So boys and girls After sitting here watching random s***ty Irish TV, I was thinking what was the first IM client you used Obviously IRC was the first, however I was too newb for that, so I used ICQ before IRC, then moved on to MSN Messenger and have pretty much stuck with that ever since and used the gmail notifying and gtalk as well. Just downloaded an older version of ICQ to login, but alas my ID is no longer there :/ So what was your first IM client? |

I think ICQ was at least nearly my first, if not the. Was there a yahoo messenger? I think I used that too. And something else. I was a little messenger whore. Then I switched to msn, and then irc wasn't until college like 5 years ago. Currently use msn and gtalk. |

ICQ then a bunch of protocols through Trillian. And yeah, I spent ages trying to figure out what ICQ stood for :)

What aboult talk? Or whatever it was that let you message to other unix users even across hosts.
Otherwise it was icq. I didn't see the point at the time. Everyone I needed to talk to was on irc. I couldn't believe how s*** MSN was or understand why people were flocking to it. Not being able to send a message because the person you were talking to had dropped off was infuriating. |

yeah same as everyone else, there was a while where I was whoring y!, aim, msn, icq, gadu gadu (for family in europe) - plus I had that Internet Phone thing which gave me hours of amusement becuase you could call actual phone numbers in america for free - oh that was awesome. And I was a mirc scripter.

mIRC, then ICQ, then Miranda (with ICQ/MSN Messenger) at uni because it could run off a floppy disk (*cough*), then Trillian (with MSN and ICQ). Now: MSN Messenger, Steam, Skype and Google Chat in GMail occasionally. And my ICQ # is pretty low compared to some of you above: 1211****. I didn't post the rest because I just searched for it on ICQ and it has my real name, age and street address. FFS. Was I so stupid? |

irc is our primary company communication medium :)
we have a main work channel and then some other area-specific channels. it's a pretty handy tool we find, although it does have it's drawbacks I found my icq account http://people.icq.com/people/full_details_show.php?uin=1100023 |

I first used ICQ and I can still remember my number: 44910246 but I'm never on it anymore. After that I went over to MSN because that seemed to be where everyone else went so no one on my ICQ list came online anymore. These days I still use MSN but I also have xfire for those in-game chats & telling team mates where enemies are & stuff.
edit: Holy s***, I just installed icq2003a I found on a CD and it still works perfectly and logs in. Why can't MSN keep the same protocol through all their versions so we can use whatever the hell version we like best? One person is online :( last edited by whoop at 18:21:53 16/Jul/09 |

IRC then ICQ#18030775. I too remember thinking who the hell would use MSN where you had to wait until someone was online to talk to them, tisk tisk.
The interesting thing is that AIM never took off in Australia, but was/is huge in the US, same with Yahoo. Not sure what MSN did right in this country. |

MSN did well I think because they tied it all in with Channel Nine's website, and because it came with windows and you could use your hotmail address to login. AIM was only really pushed on people who signed up for Australia's AOL and they kinda missed the boat here I think.

I used to BBS for a while, man that was fun, way cooler than any internet! Then ICQ, can still recite my number just like everyone else... ;P After ICQ it was MSN and IRC, though IRC only for really nerdy gaming stuff. Nowadays MSN hardly ever at all and mainly Skype. |

I don't want to get into semantics here ... but IRC is the protocol right? not the client...
Mine would have been IRCDough ( IRC client on VAX/VMS ), then IRCII, then Mirc, then ICQ then trillian for ICQ+MSN support. Jim, have you looked into the Jabber protocol for work? We've recently run up an OpenFire server, the protocol supports both IM and chatroom ( irc channel ), can also hook into a SIP server for voice and has full LDAP auth support and all sorts of goodies. |

Same with me the first time I used irc was over telnet. I couldn't DCC receive so had to get help to compile some irc client on sunOS 5
it wasn't hard to do, unless you knew as little about unix as I did. then renamed the binary to "vi testprg1.c" so that irc wasn't so blatant in the processes list |
