I went to an Australian Defence Force recruitment session and performed the aptitude test.

My available job list was pretty big, kind of like my e-peen. Anyway the job that I was interested in is available to me, Air Combat Officer in the RAAF. There is further testing to be done for that position as well as all the Officer Entry stuff, having a Degree gives me big props.

Has anyone here had any experience with the recruitment process? Has anyone here had experience with the Air Force?

My current Job and Industry pays like crap and is pretty boring and the work isn't going to get any more interesting in the future.

The aptitude test was pretty fun. It had a lot of spastically easy questions and a couple that were more challenging, and one that almost no sense to me.

Give it a go for laughs.

You have to go into the center to do it. It is done on their computers with nothing but a mouse... left clicking.

You even get a practice session on how to use the mouse haha.

Don't you have to do psych and physical tests to determine what jobs you could do?

I've got a Science Degree in Biochemistry.

I want to change careers however I can't afford to drop my pay much, I'm paying off a house. So that tightens the options a fair bit. An officer Job in the Air Force pays better then my current job upon completion of training (about 8 months) and is almost comparable during training. Then it goes up pretty quickly for the first 3 years, automatic rank increases.

At first I looked at doing ADFA and doing electronic engineering, however they wont pay me enough while I'm doing it, 35k a year, I need 45k.
So I looked into other jobs and ACO interests me.

Officer entry requires a Psych session to make sure your not crazy, sitting down with a couple of officers and another psych and having an hour long interview making sure you know exactly what your getting yourself into. There is also a comprehensive medical to make sure you wont fall apart.
The fitness test is the easiest part, just run 1 kilometer in a reasonable time.

There is also further testing for specific jobs, such as ACO, or Air Traffic Control, or Airborne Electronics Analyst and so forth.

Had a mate recently complete basic training for Reserves... pretty sure he's just a grunt though. Not sure what he did and how he did it but it doesn't seem like it would be all that useful for you anyway.

Someone on here had family members go through it, sorta recently. For the Army I think though, not Air Force. Would be similar I guess...
From what I hear they were looking into Sniper training so they could be a dirty camper >.>

I was in the RAAF.

First up, if you expect to stay in Brisbane living in your current house forget it. The RAAF will post you where they choose. The only way you could stay is if you were selected and passed the course for the backseater of the new Hornets which fly out of Amberley. If not living in your own place is not a problem then ACO is Aircrew mostly, a BMI of 24 is mandatory and super fitness is an asset.

Otherwise you are looking at postings to Tindal (NT), Darwin, Edinburgh (SA) and Richmond (NSW). Probably a few other bases but I've been out for a while so I'm not exactly sure where everything is nowdays.

Passing the board will be the hardest thing you've done in your life. You have to answer quickly, decisively and be confident. Of course answering the questions correctly will help.

I wish you luck as it is a great life.

Short answer is: Yes

But that is up to the service in which you join. Navy doesn't have many postings as such. Army has a few more. The RAAF has quite a few.

i spent 6 years in the army as an electronics technician, they just give you the jobs on a sheet that they need to fill. Thats about the crust of it. Aptitude testing etc is just to make sure your not a retard.

I worked as a civilian in defence for a while - spending a far amount of time at a base. On the surface, being in the military looks like an awesome career but I always had a sense that I could never do it. From an outsiders point of view, it looked kinda like being back in high school. Way too many rules for my tastes. Plus there is the military "culture" which people either love or hate.

I think if you are going to work with a particular piece of hardware like a jet fighter that would be awesome and the pros would out way the cons.

Read korbs' basic training anecdote if you feel like joining the defence force

I read Korbs' poem it was an excellent read.

Aye the Officer board would be brutal.

I briefly looked into the Super Hornet option, not for me. I'm looking at joining the Battle Management stream and maybe score a seat on one of the new Wedgetails, although probably end up on an Orion or in the ground support unit (whatever it is called).

Are you totally against using your science degree? By that I mean have you looked at direct entry jobs using your current qualifications? Is your motivation that you want to be in an aircraft? Or, do you want something that pays more than what you are doing right now? As a science officer you would walk in as a LT and not have to do that much training.

Yer I really don't like the job that I am doing now and the Air-Force Lab Officer would be very similar. Also it would be a Flying Officer (Air Force version of LT).

If it's aircrew you still need to be on the money fitness wise. Yep they don't have many boggies (Pilot Officers) now days.

I always used to send new officers around on errands; get a can of K9P from dog section, can of propeller pitch from engine section, get a long wait from tool store. Of course it sounds better when spoken rather than written.

Yeh it does. Which is why I asked his motivations. If it is for more money and he doesn't mind doing lab work.. then join as a science officer imo.
