So I went out and got a cheap DD-WRT compatibile router and flashed it, now I'm attempted to set it up as a wireless bridge to my existing Router\ADSL Modem. I followed these instructions http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Bridge and while it says I have successfully connected to my wireless network I can't ping or connect to anything on the Router\Modem side of the network via wifi (It works if I connect them together via ethernet cable though)
Does anyone here have any idea of what to try to get it up and running? I'm using an ASUS WL520GC flashed with DD-WRT v24-sp1 (07/27/08) micro (SVN revision 10012) |

I think when I used dd-wrt I went into the wireless survey page, found the router & just clicked on the join network button or something.

yeah I get that working, when I click join it says it connected successfully, but then when I try and ping the main router or access the network it times out

Check to see your IP is set properly, did you set it to static like the page says or did you leave it on DHCP? open up a command prompt and type ipconfig & see what it returns |

I set it to static though DHCP is still enabled on the router\modem
router\modem 10.1.1.1 PC 1 10.1.1.4 PC 2 10.1.1.7 Bridge 10.1.1.100 all on subnet 255.0.0.0 |

make sure they haven't both got the same IP too
enable DHCP on only one network both aps need to be on the same subnet so if one is 192.168.0.1 and your subnet is 255.255.255.0, you rother one needs be somewhere in between 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.254 |

^^ haha if by router/modem you mean your dsl modem and your dd-wrt router are both on 10.1.1.1 then there's your problem. As teq said, they need to be different IP's. Set your modem to 10.1.1.1 set your WL520GC to 10.1.1.2 Set both device's subnet masks to the same value (looks like 255.0.0.0) |

the dd-wrt router I'm refering to as the "bridge" so they are different IPs, 10.1.1.1 for the router and 10.1.1.100 for the bridge

try changing wireless security setting, eg try without security, see if it works, then try other security.

yeah I set the default gateway to 10.1.1.1 (the main router) on both PCs and the bridge
I'll try disabling wireless security now |

heres how i would do it
router 10.1.1.1 bridge 10.1.1.254 leave the router on dhcp pc should get an IP from dhcp so leave it pinging the bridge (ping -t 10.1.1.254) then from pc2 you temporarily assign a static ip of 10.1.1.253 just so you can configure the bridge then just go play with the bridge settings until it works and you start seeing ping replies - try everything, it wont take long http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=68 last edited by tequila at 14:02:12 18/Jul/09 |

well that was fun, I went to disable security on router, I'd turn it off but the settings would just reset when I rebooted the router, so I figure the firmware is buggy so I'll just update it to the latest, no biggie. So I do that and brick my router :(
luckily I had an old bigpond adsl modem and a spare wireless router, combined with a friend who knows what he's doing and I'm not only back and online but he also set up the bridge for me, everything is working perfectly now. |

yup, still dunno how the f*** it happened though, I flashed it, it said it was rebooting and it never came back
everything is set up how I wanted it though now and working flawlessly, just have a modem then a seperate router instead of a single modem and router combo. The bridge is all set up in the new room and the xbox found it and connected instantly to the net without having to even open the network settings for it, same with my new samsung tv, it's streaming video through the network from my PC all through the wireless bridge |

theres a asus flash tool you can use to unbrick the asus. Provided on the cd in the box.
First you need to pull out the power, hold in the reset for 30 secs, plug in power and continue holding for another 30 secs. |

He bricked his ADSL modem/router, not the Asus router flashed with DD-WRT.

I suppose buying that D-Link router last week wasn't such a bad thing after all?
