anyone using any services that do this? Either VPN or Proxy based. How much are you paying and is the service reliable ?

thinking about it. just trying to work out if it's worthwhile, I'm pretty sure I can get a baremetal machine in a local datacentre pretty cheap and I've been doing some experimentation with OpenVPN and it all seems quite doable.

I just need to work out if it can cover costs, I don't imagine one could charge much more than $5-$10 / month for such a service.

FYI, I have a post I'm preparing about a new VPN service from giganews that I'll be putting up in the next few days - it sounds pretty good

If you've got the know-how to DIY it, www.slicehost.com is a god-send for Aussies looking at US colo

I've set up a test server at home. If anyone's keen to try it out send me a PM with your email address and I'll send you a user/pass and openvpn instructions.

just remember it's my home, so don't use all my bandwidth or go anywhere dodgy.

Hopefully Rudd will quickly pass a law that makes intentionally trying to thawt the Internet filter a crime, then this thread can be added to the blocked list for instructions on crime.

Why not setup a SOCKS5 proxy on a cheap VPS and point your browser proxy configuration at that.

I just wish hulu and a few other things were available. Wouldn't even use it THAT often. Like the other day I was keen to catch Sam Worthington on leno and conan and s*** without having to check when he was on AUS tv. Ended up just getting the 350meg.

if you are only using it a little bit then EC2+putty can be pretty cheap. just bring up an instance when you want a proxy and put it down when you are finished. you can get an instance for $0.085 per hour. expensive if you leave it on 24/7 but if you only use it for 2 hours a day then it is like $5/month.
