Topic: QGL How To #431: How do I remove a screw...

Hi all

I've got an old rusty downpipe that needs to be removed.

I've drilled out the pop rivets and that went smoothly. However I'm having a great deal of trouble removing the screws that screw the pipe clip into the brick.

The screws are small flat heads surrounded by a ring of tough plastic. I've tried unscrewing the screws with a normal screwdriver and the drill, no go.

Is there some sort of trick that needs to be done?

I may have to saw off the ends of the screw, but that will leave the ends of the screw still in the brick, I was kind of hoping to use them again.

Cheers.

Usually when screws are too hard to remove I use an impact screwdriver.

If they don't unscrew then it's likely they are nails not screws.

drill small hole into the screw, smash an alley key into the bastard then unscrew

Success!

Turns out the plastic stuff was actually silicon and I hacked at it with a screwdriver and got rid of it. The silicon was used to hold the pipe clip in place on the screws, it works so I might do the same.

Hooray! Bunningstime!

If it's into brick they probably are plugged into the wall. It'd just be a soft plastic plug so if you can't unscrew it you could probably lever it out.

nvm.
