Hey anyone here have any of the old school style 750 ml beer bottles with "crown seals" i.e. not twist top but the ones that require a bottle opener?
I need approx 30 to get my home brew started up. Perhaps someone here has or knows someone with a crate or two of home brew bottles that they no longer use. They aren't particularly expensive just have to be lucky to get em. There are a few lots on ebay but all the ones I want are pick sydney or melb. I am willing to pay for them (as long as it's reasonable). Or you could donate them to a good cause i.e. me getting drunker and fatter! |

Is there anywhere you can go to get bottles made?!
I want clear, 300-400ml~, twist top, glass bottles - probably a fair few, wouldn't mind to be able to take a 6-12pack and just throw the bottles out. Probably get expensive though.... Actually....yes, there is: http://www.westbrew.com.au/ but not 300-400ml....might have to buy corona bottles or something and get a capper Ermm actually, 350~ ml bottles here: http://www.sks-bottle.com/340c/fin18.html - glass and look ok, with a cap etc. maybe a bit small for home brew, but good for what I want! last edited by Fireblood at 18:29:39 15/Jan/09 |

I had some, I'll check if I still have them when I get home and get back to you
Also the grolsch bottles with the hinged caps are awesome for homebrew, if you can find them anymore. |

i have a heap at my oldies. some have 1982 commonwealth games ltd edition labels on them.
however i am of no assistance because i will be using them when i pull my finger out and start brewing again. they sell them at gaythorne home brew shop when i was in there a year or so ago. think about $15 a dozen |

check out champagne bottles. You need different lids and stamper bit but they work perfectly. |

Found this forum which looks like a good spot for advice and what not on home brewing.
I never realised there was so many variations and different combos of yeast, finings and other assorted additives to make the beer "work" better. I got this pamphlet in the kit I bought yesterday that is advertising "stills". It explicitly says you need a license in Australia to distill alcohol and then goes on to take up the rest of the pamphlet with tips etc. Then in a small paragraph near the bottom of the back page it says "oh and you can use this legally for distilling water and making essential oils". I reckon a still would be old timey and kinda cool like the Dukes of Hazzard running moonshine. Not that I would do anything illegal... |

Save yourself the hassle and keg! It saves sooooo much effort, totally worth the money.

i used to have about 10 cartons of carlto cold stubbeis. They had chiseled glass and were clear so you could see the colour of the home brew. i wish i still had them i wish to start up again.

isn't the purpose of having green/brown glass to stop light getting in that somehow ruins the home brew? |

I guess you could negate that by doing something crazy like, I dunno, keeping the bottles in the dark?

"Lightstruck, or skunked, beer has been exposed to ultraviolet and visible light. The light causes riboflavin to react with and breakdown isohumulones, a molecule that contributes to the bitterness of the beer and is derived from the hops. The resulting molecule, 3-methylbut-2-ene-1-thiol, is very similar to a skunk's natural defenses.[3]

A few years back Coopers went back to crown seal tallies - dunno if that's still the case as I haven't had one in a while. Go get yourself a tallie of sparkling and if it has a pop-top, go back and get yourself a carton or two.

Go get yourself a tallie of sparkling and if it has a pop-top, go back and get yourself a carton or two. Yeah this is certainly an option. Was hoping to get some bottles a bit cheaper but if I have to drink 30 longnecks of Coopers to get those bottles then dammit I will! |

Nice find there Le Cock. However I think those places will have minimum orders of a cuppla hundred.
Might give em a call though, maybe they could sell me a few dozen. |

I've dealt with them before for other products, you don't usually need to buy a heap of anything so should be sweet for beer bottles too.
