Has anyone done the army recruitment session? Just looking for a personal recount of what you went through while you were there.

involves getting naked infront of a dirty old nurse, telling you to bend over spread your arse cheeks, then she grabs your balls and tells you to cough

oh, and drinking a s***load of water so you can piss into a cup for them

great day out if you got nothin better to do

I did several back in 1992...

First few were chats. After I signed up to join there was a testing session and psych session. And another one when they did a medical including look that way and cough, piss test and a lets stick a gloved finger up there. Eye site tests, hearing testings, dental checks.

But I'd ask someone who has done it more recently. They probably will take anyone that breathes now.

I did the pre enlistment medical (right before they send you down) and didn't get hte finger up your ass? They only played with my balls a little.

but you apart from that what ever else has been mentioned.. Piss test, cough, bp, hearing test, psychiatric , 1 on 1 interview.

Also not sure but it may be different for your job you want. But i think you do those extra tests on JOES.

yeah I did it in 1996.

I was going for a MTU in the Navy (Marine Technician), but they bundled the airforce/army/navy applicants (including existing reserve personal going for full time) all into the same room in the recruitment centre here in Brisbane city.

I spent 8 1/2 hours waiting, and 30 minutes total talking to people all day.

in the end I was denied entry because of health reasons (cleft pallet peeps can't go into ships due to the air conditions or some such bulls***). I was pretty low for a couple of months about that (looking back), but what do you do? It's not exactly fresh air down there. I would've loved free dentistry work for life though.. my needs are a little more than some peoples.

the psych test was a sinch.. there was a bunch of tech specs (weaponry load-outs, engine stats, crew detail, operational capacity and history or various vessel classes, ship rego numbers of the fleet, etc) I was given, and when asked the answers they'd say I was wrong and then judge me on my answer to see if I'd argue the case with the officer. I didn't.

I was dissapointed, but hey - s*** happens. maybe I was never meant to spend my life on a boat :/

you're more at risk in the merchant Navy, working for an international airline on the plane, or driving in LAX traffic imo

both my sons have done it in the past 12 months, and it was what obes said except all of the testing (psych, physical fitness) was prior to actually joining - they had to pass it all before they could join

Yeah it was all done pre joining for me too. Once I joined I was loaded on to a bus 3 days after finishing grade 12. Straight to kapooka head shaved in wonderful army green trackies and a pair of KT26s. Where most of the physical tests were repeated and I got jabbed with every needle imaginable.

Speaking to old friends that are still in there it's easier now than it's ever been before to get in. Bottom line from them is that standards have never been lower.

I joined in 88 did a few straight forward tests on Math and english plus some mechanical ap tests if I remember correctly. The medical was fairly run of the mill and nothing to get worried about. Ther ewas no rubber glove funny business though when I did my medical although I am sure they used an elbow length glove on the guys going to the navy.

Sad thing is, it's going to get worse when all the current people who don't qualify for the 20/25 year pension thingy leave since they're getting rid off it.

So stupid that they are getting rid of the long service pension. My mates old man was in for 20+ and still works for the council raking it in. Crappy that I or anyone else for that matter wont be able to do that. :(

Spidz you don't get paid to go to the gym mate only PTI's get paid for that s***. You'll get paid to run miles and miles through the bush and dig holes in the ground. You'll also get paid to miss weekends off so you can have room inspections and work as a steward in the officers mess. Still sound like something you'd like to do?

Step ... s*** man I hadn't heard that s*** ... jesus f***ing christ what total f***ing ass came up with that idea. How the crap could I of not heard about something that huge. All my old mates are just now hitting the 20 year mark so seen as they didn't mention it I guess they must be safe. Talk about a monumental kick in the balls.

ahh...why can't they save their pay like the rest of us? They get good medical, cheaper loans, good pay - why should they get a pension when they are getting their 9% super their whole career?
(Note: Totally for the pension for people who have not been getting the 9% etc throughout the 20 years. But for people starting now or recently, Pensions are a thing of the past!)

I dunno in artillery sure there was a lot of bush. But when I wasn't out bush we played a lot of sport did a lot of PT.

Including trips rugby training camps to the gold coast ...

We used to get out of the odd exercise to play football. I saw the inside of a weight room probably 3-4 times in 4 years so thats why I said what I did before. The vast majority of our training was foot work which I have never been a fan of ever.

I hated BET's and PTT's with a passion and I would of given my left arm to be able to front up to the gym every morning instead of beating the s*** out of my feet and legs on the roads around Holsworthy.

Oddly enough when I was 17 I was actually very very fast over a short distance ie sprints 100 - 200 meters. But after 4 years in teh army I had slowed down dramaticaly.... sure I could run for miles and miles but I was really pissed off that I seemed to of lost my speed.

I guess in artillery as a gun bunny so strength was a job requirement. But yeah PTIs love the body weight and endurance work.

But honestly I played Rugby and cricket. So training for those sports usually happened at the same time PT did so we were usually in the gym for rugby or tacklebags/scrum machines/pool sessions. It helped that the RSM was into rugby, but the AFL guys were looked after to. And because we were out bush for 2 weeks out of every 3 or 4, we usually had to play 3 games in 1 week to catch up. Minor premiers in the rugby then all the infantry units brought in ring ins for the finals! I knew a few guys in 8/9 and 6 RAR teams, and latter after we had all left they admitted there was atleast half a dozen people in their teams for the finals they didn't even know!

But I actually sped up sort, I did a 54 or 58 (something under a minute) for the 400m was in the regimental 400m relay team. And I was never a sprinter at school.

Yeah I was in 8/12 mdm regt aussie rules team. Seen as we were constantly out on Holsworthys range doing support shoots for the school of arty we would get brought back in to play football. Once the games were over we'd have a shower and head straight back out bush.

I always liked the fact that the guys that played football got looked after a little better than everyone else :). My BC was a crazy AFL fan plus he was the manager of our team so come finals time I got looked after pretty well. I actually knocked out one of my own officers during one game with a pretty savage head clash. Mind you I didn't get out of it free, I shattered my nose and got a fractured skull.

They were pretty good at sorting me out though. I spent a night in hospital went and saw a specialist the next day and was put in for surgery about 2 days later. They actually did a pretty nice job of fixing my nose up considering it was pretty much flatend.

I had heard that these days regimental sport wasn't such a big deal. If thats true it'd be a big shame.

I guess it helped that bush for us was usually Widebay, Shoalwater bay, occasionally Cunungra, Tully or High range. The only time we went to Greenbank was for small arms and charlie G's.
