I got 2 maxtor external drives a 160gb mini and a 320gb. I was recently dual booting vista/xp and got rid of vista today and now when i try to delete files off the externals the file disappears but when i refresh or close and come back the file is back!?

wtf is going on.

Running windows xp sp2.

When i try to run checkdisk it get's to "phase 4" and then stops and does nothing.

I just then tried to put a file onto the 160gb and it instantly rebooted the pc.

i had lots of issues. reseting permissions, taking ownership, enabeling propergation etc all failed. had to format in the end.

on a similar issues, i have a maxtor 320gb external and everytime i plug it in it clones another set of shared documents directors onto my explorer tree. i now have about 10 sets. is it ok to delete these clone directories?

exteranl. i bought another 500g exteranl, copied what i needed off the first external, then formated it. long way round, but i get a new toy :D

Solved, plugged into the laptop and still gave errors but was able to run checkdisk which seemed to fix them. Thank f*** for that because i didn't really want to transfer 600gb of data!
