Did you read the book Obes, or are you just trolling again?

When Death is doing the Hogfather's job he is the Hogfather. This is why Albert can exist in the special reality for the Hogfather and eat a few hundred thousand pork pies, and why Death's efforts channel enough belief to sustain the Hogfather while Susan sorts out Mr Teatime.

I've actually been checking back on this thread to see who would be anal enough to point this out. And oh look, its Obes!

Yeah there's significant evidence that the dude wasn't born on Xmas 25th. Plus, take into account the Georgian/Julian calendar changes, plus the fact they didn't use calendars (in our sense of the word) a whole lot back then, and you can bet your sweet arse ol' Jesus didn't pop out on the 25th. And further, if you're true orthodox you can add a whole other element of error by your unsubstantiated disregard for the Georgian calendar (because a Pope decreed it, it must be wrong - which it's not, since his astronomer told him to do it).

I'm an atheist but I still love Christmas time. For me it has nothing to do with Christianity or Christ. It is what you make of it; that's the simple reality.

And before this thread spins off into another atheist-filled QGL special, I would also be quite happy to go to church at Xmas time (any Anglican, Roman Catholic or Uniting church) - which also for me is not religious (believe it!) - I like the traditions and the singing and what not, even though I am still 100% solid atheist. Midnight mass is quite an interesting thing to attend. If you haven't been, get there. Even if it's to marvel at the sheer number of 'believers' that believe in that bulls***!

And clearly what I was implying is that you can't redefine 'christian' to mean 'good', that is not correct, and it is potentially offensive. That is something a christian would do to make their existence seem synonymous with goodness. Christians are responsible for oppression, execution, murders, wars, and just the general horrible treatment of human lives. I know this for a fact, I have been on several bible camps.

Plus the fact that there never was a Jesus Christ recorded in history anywhere ever, nor a man who do any of the miracles that jesus could do. Plus all the stories of christ were known much earlier in persian and egyptian culture and were attributed to various other well known pagan deities. Plus the fact that all the original gospels contradicted each other, read as fiction, plus the idea that jesus was a human being didn't become dominant until hundreds of years after people started writing about jesus as a god.

I'm not joking when I say that when people use the word 'Christian' to mean 'fair, just and good' I genuinely get offended because that implies as a non-Christian that I am not 'fair, just or good'.

And you need only point at all the kiddie-fiddling Christians out there to know that it's a bogus ideal anyway.

thermite, I am quite certain there is enough historical evidence that the guy referred to as 'Jesus' did actually exist and further was a significant historical figure (maybe similar level of significance as Julius Caesar or Alexander the Great, something like that). An influential person. That's as far as I'm prepared to go.

Yeah, it definitely makes me arc up, so I guess that means offended. I deal with a born-again Christian quite regularly who pulls out such s*** on the odd occasion and it definitely causes me to rant. That's about as offended as I get.

Dunno dude. I tend to think the "Christian values" thing is more a historical language construct than anything else, much like how "English" is mostly spoken by non-English. Western justice and morality is based on Judeo-Christian beliefs, like it or not.

We're still untangling it - see poofter marriage for a good example.

If you let the born again wanker get to you because he (wrongly) thinks this means he has a exclusive patent on the concept of goodness, it says more about you than him IMO.

Yes it probably is historic, and it is in dictionaries, but it's still not right. It's (something like) propaganda to get your name into people's heads as being synonymous with a concept that appeals to them. Sort of the opposite of calling someone a 'mexican' or a 'jew' - those are the real words but they carry with them connotations that people who don't like mexicans or jews have created.

Fair enough, if thats what you've been told, a lot of people think that. I don't want to do the argument now, but if you care about actual history, and truth, you should really look into this a bit more!

No probs! Damn i love starting an e-fight, and what better a way to do with religion.

Also

It doesn't f***ing matter what the exact day of Jesus's birth is. It was always an estimation, be it wrong or not. The fact is, Dec 25 is the day Jesus' birthday is celebrated.

Also also

Most christians aren't pious f***tards (believe it or not) and go to church because they know they're not good or perfect.

Yes it is, but Ghandi said, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world."

When you say 'Judeo-Christian beliefs', I don't think it's as simple to categorise it like that. If you take, for example, the Moses story as fact. Dude says, "Give me all your gold" and wanders up a hill and comes back with some basic laws for living - you would say the foundations for our Judeo-Christian justice system - don't kill, steal, blah blah.

What I think this actually represents is at that time society had a lot of problems - a basic disrespect for other people. A character like Moses might represent a political person who is out to change such a culture (whatever his methods, trickery/con even if desperate enough!).

You can see a basic disrespect for other people in many countries. You don't see it very often in my suburb though.

My annoyance stems from the fact that basic respect for people doesn't have to be religiously based. So if you associate these basic principles with 'Christianity' or 'Judaism' or 'Buddhism' or whatever you think is the 'ideal' religion, then yeah, that annoys me.

At the end of the day though, I think there are only more and more atheists because life is so good for most Westerners now that they don't really need something to believe in to make life better.

Soz for the TL;DR

Infact one who is good because they fear the wrath of an angry god or demon is probably less honourable than one who is good simply because of themselves. And trust me there are politicians and stuff who do believe morality comes right out of the bible and nowhere else, and they think that without religion humans have no sense of right and wrong.

So? Whether the above is right or wrong, religion still shaped our justice system and moral code, especially over the last millennium. It doesn't mean that God did it.

It is far more likely that Moses' people, the tribe of Levi, were waring rapists and murderers that dominated the tribes of Israel with brute force. The Levites were an aggressive waring tribe, and their battle mascot, Yahweh, was a volcano inhabiting war god. They decided he was better than any other mascot and set out to 'convince' everyone of this. I guarantee you he wasn't holding a rock and reading from it, he was holding a rock and pounding it into someone's skull telling them their god wasn't proper, and his was.

I don't think there's any independent (non-religious) evidence to suggest that Jesus even existed at all. All books about him were written something like 100 years after he died, and were all stories of stories.

This is quite long, but interesting: http://www.infidels.org/library/historical/marshall_gauvin/did_jesus_really_live.html

Oh so no one could find a scribe willing to write about Jesus at the time, but everything else that happened is extensively documented. I think a guy that walks on water and heals leopards* warrants at least the f***ing high school work experience kid to come down and make a note.

Sigh ... I think I'm being Obes'd but I'll give it one more post.

"Death" and "Hogfather" are anthropomorphic personifications, not people. Like the Gods of the Discworld, they are shaped by belief.

For example, Mort very nearly became Death just by doing Death's job for a while. Sure under the silly hat he's obviously still Death (you can tell from the bones) but he's also the Hogfather.

They are obviously not mutually exclusive personifications during the book. Its almost the entire f***ing premise of the novel.
