Topic: Microsoft to form Voltron with Yahoo to battle Google?

I specifically use news dot come dot au links to piss off trog.

But more seriously, the numbers look interesting if the article is right:
Google's search engine dominates the marketplace with 65 per cent of US internet searches, according to figures provided by research firm ComScore.

Last month, Microsoft had only 8.4 per cent of the market and Yahoo 19.6 percent.

With Bing pushing Yahoo searches, the combined search entity will apparently have 28% share vs Google's 65. There hasn't been an engine even nearly half as big as Google for a long time.

How do you find Bing? I have been using it as my default provider to give it a run, but I find the results quality isn't as good - I flick over to Google and find what I'm looking for a lot. Maybe I'm just used to phrasing my searches in ways that the Googler understands?

Bing's okay. I haven't used it all that much, but it seems to have done alright the 2 or 3 times I've used it. Doesn't really seem to offer me anything I don't get from Google though.

This is really disappointing... only 65% of people are using Google. What the f*** is wrong with people? I'd like to see how this data is collected - surely that's an underestimate???

+1 for failing thread.

I came expecting to see Steve Ballmer and Carol Bartz merging into a cool sword wielding robot. Major disappointment.

i use bing on my windows7 box coz it's the standard search engine (both from the nine msn homepage & in ie8) which is gonna get them some market share from the lazy. it works usually & finds me what i want... but so does google & personally i prefer the simple google interface.

Yeh its weird I thought it would be a bigger share foor teh Googles. Looking around it looks like 60-70% really is the acccepted share of Google in NA searches..

I think I heard a while back that there's a couple of non-English speaking countries that have a whole f***ton of people living in them that don't use Google because they have native language search things that do better jobs. I want to say South Korea and China but I can't remember for sure.

I'm surprised at the 65% number as well. The verb 'Google' as in "Just Google it" is so common-place in everyday speech now you just expect everyone to be searching with Google. "Just Bing it" doesn't have the same ring.

And Infidel, I use similar except with a "-print" tacked on which I believe you missed ;-)

Honestly, I have tested Bing. Not for weeks or anything like that. I have found that Google gives better results. I can't even find my own company with Bing (which is another problem in itself). So like the Father of Hog above maybe I'm just used to phrasing in Le Google fashion. Plus I regularly use commands like "filetype:" and "inurl:" - no idea if Bing can do that, no care.

Yeh the numbers for Yahoo in Asia are supposed to be stronger for Yahoo or something.

65% is north american share of Google.. I imagine in Australia that the Googles would probably be much stronger?

65% doesn't surprise me at all tho - think of all the newbs that just click 'search' in IE with all the defaults that MS gave them

Yeh sure - effectively all of Windows Live search is surely OS-default driven. But there's also 20% or so for Yahoo in North America. They're obviously not leveraging the OS thing - I haven't used Yahoo in s***, a decade or so?

Microsoft only gets 8% share at the moment - they're not getting a heap of benefit from their 90%+ OS market share.

There's other search engines?? :P

I had a look at Bing but I trust Google search too much to bother trying to "switch".

You trust Google? How exactly?

I think its a superior index, but I don't "trust" any company.

Why change search engines when Google does everything you need?

I'll stop using Google when it stops searching. eg never.

Well I meant I trust the search to get me results.

I'll stop using Google when a competitor gives clearly better results. Bing, at best, is as good as Google so why would I start using it?

for the same reason, consumers change any kind of brand of a commoditised product - marketing, spin, image, the new new thing. All that jazz.

this, or also just quoting the text if you're being uber-minimalistic.

They didn't give a s*** about it so much before, because there wasn't that much "real" money in it. They've had a search engine for ages though.

These days search traffic is massive bucks in advertising revenue, and Microsoft really loves teh monies.

considering people don't even "search" for s*** on the internet I don't even know why they would bother. +1 with wonderfing wtf does the other 35% use, but pretty sure its called "googling for something" now.

At least 45% of the population uses the facebook search engine instead of google.

Alot of people use the default search that comes with their browser, which will be MSN search, and thats what 90% of that 8% that MS have is, people mistyping domain names etc.

Alot of people use Yahoo for their news and as a portal for their email a yahoo groups, and thats what keeps the yahoo search at around 20%. Alot of those people were using those features of Yahoo before google was even around, hence why it's managed to maintain 20% share (i think a fair chunk of that is foreign non-us people too).

I remember reading about it all when they were first talking about MS and yahoo mergers years ago, MS has tried to buy yahoo twice now i think. MS even had their cut of the search market into double figures at one point, but not for long.

65% is alot though, actually it's at monopoly status.
