Congrats to Casa who has finally decided to settle down and is now engaged! He popped the question at his girlfriend's 21st party last night during the speeches in front of all their family and friends (I missed it though because I was running late :( ) She stupidly said yes because obviously she doesn't know that he's really a huge queer.

Congrats dude, all the best :)

On a slightly related note, how does everyone here feel about marriage? Is it necessary any longer? What are the benefits?

Marriage is awesome. But I wouldn't have said yes to marriage at 21.

As for the benefits? No benefits at all really. Marriage doesn't 'change' anything and those who think it will aren't ready to get married.

Have been with my husband since I was 19 - didn't get proposed to until I was 24 and even then if he had asked before I doubt I would have said yes.

Not being ready for marriage doesn't mean you don't love the person or want to be with them

I disagree, marriage does change the dynamics of the relationship.. It doesn't change how you feel about the person if that's what you're referring to..

It's about committing your love to that person and wanting to spend rest of your life with them..

You can't really ask whether it's relevant or necessary or whatever. Some people believe in marriage, some people don't. Each to their own. (If I was single) and I met a guy who said straight up front that he didn't like the idea of marriage, I would no longer be interested. There's no right or wrong answer. If you want to get married, do. If you don't want to get married, don't.

props casagrande - dont listen to them, 21 is fine, every generation before ours was pretty much married by 18

as for doing it infront of the family etc, pfft
im sure hes got enough brains to know whether or not she was going to say yes/no - you drop a few hints in the months leading up to it and you get the general idea
most chicks are gagging for it anyway

also, keeping dates close together is a mans way of remembering.
If I could get married on my girlfriends birthday I would ;)

Sorry if it came across the wrong way - I was merely asking for people's opinions. I understand that marriage is right for some and not for others, and I am curious as to why (if people know themselves). It recently was brought to my attention that there is another option to marriage (i.e. commitment and marriage aren't the same thing), and I was curious to hear other people's opinions on it.

I offered my personal opinion nothing more.

I dunno I just dont see the point myself. It's rather ironic that most of the unmarried couples that I know that have been together for the longest.

All good. No one needs to get married. No one married has a better or more committed relationship than someone unmarried. elvis and I were together for 6 years before we got married. I think less people should get married. It is obvious a lot of people have no respect for it, or idea what it is about

I met her when she was 19 and I was 24. Now I'm 26 and gotta remember, we aren't getting any younger! Though that's not the only reason. The other reason of course is for a bucks party. I went to 4 last year and can't wait to have one of my own yyyyyeeeeeeeeoooooooowwwww!!

Ps to prove further how not dumb I am, we have decided to have the wedding on 5th Feb 10 which is my birthday.

Kat it's just a joke you tard. We haven't even been together for 2 years!

If you put a time on how long you've been together with someone before you marry them, then you may as well put a time on how long your going to be married for. When you know, you know.

Also greazy knows the score. I've already got Valentines day sorted, being my dads birthday, his dads birthday, and my grandparents wedding anniversaries, I haven't done anything for valentines day ever, and fortunately the girl knows that and has to deal with it, I'm just covering all bases.

Just sounds far too young for her.

Met at 19, less then 2 years. Sounds like her first long term relationship and you guys are still in the honeymoon period.

It REALLY sucks when you get 2 - 3 years into a relationship then the shine comes off and the s*** really hits the fan. I'm assuming you 2 are already living together?

all you clowns who are slagging getting married 'early' are ignoring the fact that teq pointed out - every single generation in history has gotten married around the 20 mark except for this current generation.
Getting engaged at 21 is perfectly normal.

Is not a justification for anything.

Prior to there being sewers every generation of people threw s*** out the window and lots of people died of annoying things like cholera...

lol, nice analogy ... not much.

Getting married is a tradition, so it is entirely relevant to compare the history of the tradition when making observations about what is 'normal'.

Throwing s*** out the window isn't very traditional from where I'm sitting.

casa start a sex jar. For the first year every time you get it on you put a dollar in the jar. After the first year, everytime you have sex you take a coin out. See how long it takes you to empty the jar.

I'm speaking in general here, but I'd be more worried with marrying/committing myself to a young chick cause after a while they'll start wanting to go out and get more cock cause they didn't experience enough before.. all depends, sounds like she's a winner anyway simon, so wouldn't worry about it.

It's funny how sex goes up and down in a long term relationship for no real reason. Just go with the flow.
