Ok, before any of you say "My GOD!! Didn't you know that already!?" - please, just don't bother, save yourself the time. There is a handy trick in GMail for when you want to access a new site that requires your email address, add a + sign along with some extra text. E.g., your email is andysmith@gmail.com This address will also arrive successfully in your inbox: andysmith+soccer@gmail.com So then when you want to stop receiving rubbish you can just filter it easily based on "To:" address and send straight to recycling. **EDIT** Ok, not so useful. I just tried with one account I had and they had a JS check on the email box that didn't accept plus symbols - only alpha-numeric were allowed, so I imagine that would be quite common. Also, I continue to use http://www.guerrillamail.com/ a lot. |

I think it also works with full stops. At least, I keep getting emails from other people with name name with a full stop between first and last name because they think that's their email address (mine is the same but minus the full stop). It's f***ing annoying. |

Yeah, I was just reading another good idea: as you know email addresses aren't case sensitive so you can do andySMITH for some dodgy sites and then setup a filter on that. Although, not sure if the filter allows for case sensitivity either. Also just read that the plus thingy is a Posix/Sendmail thing, not only a GMail thing, so should work on most email hosts. |

I don't mind the occasional random email from someone, especially cuz its almost certainly not their fault - I'm getting way too many for it to be a mistake. These other people that share my name apparently really don't know their email address at all.As discussed in another thread....gmail ignores all fullstops in email addresses!man did i eat a lot of 7-11 sandwiches The thing that annoys me is when these guys create accounts at websites with my email address and I get signed up for all these services and emails and stuff. The latest thing was some guys netflix subscription - I get emails whenever their new DVDs go out. Now I can reset these guys passwords, f*** with their addresses, cause all sorts of chaos. What I /can't/ do is reply to the email or easily send them a customer service request saying "you have the wrong guy, please stop mailing me this stuff" because they don't have a mechanism set up to do it. |

Ok, before any of you say "My GOD!! Didn't you know that already!?" - please, just don't bother, save yourself the time. You're right, cut and paste is so much quicker. But yeah. Addresses are also case-insensitive, so JoeBlow is the same as joeblow. Spambots sometimes won't be smart enough to figure out that difference though. last edited by Raven at 10:22:23 21/Jan/09 |

how many emails do you get?depends - quiet at the moment but sometimes 3-5 a week depending on how many f***ING NETFLIX MOVIES this guy wants. surely the original party is noticing they arent getting emails?that's what you'd think - I try to email them all back as time permits saying "please let the guy you were TRYING To reach let him know he keeps giving you people his wrong address" It has really highlighted to me the need for simple methods of communication for users to report things like this and hopefully we can make AusGamers not suck anywhere near as much for things like this. |

ive got 4 or 5 gmail accounts that i use for various things, all forwarding to my name account;
i like having my name as my email account, i forsee me keeping it forever, unless google do something wacky like make me start paying for it or something; also, if you use your email for anything official, it looks lame as if you have an email address like "terminator_99@gmail.com" or even "myname_75@gmail.com" nothing wrong with using your name if you were quick enough to get it; |

nothing wrong with using your name if you were quick enough to get it;Yep, that was my logic. ravn0s' solution would defo work but its not a lot to ask that a) people know their f***ing email address and send it to their friends correctly and b) companies reply to emails about sending s*** to my account I bet most people don't go to the lengths I do to let companies know the email is coming to the wrong spot - I bet they just hit 'spam' which probably f***s that company up even more. If you make it hard to unsubscribe from emails, you just run the risk of all your s*** getting tagged as spam, which will cause you big problems eventually. |

These other people that share my name apparently really don't know their email address at all. Therein lies the rub. If I lived on a street full of blahnana's, and I gave out the wrong mailing address all the time, I should expect not to recieve my mail. Hell if I live on a street full of people who don't know my name, and I give out the wrong mailing address all the time then I'd expect not to recieve my mail. Anyone who lives in a short term rental property receives far more than 1-3 pieces of mail a week addressed to someone else. The internet increases the type of collision for you: trogs using gmail... but it's just one of those things. If people can't use their address correctly, it's not a fault of the system. If I give someone the wrong bank details, I can hardly blame them for sending money to the wrong place, can I? There are systems that could be set up to uniquely identify David Harrelson's... but they have the potential to cause as many privacy issues as they solve. It's a minor inconvenience to you. Do what you feel you need to as far as trying to get the mail directed to the right place, but at the end of the day the fault lies with the person who is incapable of understanding the unique nature of an address. |

Or does the fault lie with Gmail for not recognising unique email addresses? Every other MTA I've used knows the difference between ticman@ or tic.man@ and I can redirect to different mailboxes so why does (presumably) Google's own version behave differently. |

also, if you use your email for anything official, it looks lame as if you have an email address like I use a dodgy GMail account for business which is 'sgtpinky', but I spoof the reply-to address. Problem is that on same email clients when the user clicks 'Reply' it still shows 'sgtpinky' which I'm sure has made more than a few business colleagues say WTF. However, it's modern times, people understand so it's never been a priority for me to fix it. |

They let their users have any combination of fullstops in the username they choose. It doesn't change the fact that the other trogs are getting their email addresses wrong. Once you've got ticman@, google doesn't give away tic.man@ or ti.c.man@ to anyone else. They choose to let you have fullstops in your email address whereever you like. I don't see that as a problem. It's not what's causing the issue here. last edited by blahnana at 10:54:46 21/Jan/09 |

I like the fact that you can have extra fullstops where you like, or not if you want. It makes it harder to give the wrong address. Which is why I get confused as to how you can f*** up giving your address to someone when it is supposedly your own name?! Honestly, what does 'David Harrison of uk' think his address is? Because clearly he wouldn't have been able to sign up with the fullstopped or non-fullstopped alternate version of which you have trog. how many emails do you get? You'd be surprised how easy it is to not notice you're not getting emails... I used to get my work account forwarded to my gmail, and then they changed servers and sent out an email pointing out that all forwarded accounts would no longer forward (which of course I ignored as with typical IT emails that I usually didn't have to pay attention to), and as such missed out on 6 months of work emails :| Yes, I should have realised this much earlier than I did, and looking back there were LOTS of signs, but honestly, it's hard to miss something that isn't there. Also, it's at times like this I love having a weird name. |

i had a guy from the UK add me with my email address with "hey" on the end of it (and .co.uk instead of .com). I have been getting added by all the 13-14 yo f***wit friends who can't type properly, all messaging me on msn - AND THEN NOT BELIEVE ME WHEN I SAY IM NOT HIM! Sometimes I have a bit of fun and play a long..."what you wearing" "f*** you should have seen X person today, they totally looked like s***" (and then watch them blow up, and then go oh yeah...believe me now?).
Thankfully i got my full name matty***** at both hotmail and gmail, and i'll be damned if any other matty***** is getting it! and yeah, forwarded my fireblood address to my gmail account. |

I always get emails about art festivals in townsville. Old ladies emailing asking me when the craft show is on etc.... WTF!! Once I even got an email regarding the arts festivals, with additional complaints that the emails haven't been getting responded to. So I responded with a wise answer, I wish I could remember what I said but I was proud.

Depends on what you're doing. If you work in IT lose the hotmail one for sure. The 85 isn't too bad, but it is slightly tacky. If you work in any other industry you are pretty much expected to have a non-memorable hotmail address.
From what I can tell. |
