intense. That scene close to the end where Sanborn was telling James that he's done with that type of work and wants a child was very emotional. One very minor gripe i had with the movie was the lil iraqi kid's accent. It kept changing from an overly strong iraqi accent to full "sup mah nigga you wanna buy sick dvd's?!?" He could've been putting it on to make a sale but it didn't sound believable, but hey whatever. I didn't even mind the whole american heroism thing cause it was put to such realistic effect.

Definitely an awesome watch and highly recommended.

I must have missed something with this movie. It went f***ing nowhere and made no sense towards the end.

What the hell was with the DVD kid? They found him dead with a bomb in his body, the main guy goes to some house, gets hit in the head with a frying pan, then the kid shows up again the next day asking him to play soccer?

Also the part where they are called to do a recon after the bomb went off at night.

"The terrorists are up there! Lets go get them!"
"Wtf sir we're technicians, that's not our job?"
"f*** that lets go!"

So 3 bomb technicians go up there, one gets shot, and goes home. Everyone shrugs their shoulders?

Also, the dude's first day on the job. Throws a SMOKE GRENADE so people can't see him, then wanders on down and defuses the bomb? No explanation?

Don't get me wrong, there were some great scenes in the movie, but movie of the year? f***ing c'mon.

I agree with those criticisms, lots of bits were pretty nonsensical and not sufficiently explained. They were still awesome scenes despite that though. It's basically the climatic bomb defusal scene from any given action film , except like 10 of them in one movie.

The surround sound in the film was the best I've heard in ages. The choppers and planes etc flying over during the tense scenes, so good.

Worst movie ever, do yourself a favour and watch 'The Room' instead.

It was just to show how wreckless he was and how much little regard he had for standard procedures.

It showed that James was courageous in confronting the cab driver. Perhaps the cab driver was an idiot and instead of turning around he decided to speed through and get away? i dunno, that was a bit of a wtf moment but it was cool seeing this dude in a bomb suit pointing some sort of 9mm at a suspected suicide bomber while everyone was watching in disbelief.

I think the cabbie was just an angry Iraqi. He wasn't a terrorist but he was on the borderline.

This is a good film with solid acting and directing. However it doesnt deserve all the praise being heaped upon it.

Oh yeah and also the sniper battle. That was a cool scene, but I don't understand how they can show the EOD guy (read: NOT A f***ING TRAINED SNIPER), missing multiple shots against stationary targets, and then nailing the guy RUNNING away right in the head?

I thought he missed the guy running and got him the second time. Plus the stationary targets (inside the house) were moving in and out of sight and weren't as exposed as the guy that was running.

Yeah but he hit the wall of the building 2-3 times. Even if they were in the window at that time, he still would have missed.

I'm nitpicking I know, it was just another dumb element to an overall dumb movie that should not be getting the praise that it is.

All i know is i got my money's worth (even though i didn't pay for it) but sux2bu if you paid for it and didn't enjoy it.

I don't see why I can eat my words - the movie wasn't anywhere Oscar worthy. Was it just a slow year for movies or something because I missed why it was so good. Guy gets killed, replacement is a cowboy, does some crazy stuff, annoying Iraqi kid turns into a bomb, the end.

You're probably right, there wasn't alot of decent movies released last year. The others I mentioned were equally as good but I can see different types of people not liking different parts of those movies whereas Hurt Locker is fairly solid from all aspects.

I played golf today with my mate who hadn't seen the Hurt Locker so we went after golf.

I haven't been to the cinema in fkn ages... $17 a ticket WTF!!

But yeah I had already seen this movie twice, but went along for the big screen experience, f*** me the sound was awesome!! Nothing beats seeing a kick ass movie at the cinema

(even if it costs ~$25 by the time I got an ice cream and a bottle of water)

The hurt locker won some Oscar for sound. Unfortunately I only heard it through my crappy TV speakers. Need to look into a home theatre setup - but that's another thread.

Heh I liked that scene, reminded me of the original Delta Force game, where to pick off guys from a kay or two away if you were a newb you'd need to fire off a few shots first to get a feel for how much the bullet will drop due to the distance and how much it will go left/right due to the wind. Once you got the hang of it you could hit moving targets even though you'd have to put the crosshair nowhere near where the target is (alternatively you could just adjust the scope).

The kid in the building obviously wasn't as newb as the US snipers as he was nailing every shot.

What had me f***ed in that scene was why they didn't reposition?
the whole time I was watching it I was screaming at the tv "f***ing move to another spot!!" until I got clipped across the ears for ruining it.

Awesome movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

edit: the whole theme of the movie was the main character's addiction to the thrill of detonating bombs and the other high stress situations associated with that job. basically every scene demonstrates his recklessness and yearning for higher impact engagements.

the bit at the end... well he looked just like a caged bird. i don't know if he was like that before joining the army or if the army did it to him.

I felt sorry for the other blokes he was working with that pretty much thought this cowboy dude was going to get them killed.

Obviously it's a fictionalised story as real bomb defusing from all reports is days/weeks of boredom punctuated by absolute terror. I'm envisaging Hurt Locker portrayed defusal careers kinda like the movie Swordfish portrays IT jobs.

This movie was fail.

I enjoyed this film. Wasn't over the top and the acting was great.

Hurt Locker was good but it wasn't great. By the end I was hanging for it to finish because it was starting to drag. Same with Basterds.

Yeah sure, who isn't, but I like a dramatic dialogue driven movie, its just most of the characters in the middle of that movie weren't really very interesting, and I didn't really give a s*** about them, yet the movie spent sooooooooooo long on them. After introducing us to all these great, interesting characters in the first part of the movie, it then proceeds to serve up an hour of completely boring characters who are doing nothing interesting at all. I dunno, tarantino is a bit hit and miss for me in general, sometimes he turns out stuff that I love, sometimes he seems to get a bit caught up in being an artistic wanker and (imo) the movie ends up suffering for it.

Someone who thinks there is a massive jewish conspiracy and they put hidden messages in movies calling someone a f***ing idiot - irony.

So it had no character progression and the story wasn't anything close to an epic tale...

But even so, every scene in this movie had meaning behind it and was executed pretty flawlessly.

I was amazed at how such an old movie can be so awesome. The acting, the story, the characters, the twists. All amazing and well a head of it's time.

Ive found the standard of acting is better in older movies.
I really believe it is because Actors in the past had to learn their craft from performing on stage whereas now it is just failed models that become actors.

One reason is because they have so much old surplus. They have nothing to fire them with because the rocket/Mortar tubes are all busted and used up, so they make improvised explosives instead.
