Hi guys

Long time reader, few post :)

just wondering if anyone knows which websites are good to register .com domain names rather than going through MelbourneIT. MelbIT charges $75 per year to register a .com domain o.0

Anywhere else we can do this through?

A lot of the cheap domain places you don't actually own the rights to the domain - they do, and can decide to turn your site into a landing page of ads whenever they want. It has happened to me when the registrar went broke, gave it's domains to another company, and they wouldn't renew the domain.
I still use a cheap dodgy one for .coms but .com.au for a business domain I would go melbourneIT or nothing at all.
For example GoDaddy are known for their dodgy handling of accounts, losing people business etc.., read about them on wikipedia.

hmm, I would like to own the domain as looking at setting up a company and using the domain as the company website.

The domain register websites given above, anyone have had experiences with them? Netregistry seems like a place to register but CrazyDomains have $9 per year register.

thoughts?

for .au's they can't take it away from you, it's registered to your ABN/ACN etc
I have spent considerable time and money securing my .au's

bj.com.au is for sale if anyone wants it, $10k ;)

Agreed that is total scare-mongering garbage what thermite said. Regardless of what happens with your registrar you can always chase things down through AUDA because Australian domain names are heavily regulated.

haha we dont manage .com.au yet

infact thats melbourne IT for you we have been chasing them for awhile trying to get that under management/transfered. i'll drop em a line tomorrow so they can see why i should be manageing it

heineken is a big org and countries get to do what they want.. legal have decided that domains fall under central brand management however..

.com.au is 1 of the 50 or so heineken brand domains left that we are still trying to get under central management..

unfortunately no one knows wtf domains are and how they work.. and are scared when i came calling telling them we are taking it over.. they think i want to take over there hosted content.. or think they will lose their site..

we are also trying to centralise content and onboard countries to the heineken.com platform.. but with over 170 countries its a big job

we are looking at around 70 countries next year coming on board though.. i think .au is one of them not 100% sure though..

if .com.au was under our control i would have received a text message already generated from our check scripts to let me know the site was down.. i'm sure aus are aware of it :P

If you do it right, NetRegistry will pretty much always allow you to get 50% off domain purchases. Google them rather than going to their site directly and you typically get a 2hr offer, stuff like that, it's really very sneaky what they're doing :(

Gees if someone stole your wallet, the police returned it and the perp went to gaol, surely you wouldn't say "f*** this society, i'm out" and jump over to china.

Would you?

easy fix for that is to stop anyone who uses qgl.* to access the forum, their posts don't show up for anyone using the ausgamers domain

but don't take away our fun

I don't think that's likely, pretty sure they're still riding the posts from the old trolls at QGL. The green forum would be pretty desolate without the rabids from the blue forum.

I went with CrazyDomains as I am trying to hold the name while I set everything else up. Since it was the cheapest and I can transfer it around when I start to host it. $9 for a .com compared to $75 from MelbourneIT to park a name...

once you register it, it's yours
you don't have to "hold it"

I have plenty of domains that are sitting inactive without even having nameservers active on them
