Topic: Tech help :( wuauclt.exe using 99% cpu...

Hey guys for the past 24 hours my wuauclt.exe has been taking up 99% of my cpu resources.

I cant get the bloody thing to die. I delete it from my c:\windows\system32 folder and it just keeps coming back. I end process in task manager, and also end process tree. I have tried setting the priority level and it wont allow me to change it. I have tried just leaving it on to connect and update (wuauclt.exe is windows updater) but no luck at all, it just sits there and chews up all my system resources, including my internet bandwidth, or maybe i just cant open webapages cause of my cpu getting raped.

I have virus scanned, downloaded and tried all the fixes google can provide me. It wont fkn die. Insert rage here.

So if anyone has any experience with this or knows how to fix it, please let me know. I'm about a couple of hours away from the dreaded format.

Thanks in advance !

Yeah i've tried that from cmd, it doesnt stop it, well it does, but then it just starts up again.

Will try the other options and if it works i'll check back to see what beer you like :)

I have in the past had to delete the update folder. It is located in c:\windows\softwaredistribution. I have had machines do this in the past and this seemed to solve it, but try it at your own peril. Basically it meant that the machine thought it had no updates whatsoever and I had to go and do them again but it did solve it. You will need to stop your automatic update and BITS services first.

Had this happen a few times when the windows update catalog gets corrupted. To stop it while we fixed it up we disabled the Automatic Update service in your services and rebooted.

^^ Same as clubcat - this happened to my work pc.
to fix it i stopped the service of automatic update as well as renaming the folder from \windows\SoftwareDistubition

Then restart the update process and try and restart the computer.

Every time you go start -> shutdown does it also prompt you to shutdown and install updates?

That is the issue I had.

Do this:

net stop winmgmt
net stop wuauserv

del c:\windows\SoftwareDistubition

Then either disable WU or re-run from Windows Update site. See how you go..
