After reading QGL casually for about 5 years and seeing (some) intelligent posts i thought i'd ask the question that has been on many of the QGLers minds for a while now? Where do people work? I'm sure everyone isn't just an IT guy / web designer. I myself am an On-Site Construction supervisor / Junior foreman. I work for a big Shopfitting / Joinery company based Australia and NewZealand wide. So essentially in a days work I will do anything ranging from sitting in my office and doing site inductions, to supervising a specific job that requires precision, to organizing the daily deliveries and lasing with the crazy truckies that carry a few tonnes of timber ac across the country.
What does everyone else do? Anything super-crazy? |

I work working for a joinery company called Woodworkers Company. I've been there since 1992 when I started my apprenticeship. I work with a lot of crazy f***ing people and not a day goes by that something stupid happens to someone. Its probably the most entertaining place I have ever heard of... Never a dull moment.

Game programmer, nothing really big to my name yet, I'm working for a small-ish company in Melbourne and mostly we've just made licensed shovelware to date (gotta pay the bills), but we're now working on an original IP for the Wii that is pretty exciting (as in, its a REAL game for the Wii that isn't a collection of Wii remote waggling mini games).

Ha, I'm a manager for a secure messaging company in the Health sector.
Started out in I.T years ago and worked sales/account management, field technician and various other roles. Started my own IT business about 5 years ago which was successful but have put that on the back burner to pursue better income. Words of advise to anyone; take every opportunity that presents itself to build a network of associates for which will open new avenues of employment for the rest of your life! |

I'm in IT and work for a digital media company .. however what I do is not what I was employed to do, moved down to Melbourne to do or want to do. So now I'm faced with re-evaluating my situation and striking out to see what's in the market place which at the moment, isn't a very enjoyable task.
I'd probably put myself in the Infrastructure/Team Leader/Management space as it's what I've been focusing on in the past few years. |

I'd probably put myself in the Infrastructure/Team Leader/Management space im finding myself doing more and more of this, but im pretty sure its not what i want to do: i much prefer doing things, rather than telling others (or being repsonsible for others) to do things |

well since I left the Army 16 years ago I have been a machinery operator. Ranging from places smelters, foundries and die casting to the Wharf (yes I was a wharfie for near 10 yrs). I also worked for a time in manufacturing with places such as Tyco water and One Steel Reinforcing.
Bridge and gantry cranes (open class) Forklift (open) HR Truck Skid Steer loader Evelated work platform (11m) Straddle carriers Unfortunately I am for the first time in my life genuinly out of work and I am hating it. I have to say for the first time in my working life I am actually scared at the prospect of not being able to find work given the current state of things. So if anyone knows of anything in heavy industry give me a yell I am up for just about anything. |

I'm a programmer/analyst. I'm involved in everything from requirements through to design and implementation for internal (business systems) and external systems (betting interfaces) at the TAB. Mixture of new school C# .net (ASP.NET, winforms, WPF) and old school C++ (linux),visual basic 6, classic ASP.
I hate the vb6 development, second comes the linux development. Not because its linux but because of the f***ing crazy convoluted in house build and deployment system that we have, and that as a programmer im also expected to be a linux admin (without any admin experience). At least my linux skills are getting honed. But soon enough these legacy systems will be nothing but dust :) |

make yourself cool. anyone can write on the qgl wiki. Except me. Because admins who, well, evidently don't know how to admin stuff properly or talk to users, don't believe in 24 hour bans, or anything shorter than 2753 years ;) software hack for a bug tracker It pains me the way JIRA gets used here. Despite having it, the 'this is agile!' nooblets here insist on also replicating everything on a physical white board with cards (and having the white board take precedence over whatever's in JIRA). And... oh f*** it. I'm in hell here, and I should have followed dRanged when I had the chance :( ;) |

I'm a Certified Ethical Hacker. I'm currently a Security Operations Analyst for IBM Internet Security Systems in Spring Hill. I basically manage firewalls and IDS/IPS devices for companies. I mostly interpret network based traffic and assess security events in realtime but we also do mundane stuff like adding rules into firewalls and creating VPN's between networks. I'm working on my SANS GCIA (intrusion analyst) cert.

alcoholic but in my spare time i fondle your luggage at virgin blue. yes i am that guy who breaks your handles on your bags etc etc. good fun, only work ~24 hours a week. hahaha
thats right fondle 1. To handle, stroke, or caress lovingly. 2. Obsolete To treat with indulgence and solicitude; pamper. To show fondness or affection by caressing. and thats exactly what i do with your luggage. |

demon: The revenue from the carbon certificate auctions will be legislated to be returned to consumers in ways that offset the increased cost. Of course it will be disproportionate, low income earners will get near 100% assistance while Teq will get no help. The money saved by not helping high income earners will go into funding energy efficiency measures, renewables/CCS/nuclear research grants and so on.

heheh :) it will be pretty interesting to see how ets(cprs) pans out... i was pessimistic when i first read the draft because it seemed a little short-sighted to believe that any sort of penalty system would reduce overall power consumption, especially considering that there will probably be some industrial growth (maybe not so much now coz of the latest economic wobble). if they continue to reduce the overall cap... surely that's going to put a severe limit on industrial growth?

not necessarily demon, we can do things so much better than we do right now. I mean even just planning buildings properly with high quality insulation, minimising heating, cooling and lighting needs makes a HUGE difference. Another simply massive area is retro-fitting or even just repairing refridgeration units around the country. Ridiculous quantities of power is wasted there.
Not to mention shutting down some of our old old coal plants which are some of the most polluting in the world and replacing them with something clean. There's no doubt it's expensive, but you can clearly decrease australia's carbon output while increasing overall energy consumption. And this is just using tech available right now - anything fancy and new on the horizon can only help. last edited by orbitor at 15:18:02 11/Feb/09 |

Aside from molesting plants, I'm a character animator at Krome.you should be molesting leah. she's hawt. tell her zor says hi. edit: fail @ topic. after being a bartender for nigh on six years, i got sick of getting paid and treated like s***, so now i'm a rigger. i build big things out of steel. if any of you go over the gateway regularly, that big white tent-looking thing at the cement factories near the refinery, i built that. good fun, keep fit, play with cranes and get 130ft in the air in a boom lift :D last edited by z0r at 15:53:10 11/Feb/09 |

many staff working on those type of things ssm? Around 20 crew on this ship, plus the odd cadet or shore contractor. Average for an Australian ship is about 18. So not many. Except passenger ships and stuff which have hundreds or even thousands of crew. |

Programmer in a Direct Sales & Marketing company but also just recently moved into a part time technical marketing role in the same company, hoping to make the full switch after a few months of my masters study in Marketing.
I'm going to make my employer rely on me so much so that i'll demand top dollar otherwise i'll leave consquently driving them to the ground (which i'll prolly end up doing either way). |

Started off by myself as a .net/WPF/Web 2.0 programmer for a real-estate tycoon (the one that's ripped allot of ppl off, not going to mention his name however lol).
Slowly worked way up to senior programmer and now project managing for educational\training based products, where some nutter (literally he is f***ing insane) has spent 25 years of his life making the English language 100% phonetic, none of this international phonetical alphabet s*** which the Chinese and many ESL people use, and we've purchased the rights to develop\deploy\market it; so we've developed allot of web plugin tools and an online English course. Soon we're launching in Hong Kong!!. Very lucky I was, right place @ right time with little experience fresh out of Uni. last edited by Twinsen at 16:49:27 11/Feb/09 |

Work on just about every major festival that comes thru Brisbane in one way or another and do alot of other band work. Have my own company as well which is based more in corperate events, recording and event production.

My title is pretty wanky at the moment:
Operations Manager - Special Proects But basically I just work for a very large property developer, my day to day role generally would involve finding suitable sites, doing a feaso on what we can build there, if it stacks up then take to to a development manager who then takes the next steps. If it gets beyond that, I work with the development manager on the operation of the development and generally oversee the marketing aspect as that is my core skill. However, given the economy has gone to s*** and no developer is buying anything. I pretty much ust run the operations of our 3 biggest projects that are all joint ventures (which make them much more complicated operations wise) and in my spare time, I am out there trying to get a joint venture partner in our biggest project so we can go ahead with it, as we can't afford to fund it ourselves. This involves making submissions to large fund managers and asking them for bucketloads of captial, which isn't easy at the moment! |

What sort of shifts do you guys do ? and what the ehck do you do when your not on shift ?? Mates work two four hour watches every day. I am usually on the 8-12 watch, so I do 0800-1200 then 2000-2400. There are two other mates, they do the other watches (12-4 and 4-8). Between watches, there's always at least some deck work to do, watch a movie, read, s*** up forums if within mobile internet range of the coast. It can get dull, but I get one day of paid leave for every day on the ship, so after my usual six week swing on board I get six weeks leave. |

SSM,
I don't know anything about maritime law personally but I understand it to be a small, but lucrative market. Law doesn't have a major like other degrees, but you shape your practice area by your choice of electives. I'm heading down the commercial litigation path. |

At the same time I was working as a casual on the CityCats (Brisbane ferrys), some of the guys there used to go to sea, I got ideas, saved up and put myself through the required course at Australian Maritime College in Tassie. That was 2004, now I am back at college for more study (so I can be First Mate). On the bright side this time around the company pays me full seagoing wages plus rent allowance to be here, so no more poor student living conditions. fade, thanks for that. I am sort of lining up what I would like to do ashore when the sea life no longer suits me. Was thinking about doing distance ed law at Macquarie Uni for a few years then going full time at UQ or something, if they will give me credit for previous subjects. Will have to more research, ta again. last edited by StopShootingMe at 06:33:43 12/Feb/09 |

No worries, SSM. UQ Law are notorious for not recognising other university's subjects. You might like to try QUT if that's your plan. QUT will even let you credit up to 4 non-law subjects at QUT or other universitys as electives. Maritime law is an elective offered every second year at QUT, but as you can probably understand when it's competing with common practice area subjects like Family, Tax and Intellectual Property it isn't the most popular.
On the upside, I have read somewhere that Maritime/Admiralty barristers are among the top earners. |

demolitions :) Nice sc00bs. My office window looks out over a demolition site for the last 6 months. It's amazing to watch, I just sit there and watch for sometimes an hour. They just pulled down a six storey office complex with basically one big CAT bulldozer type thing with a couple of different attachments - I had no idea how it was done before but now I feel like I could go and demolish a building myself! I have an unobstructed view, front-row seats. The recycling also amazed me. The effort they go to crush all the concrete to get the reo out of it, I had no idea they did that. Anything that is remotely metal they recycle (presumably goes to the scrappers). I was talking to a business manager from OneSteel at a recent conference who was explaining shredding and steel recycling to me, it's all very interesting. Australia has a long way to go with recycling compared to Europe for example (it is more difficult for us because of the lower volume) - particularly with automotive vehicles and so on. |

Emdaddy nice going.
SSM and Scoobs jobs seem to of drawn a fair bit of interest and not suprisingly. Just a question for you both how did you get into what you do now and how long have you been at it. side note: SSM given how things have been for aussie shiping over the past 10-15 years I am almost suprised we have any aussie doing the job anymore. Whats your take on that. |

SSM and Scoobs jobs seem to of drawn a fair bit of interest and not suprisingly. Just a question for you both how did you get into what you do now and how long have you been at it. There's a post back on page seven on how I got into the industry, but basically it was a bit of a random thing, even more peculiar was the fact that I picked the first year they started picking up cadets for the Australian maritime industry in ages. That was 2004, away on my first ship September of 2004. Being a cadet is pretty average, as the title suggests, only got 4 weeks paid leave a year, paid around $27000, needing to complete 18 months time at sea. Back to college in Tasmania after accruing my 18 months of seatime for about six months study and an oral exam, after which I had my Second Mate's ticket (correctly it is now Diploma in Applied Science (Deck Watchkeeper)). That ticket saw my pay go straight to $103000 (as juniormost officer on a tanker) with six months of the year paid leave. Have moved up a little in pay since then because there's a phenomenal shortage of deck officers in the global industry leading to very favorable EBAs here in Australia. As for your questions on the future of the industry, Taipan, we don't know. I seem to recall you worked for Patricks in the nineties, and it's still all doom and gloom according to some (MUA and otherwise), but a lot of the older hands reckon it's actually looking better now that it was then (not because of Labor's election, just because of demand, especially for crew for offshore ships in WA and Bass Straight). last edited by StopShootingMe at 16:49:00 12/Feb/09 |

Until some lifestyle change makes me not want to spend half the year (in six week or so blocks) at sea. Like kids, or a wife or something. For a single young guy it's hilarious. While you don't really see the exotic ports of the world on the ship these days (most ships spend maybe a day or two in port, commercial demands, blah blah...) you can throw all your money earned on board in the bank and then travel or whatever and be paid to do so the rest of the year.
I was asking fade for advice because I have to assume I'll want to stop the job somewhere down the line and would like to have the next career lined up. I think Maritime Law might be more my thing than say, being a harbour pilot (pilots are also on good to excellent money mostly, but it's basically valet parking for ships). |

Have considered both :) The negotiators apparently tend to be ex special forces types (not me), while pirates are underpaid and have poor life expectancies. Did you know that after the guys who seized the Sirius Star got their USD $3M, a bunch of them drowned just after getting off the ship? Being a pirate is crap.
The lawyers behind the scenes, however, get good money and not shot at... |

Nice response SSM thanks. Yeah I was a wharfie for almost 10 years starting right after the Patricks lock out in 98. I have spent so much time working on container ships, bulkies and Ro ro's I have often wondered if it would be something I could do for a living. I honestly would at some point in time love to give it a go, however at my age I am guessing I have little chance of heading down the road you took.
Coastly runs would be pretty nice not so sure about being way the hell out in the middle of f*** f*** I can't see land though lol. Of course with any major job change there is an adjustment period thats to be expected. But as it stands right now I have nothing tieing me to the land or to any given town anyway. As a matter of fact with the leave you get it'd be damn near perfect given I would want to be visting my missus in the US as much as I possibly could until such time as I can live there permanently. |

Taipan, have you considered being an I.R.? (Not sure if they were still being called A.Bs when you worked as a wharfy). You'd probably know most of the tasks, the training is faster than the cadet route, being an Australian ship the leave and on board conditions are the same as the officers or engineers get and the pay is good (70-80K or so, ranging up to ~100K if you land a good job in the offshore sector, depending on the nature of the ship etc). Just a thought.
The future may not be as rosy for the boyos as it may be for the mates and engineers (the temptation for the shipowner to try replacing them with underpaid Filipino dudes is ever present) but, like I said earlier, people have been saying the end is nigh for a couple of decades now, but so far the work is ongoing. |

I work as a sys admin for a media shop in Milton. Have been working with a large British media house recently on the technical backend for a web project consisting of a bunch of www servers and a couple db (mysql) servers.
This job was supposed to make me rich so I could buy some large and in charge hardware to install opennebula on and build out a cloud host, but so far I have no time to work on my own projects unfortch. I also work around the barista at getting devs motivated and generally being the brunt of a fair share of jokes so that things get settled down and back on focus quicker than if I were to give it back. It could be said that it's the enviable position of not having to use your brain too much while also having the luxury of being able to spy on peoples home directorys when they least expect their huge files to be pwnt. I actually move them to another storage chassis because I'm not some BOFH, it's a thankless job. When I'm not doing either of those things I'm on the train commuting or sleeping. |

I am the bat man.
I work at QT during the day doing IT and a bit of GIS (Geographical Information Systems - basically mapping). I work in the bit where they design busways, roadways and cycleways. I want to ditch the IT part and do GIS though. Mapping is way interesting and pays better. By night I'm an indie game designer/code monkey. I did the story for this game while I was at uni. Now I'm working with the guy who made it on a pretty big 3D project. Edit: Hi Mantra! I'm the guy who gets told to read those big documents by people who paid to get them made but haven't read them. last edited by Crizane Tribal at 21:26:58 12/Feb/09 |

Squarky, sounds very interesting! Met a lot of famous bands/people I could imagine? Yeah its an interesting job, sometimes a complete reaming but everyday is different, which i like. As for famous people yes and no, alot of the really famous people have their own crews and security etc so they arent bothered. I have worked with alot of aussie acts when they are on the way up, The Presets & Sneaky Sound System for example. Also a few internationals like mixing Tom Morello from RATM's side project 'the nightwatchman' at bigdayout, and tech'd for My Chemical Romance back in 06. |
