I'm after an external drive for uni, and I have no experience with these things, so what's a good brand?
Looking at 500gb or 1Tb? Price range is about $150 or so, looking to buy from Umart GC. |

I'm also looking for an external hard drive but I think a combination of that HDD dock apparently available at computer alliance and a cheap 1TB HDD for around $120 is the way to go. Does Umart sell that HDD dock thing (mentioned in an earlier thread about hard drive brands)?
If not office works has some cheap ones. 1TB from $149. Also they have a 1TB seagate one for $169 (only $155 at Umart). last edited by Alize` at 17:20:50 20/Jul/09 |

Umart has HDD docks, they're listed under Enclosure/Media Player.

I have a WD elements 1TB from CA & no complaints so far, it requires a wall socket for its power though, were you hoping for one powered by USB or it doesn't matter?

There are ones powered by USB?
Sometimes you can get a good deal on WD externals from WOW, but the enclosure is s***, so you might need to replace it - factor that in. |

There are ones powered by USB? They tend to be 2.5". Also that link you posted just goes to umarts front page. |

Get a Western Digital MyPassport 500GB, they are around $150-180 off Ebay. I got mine from there about a month ago. They don't need a power supply and are very small and compact which is great.

WD Passport Essential or Seagate FreeAgent GO sounds like the best options for what you want.

+1 for WD Passport. Powered off USB. I have to plug mine in the back of the computer, front USB plugs weren't providing enough power. Other than that, perfect. |
