EA has a store you can buy and download games from using their "manager" aka "s***piece".
Theres also stardock which has some good titles on it, especially sins of a solar empire. |

Sicne this thread is lame, can we turn it into a "How awesome is the steam concept" thread?
I love being able to say to myself - hey, I want that game... and it can be 11pm, and I just go on steam, and bam, it starts downloading to my pc. Shame it takes ages to download, but hey... ONCE WE GET OUR FAST INTERTUBES, it will all be better. |

Steam still is s***, it's just that the s***ness has been now approximately equaled by the convenience. Anyway he said the Steam concept, not Steam itself. :P |

Because when steam first came out it didn't even work. I remember you didn't need to use steam unless you played a valve game, so if you just played a 3rd party mod like NS it was SWEEEEET. After a while they forced you to upgrade from WON but it worked pretty good by then.
And when they released that half-life 2 silver pack it was an awesome deal. Every valve game for like 50-70 bucks I cant remember. |

Didn't pirates get this idea way before steam? Actually, in a keynote speech Gabe Newell gave at that DICE conference thingy recently, he said Valve aren't trying to combat piracy with Steam, they're just trying to catch up to what the software pirates have been able to offer people for years, the conviniency of grabbing the game you want anywhere, anytime. And its working imo, if I want a game, and its on Steam, I'll happily buy it off Steam because its easy and convinient, no f***ing around with cracks, no f***ing around when patches come out and I can grab the content straight from the internode content server which means s*** comes down at almost 2mb/s, which is more than I'd get anywhere I tried to download a pirate game from (and I believe it doesn't count towards my quota if I use the internode server? don't know though) |

They did however pioneer it. |

All Aussie servers are free. It's been that way for ages, so no real need to mess with SteamWatch or any other kind of firewall crap. Plus internode's servers are fairly high quality - in performance as well as the players that are on them. You don't often see much text and microphone spamming and annoying crap as in other servers - such as the GA 24/7 2Fort TF2 server (hands-down the most annoying game server I have ever come across - half the team is playing music most times I join). |

Demigod is going to be coming out on Impulse too I think, they'll help it. Not sure if its coming out on Steam as well, but when I watched the developer walkthrough of it, the producer was a Stardock guy and only said about it being available on Impulse.

I remember once when zest was selling those Orange Box sets from Russia for like $20AUD and steam wouldn't let me register it because I wasn't in the correct zone and I eventually got around it by login in and finding the host server and blocking all the IP's in my host file in windows until it connected me to a Russian server which then let me register my game.
Took me about an hour but I got there in the end :) |
