Topic: Attaching USB keys to key ring

I have just bought a second USB key and they both have these tiny tiny holes on the end with no evident material (wire, mini-chain???) to attach to a key ring.

How do YOU attach your USB key drive to your key ring? I am sick of shoving them in my pocket and losing them.

most usb drives will come with those holes so you can feed the small end of a lanyard onto them. but no-one wears lanyards anyway.
try a small thin keyring onto your larger keyring.

personally i keep my usb drive in the zip up coin part of my wallet, cos i only ever carry gold coins and notes

Clearly this is a problem that plagues a lot of people, such as USB finger guy who has this solution:

I have a USB on my keyring and it's the bomb. My USB has a little keyring thingo on it so it's pretty easy to attach. Only prob is every time I need to take a piss and lock the room I need to take my USB key out of hte computer :(

You can get small detachable key rings like these at most key cutting places to stop that.
I <3 mine because I hate turning off the car engine just to activate three different underground parking gates.

Haha I'm the biggest nerd on the planet, I program all day long, and only just recently stopped playing WarCraft and even admit to it in public.

I still wouldn't put a USB stick on my key ring.

have to agree on the usb on keyring = lame, I do admit that i've gone looking for a usb key and the dude next to me had one on his keys and it was handy at the time, but still.

USB keys are kinda like guitar picks, can never find one when u need it.

one of those usb 'keys' and a planet waves pick holder/case on your keyring and your life would be revolutionised by the sounds of it.
and to think you thought this thread was lame..

I tend to carry a briefcase full of laptop and "stuff" around with me quite a bit, I work 6-7 days a week home and in office so I normally have my regular machine handy.

If I'm specifically taking data to someone and I'm not taking my lappy I put it on the key and take it with me, in a thing called a pocket. I don't need to have it hanging off my keyring to enjoy the convenience of the portable flash drive!

I bet you guys hang your keys on your belt too, don't you.

So instead of having an USB key on your key ring, you carry a briefcase of s***. What if I don't want all the "s***".

there's clearly a communication breakdown here...

we've 2 (or more!) very different breeds of user arging the same point without clearing explaining the method behind their madness.

it's not a matter of which one is better (work together and do s*** my way you f***ing dumbarses - sorry that just slipped out :P )

I'd like to know why Hoggy doesn't move all his tools onto his thumbdrive like I have.. that said - it's not as if I have the ability to deal with all levels of IT, though I feel I have to.

I wanna learn something new here

Yeh, gw infi. YOU GOT ME GOOD MAN..

Its unfortunately a necessity for now koopz. Its far easier to deal with the extra 10 minutes per day set up and break down than it is to set up the sort of systems we'd need to productively develop from more than one machine.

We're small time and uber conservative about business finance, so don't get to spend quintillions on IT infrastructure for the sake of convenience. Every expenditure has to be carefully weighed for ROI, and saving me an hour a week doesn't add up to a lot of R!

We're gradually getting there though. That and carrying the kit up and down the stairs is the closest thing I get to exercise :) I'd probably be more gimptastic than ever by now without it.

Exactly. I'm not even remotely a computer nerd and I still have a USB on my keyring. That way I always have one with me when I'm at uni.

Why the f*** would anyone be against something that makes your working life easier. Especially if you work in I.T.

Obviously it depends what I.T work you are employed in but for anyone employed to look after I.T infrastructure a USB keyring is the only way to go.

So many nerds in here too scared to carry around a USB key... IMO this is a great example of nerds' social cluelessness. Do you really think anyone cares if you happen to have a useful, practical device on your keyring?

Hermi - are those black clips detachable?

Billy, yup, whole purpose of them.
Was only last year when I was finally pulled up for having the CD ejector carried on flights.

As it happens, I don't need to wear em as of last night due to a middle manager :)
No longer at CA

The best question of the thread - why wouldn't you carry a USB key around?! Except as infi points out its like they make these things almost impossible to attach. I'm on my 2nd one; my first broke when the little metal thing attached to it snapped off.

My current one has a little metal ring attached to it that looks a little thicker than the last one so I think it'll stay attached for a bit. But it's really 'tight' so there's not a lot of flexibility.

In terms of encryption; I've tried TrueCrypt and generally I think it's overkill for me. What I do with sensitive stuff is usually just compress it with 7z and add a password on it, and I leave the 7zip binaries on the drive so I can always extract it no matter where I am.

A USB cable has several properties that make it optimal for use as a belt: 1. it is much thinner than the size of most belt loops, therefore less fidgeting 2. since both ends look essentially the same, you’ll never again have to worry about putting it on backwards 3. it has an inoffensive, yet modern, design: suitable for all

lol?

then you need the cable, or need to transfer data wirelessly (slow compared to via usb)

This from belkin would make it easier, but you still need to carry something.
