Just wondering if anyone has ever crossed the bay in a boat or a jetski? I'm going up there for the next few days and taking my ski with me and was planning on riding over to fraser island. I have ridden from brisbane over to moreton island and it was a pretty easy and fun trip. But when I did that, all I had to do was stay between the markers and it's impossible to get lost.

Is there a channel from hervery bay over to fraser? or do I just follow my nose and hope for the best?

Cheers

Just promise me you'll be careful damn-it!

I don't know what I'd do if something bad happened.

do it from inskip point, then the only problem you will have is sharks.

Yeah, I have an epirb. And yes, it is a waverunner, so it's sweet with the waves. So now suggestions?

I've done it in a boat but never on a ski, its not a far trip so you might be okay, but id feel a lot safer in a boat.

P.s it is spelt Hervey Bay

Check the tide tables and plan accordingly. Let someone know what route you are planning and your ETA. EPIRB and a torch is not a bad suggestion. Make sure it's a 406 MHz because the sat network for the old ones (121.5 MHz) was shut down earlier this year.

Considering you can see Frasier Island from Inskip I don't think it's going to be a difficult crossing just follow one of the barges over?

The OP is asking if anyone has done it from Hervey Bay, not Inskip..

i grew up in hervey bay and spent quite a bit of time on Fraser and in the water etc, i dont recommend doing it.

Currents + Odd Shark (usually white pointer or tiger) = game over.

If your a thrill seeker, go crazy, hope across the woodies. Small and Big then to Fraser - that'll keep ya going

I've remember hearing about a jetski tour that does exactly what you're proposing ... can't see why not ...as long as you've got enough fuel fool.

You do know it is winter right?
The next Question is can I come 2?

I've heard of it being done ... although the risk involved is high. You should check into the tour groups and see if anyone is heading across and if you can tag along. The more people the safer it'll be.

moved from hervey bay to toowoomba. WHAT THE f***?

sure there is a good explanation.

regarding OP plenty of planning. isnt it 30'ks or so (guess).
you can smash 100k'sphour.
even at 60 average you will be there in no time. i reckon grab a blind fold just to make it more interesting.

Guess what? I made it!

The first day I put the ski in up the river from inskip point and rode up to the south point of fraser island and then further up the east coast up to dilli village. Then from there went out east a bit further to play in the waves.

The second day I took it out I rode from urangan and then headed north east, past the tip of big woody island and then to fraser. The trip took about 20 mins each way, so had pleanty of fuel left over. The route I took is the same path that the car ferry takes.

there were a few sand bars off in the distance, but I didn't hit any as I was crossing the bay.

Crossing the bay was pretty uneventful. A few waves here and there but otherwise it wasn't any worse than crossing from deep water bend over to moreton island.

I carried all the essentials with me, epirb, flash light, v sheet and water with me just in case.

Yes, It is winter, but the weather is pretty warm up there. I think the max temp was about 27 degrees, and then the ocean tempreture only varies a couple of degrees from season to season, so it was just like going out on a mild summers day. Plus I had a full body wed suit on, riding gloves and a PFD so it didn't really matter

I have a Yamaha 1200GP :D

I also premix my oil and fuel. If the oil injectors cut out in the middle of the bay the engine could cease and then I would be swimming with the sharks.

And Cheers :)

I had a yamaha 1100.
Also I used to just premix my own fuel.
Less chance of the oil pump stuffing up.
Now I have a Kawasaki 15F moded up.

Nice Upgrade! How does it go in the surf though and rougher waters? Next time I head out I will let you know. Let me know if you go on any long trips, I love riding from place to place.

I only take the boat out in the winter.
I'm not as brave as you.

The surf is heaps fun. I kind of regret not doing more sight seeing when I still had 2 ski's as it is a lot of fun just cruising around all the islands in the bay but you really need to be in a group just in case something bad happens.

So in winter do you put anti fogging? i think it's called into the cylinders to stop in from ceasing over winter? I try and avoid it by taking it up the river every two weeks or so.

And well summer is coming, and it's good to plan these sorts of trips. I unfortunetely don't know anyone else with a ski, but wouldn't mind going out with someone. It was a little scary crossing the bay by myself.

Nah I don't. I just use macs engine flush after most uses. Other than that I just go to town with either Lanogaurd or Lanotec all around the motor and anything electrical. In the month where I haven't used my boat today I managed to find all the spots I missed as a bit of rust has built up.

I did take the boat out today around coochie and peel (few fish there today) and then up to Ammenity point. It was a bit of a scouting mission as we are planning to camp at Ammenity point in about a month.

Getting back to the weather tho. Days like today you wouldn't think it was winter and I probably could have taken my ski.
