Topic: Brownouts - waiting for number three

f***ing brownouts have destoryed a stack of equpiment I may place, and I have suffered some really back luck. My wireless ap blew out along with my modem a while ago.

So in the interests of preventative maintenance I decided to replace out all the batteries across all my ups's and double check all my surge suppression gear, only leaving one of the htpc's and the amp and tv plugged in. And last night 3 low dips in a row, f***ing wham took out my denon amp its now clipping on the left channel my wife tells me. I must have the worst f***ing luck in the world at the moment.

VENTED

So I am waiting for the third and final brownout/spike that with any luck burn the house to the ground in the most unlikeliest scenarios.

Its the old rule I think and it will become the new year res which is "If it isn't f***ing broken don't fix it"

was any equipment connected to your UPS destroyed?
I just bought a couple as the solution to all the brownouts as I've had 2 things die on the weekend.

Thats the kick in the nuts, normally they are connected to my ups's I've got a few because the power here in winter is problematic. But I had only just order more replacement batteries and I expected to take delivery of them either today or tomorrow so I had them apart waiting to smack new batteries in.

Are any of your UPS's hardcore enough to log the issue?

two of them are when they are actually connected not in parts waiting for new batteries. And the gear thats on them is not turned on at the moment its totally unplugged

Brownouts are really bad for things with compressors. Aircons and fridges etc

How would they know? We had some serious voltage drop issues here in the past and Energex put a monitoring device in our meter box to pick up the problem. They came out right away as well since they have to supply voltage within 5%+/- of 230V. We have a voltage meter in our switch board so they took our complaint seriously. They didn't actually find the problem in the 2 weeks they had it running but a month or so latter our pole fuse s*** itself and ended up destroying my A/C that I installed a month before.

A surge protector won't help a brown out and you have to make sure you have the right kind of UPS. You want a UPS that is line interactive with automatic voltage regulation. Some UPSs simply kick in when the power goes out and won't pick up voltage drops. Also if you are like me and switch off your UPS at night then make sure you wait a minute after switching on the UPS before you switch on the PC, I lost a gfx card to switching on my PC too early.

Brownouts are never covered by insurance, you're only covered for fusion damage as a result of lightning strike. You can usually get an electrician to lie on your repair report and say it was lightning though. Just make sure you claim around the time of a lightning storm.

i believe you are correct fpot
ripping off innocent people is okay, but ripping heartless scumbag multinational corporations whos sole role in business is to rip people off, now that's good.

it's not really fraud if it was going to be covered by the original claim, had he been able to prove the brownouts were the cause
it's like a little white fraud

Decided that the excess isn't worth going the insurance route, however at least the store I sourced my amp from is going to rma it, its all good. Work around on the amp is use speaker 1 rc1 a stick speaker two on rc2 b which will at least I have some sound for xmas.

I received my batteries last night on a pallet with some other s***, so been charging them up last night and will de-charge and recharge them today. Got a new ap which is Ubiquiti networks bullet2 600mW which is f***ing awesome and I am thinking of even reviewing it. However I may swap it out for a wisp solution yet, or going down the wds route and smash in a freeradius server, honesty I would prefer to integrate it into my clarkconnect box. Also this thing has some serious range as in I tested it with my omni and its free and clear nearly two streets over so the transmit power is gunna get turned down. The build quality is awesome and having it integrated into one use that goes inline with the antenna is awesome.

I must be lucky, I leave everything on and plugged in during lightning storms and in all the 10+ years I've had computer stuff the only computer I've had that's failed has been my one based on a kt7a motherboard and everyone knows they had dodgy capacitors and would just spontaneously fail anyway. My mate who lives just up the road has had all kinds of electronic stuff die, modems, blenders, tv's, etc. Weird.

Does a UPS add any extra wattage to power usage? I thought about getting a small one for my NAS

Just make sure to get a decent one, not a no-name brand.. And not from somewhere noobish like Dick smith, more-so when they're on special when they've been sitting on the shelf for 1-2 years and they want to get rid of it, with the battery half dead already. Yes you need to replace the battery after 2 years or so or else it doesn't work properly.

My best experience with affordable UPSs has been with Powershield. And their QLD supplier: clicky.

^^Same as whoop above I've never unplugged stuff in a storm ever, infact I usually play on the computer up to the rare occasion the power goes out, but I can count the number of times the powers gone out in a storm on 1 hand, hooray for living close to the city with its reliable power
