It just started shining a couple of huge searchlight looking things around the sky and flashing all sorts of coloured lights on the top of it, then after about a minute it turned off.

I remember seeing this article about the upgrades http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,20797,25190532-3102,00.html but didn't realise it would be ready this soon.

Maybe tonight was just a test.

The coloured rings and the whole dome is a RGB LED array by the looks of it, I just saw a rainbow of colours rotating around the lower ring, with a glow from the top.

Yeah, the LED lights are from Germany Italy. Have a look at cerb's link.

There will be a LED strip light from Italy, able to produce 16 colours in endless combinations, and a new sky needle ball with its own lights. Completing the effect will be a powerful set of German-made spotlights.

So I was, spotlights are from Germany, the LED strip is from Italy.

Thanks for correcting me thermite, not just pointing out that I was wrong. Good job!

I got a couple of blurry pics and videos, but from our distance away the camera's zoom does nothing :/

haha.

Stefan rocks. He does a lot of charity work, and I don't really see much reason for him to have the skyneedle anyway - I doubt he makes any money from it.

Obviously people know who owns it though.

Years ago some of my mates lived one house down from the sky needle. There were heaps of hobos living under it.

or there's the other myth that stefan turns it on when the coastguard is asleep so his drug ships can dock.

Sweet thing about LED arrays is when 1 or 2 diods fail it looks like s***, and then eventually when enough fail for it to be noticeable it will cost him a f***ing mint to change the entire array. Poor choice of lamp source imo.

I thought that was the advantage of an LED array is that they're interchangeable?

Depends on how big the array is.

Eg to replace an array in one of the big screens at suncorp stadium, only requires you to replace 3 actual diods, which is cheap as. It is actually more expensive to replace an array in a traffic light because theres approx 30 of them in there. And we've all seen how many traffic lights have failing diods in them (s*** loads).

still better than having 1 bulb, which had just as bad if not worse failure rate. I've seen intersections where like 4 out of 5 green lights were out. At least with the led variety there should be at least a few leds still working in each light.

Also with the "green" LED traffic lights there is a nice mix of blue hues so that colour blind people can register them more clearly...

I would have no problems with it if it didn't literally shine right into our apartment. Could you aim a little higher Stefan? Sorry to be a killjoy but how would you like it if I shined a super bright light right into your house?

I'm hoping they are just calibrating. Just a degree or two higher and it would be fine.

Depends on how big the array is.

I thought that was what made LEDs so awesome is that you can replace each light one-by-one without interrupting the entire screen/array/whatever.

So basically what used to be an incandescent lightbulb is now 5x5 LED which can only be replaced in a 5x5 array?

That's f***ing stupid!
