So I'm keen to buy this TV after seeing it in store and getting the sales pitch for it: Hisense 42" Full HD $1591
Hisense site

But the guy only offered to take like $9 off the price (wtf?). I remember someone here works there so was hoping to see how low i can go on this sucker?

dodgy brand but they have a 3 year replacement warranty from the manufacturer.

Yeah I reckon they have a better picture though + better warranty + cheaper + Hisense is partnered with Whirlpool which gives it somewhat better credibility (?)

yeah, it's definitely one of the best warranties out there for LCDs - iirc both Samsung and LG have dropped their 3 year warranties and only provide 1 year now, though they weren't explicitly replacement warranties either.

i'd have a quick browse through the t&c of Hisense's warranty before buying though ;]

edit: tomsmum - that a 1080p screen?

Taggs/tomsmum there's 3 dif sony 40" lcd's on the jb site ranging from $1394 (ask for deal) to $2096. Can only assume tomsmum got the 1394 one. I Can't tell the diff on paper, would need to look at it.

I paid 2K with 5 years extended warranty for my Sony Bravia 1080P LCD with a Free PS3 years ago.

I didn't even open the PS3 and sold it straight away for $500.

Not bad for for $1500 all up.

rocket the best way to get massive discounts is to play stores off against each other. ring up clive peters, clive anthonys, etc and get their best price. then goto the next on the list and say x store is offering whatever, can you beat it? feel free to bulls***. worst they can say is no and then you just goto a different store.

$9 off is bulls***

I paid 3K for my 40" XBR bravia with free ps3. Sold the ps3 for $590. TVs are so cheap these days.

What's the deal with LED TVs? I noticed a lot of people still buy LCD and plasma. They look good from what I've seen but haven't really done any research on pros and cons.

LED look about a million times better than lcd and plasma, but they're significantly more expensive.

Epic, I believe only the good guys and jb hi-fi stock Hisense so it makes it hard but i'll give it a go. Apparently Hisense is actually good s*** in Euroland but just isn't well known in Aus yet...so they say anyway.

Hi Rockit. I bought a Hisense for my kids room (66cm) They have the xbox360 on it and it goes great. I bought it about 5 months ago. They also have a great warranty setup.

Which JB's did you get that quote from?

Heard nothing but good things about Kogan

I got a call from a friend earlier this year asking me what TV to buy, I said the usual brands and he goes "well I've got this Kogan thing here in front of me and it's" (I cut him off there and said steer well clear)

He ended up buying it anyway, from melb
it arrived, he unpacked it, had dead pixels (5-10) and the speakers vibrated when the volume was up (ie while watching a movie etc)

he had to pay to send it back to old mate down in Melb and then wait for ages until they "fixed" it
ended up sending him a new one

cost him more by this time than it would have if he just bought the LG/Panasonic etc equiv

PM me for prices :)

Also - Hisense is good, as far as picture quality goes it isnt too shabby at all, their 3 year (in home) warranty is quite awesome.

Sharp still offers 3 years, sony has their promo on right now for 3 years, and some LG panels offer 3 years afaik?

Samsung Series 6 is possibly the best TV value for money atm, imo. Best duplication for 100hz, just go into a JB hi fi and ask to see the credits of a movie on the visual wall to see the difference in processers. Samsung or Sharp all the way as far as quality goes. I see it and deal with it every day.

Sony has had a massive price drop recently also, but i wouldn't pay for it personally. The ability of the panels to reproduce the frame is average quality. Like i said above, the 100hz Samsung owns the 200hz Sony or the 600hz LG (lol 600hz..)

pics or lying. Full HD? Meaning a minimum of Series 6, had to be a scratched screen or something at that price.

series 5(B550 and B530) are full hd aswell fyi (only they are 50hz)

600hz is a sub field driver - Samsung and Pana have it too - however they are all natively 100hz (lg included).

Samsung defs take the cake for best range atm - i dont think sharp come anywhere near them tbh... Sony are easily next best.. If going plasma Samsung and Pana are the pics..

As for hisense they are great - all the panels are current generation - the cosmetics are almost identicle to samsung so they look good - and the performance of them is well above what you would expect for the price you pay... Id rate them above LG at this point in time..

Check out HN too - im sure they can hook you up.

This. I have series 6, 50 inch Plasma (ps50a650) for $1950 year on boxing day sale and once I've tuned the picture it's so awesome I can't even watch normal DVD or Standard Def stuff any more.

Bought an Sharp LC-42D63X and a Sharp BD-HP20X from JB @ Stafford in July last year (TV with 5 year warranty). The Blu ray player failed but it was out of warranty so I contacted Sharp and they provided a new drive (parts) out of good will. They didn't have to but good will is good will. Glad to see Sharp are willing to back their products.

Ye me mum was telling me last night that her LG fridge broke 2 months out of warranty and she rang em up and they gave her a brand new fridge free which was worth almost twice as much as the first one too. Pretty epic.

Just thought I'd give an update;

coming down to either a 46" Samsung Series 6 LCD for ~$2000 then selling the free 22" LCD on ebay for ~$400, or just simply getting the Hisense 42" straight up for $1600.

So both work out around $1600 with Samsung on a 4" bigger screen but the Hisense with a 5 year replacement in-home warranty. Tough choice as I actually prefer the Hisense picture quality and the super warranty.

Given the choice, and the amount of differences, I'd get a Samsung.

Basically picture quality setting. Most (probably all) factory standard TV picture settings are terrible, until you fine tune these you don't know what you're really missing :) Sure it'll look "great" to most people out of the box, but if you've seen a TV that's been properly tuned it'll look fantastic :).

Depending on TV some will let you fiddle with lots of settings like white balance, gamma, etc. My Sammy has a lot of these settings available to users. Some TV don't give you access to many settings without having to f*** around with it.

I googled a few recommended settings from various HD sites and eventually found one that really makes everything look great (though I still kept the other setting just in case I get bored with this one :)). Now if I go back to factory standard picture settings with names like "Standard", "Sport", "Game", "Dynamic" I just can't stand it.

To each their own of course, but really if you drop a fair chunk of cash on your toy wouldn't you want it to perform to its full potential? In my case yes I do :)

ahh cool, wasn't sure you meant tuning in TV channels (lols on my behalf there I guess).

I might have to google up a storm and tune my Sammy - I rekon it looks kick ass now, this is going to be awesome once tuned :D

Thanks for the pro tip Opec - I'll look up some guides on tuning. I just played around with the settings until I got what I thought looked good, but i didnt go into detailed ones just general stuff.

The TV is superb but I only have a s***e DVD player with digital output so anything on that looks like arse. I'll sell the free 22" promo LCD and buy a blu ray with hdmi methinks.

No probs guys, I only learn this really because I wasn't really that happy with the picture quality when I bought the TV, then played Bluray on it. I thought, yeah it looked great but some scene the picture would be waaay too contrasty or too dark. So I did some googling and found lots of settings to play around with, much to my other half's dismay haha.

RockitMan yeah definitely get a Bluray with upscaling of standard DVD (most good brand would have this) and definitely use HDMI version 1.3 at least (pretty sure your TV should support it). Whatever you do don't get sucked into buying super dooper HDMI cable, cause really it won't make a difference when your cable is going to only be ~2 meters long at most :)

I got Sony BDP-S350 about a year and a bit back (was one the the cheapest one) for $450 then, you should be able to pick one up around $300 now, or get different brand if you're keen.

Have fun fiddling around with your new TV :)

Thanks mate!

Are PS3's good blu ray players? Or do they lack the features of a standalone?
Opec
Posts: 6100
Location: Brisbane, Queensland
Yeah PS3 is pretty good as bluray player, it's got a lot more features than stand alone player, and you can use it to play all sorts of other media as well i.e. mp3 etc. Plus you play games on it, if you really want ;).

Of course "audiophile" would spit in your face for even mentioning PS3 and HD setup in the same sentence but 99.999% of people, it's probably one of the most flexible one out there. See the review here

My other half won't get me buy a PS3 ........... sad panda......

PS3 + tversity = win (like xbox + tversity).

Basically it becomes your HTPC which actually plays games, which you'd think would be standard of a HTPC!
