So my Xbox pulled one of these ones

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x56/maxe1/IMG_8244_1024.jpg

I called support up and they're like yeah yeah yeah mail it to us

I've taken the HDD and faceplate off as instructed and jammed the whole lot in a cardboard box, but Im not sure if

a) I can send it to them in a cardboard box that says "20 Piece Porcelain Dinner Set" on it
b) Do i need to throw my receipt in there too

I suppose I could call Support back and ask, but anyone whos called Xbox support knows that not a fun option

im also interested in what happens with this.

mine got the rrod on xmas eve.

I also have organised to send it in but I am unsure whether they will send out a box or not.

And Also unsure if I have to throw in my receipt.

but then i thought teh rrod warranty is 3 years from when it was purchased and the 360 isnt even 3 years old yet so I dont think they will mind without the receipt.

at least i hope :P

No receipt required man. I had a box lying around of good size and glued a A4 page to it with the mailing instructions on it, bubble-wrapped her and off she went.

I sent mine out the first time (happened twice now) in some random box, I think I just wrapped it all in brown paper and stuck the address on a big A4 piece of paper.

After that they send your xbox back in a little white box, which I then gave to a friend who later RRODed and then he in turn got one back and gave it to someone else who then gave their box back to me when mine RRODed again.

If you're desperate you're welcome to my latest box if you're in the springwood area and willing to come get it.

and yeah, you shouldn't need the receipt, the serial number on the back of your xbox actually has the manufactured date on it, as long as that's with the 3 years warranty you should be fine.

the most important thing is to ensure that you label the xbox 360 with "FAIL" so they know whats up.

photocopy your receipt and do up a doc with what happened and all your details for contact.
or go to hardly normals where they have the 360 (no HDD) for $275 with 2 games....un f***in believable!!!

wow, I'm tempted to buy another one & mod the one I already have. I assume you can get mod chips for 360's now? The DVD drive on my modded original xbox died the other night but I had a spare so threw that in, not sure how long that one will last though either :(

im getting one purely as a media extender. apparently comes with 256mb memory so will also be good for lounge room family games while i use the real one for my FPS and on line play....unsure about mod chips but i would guess so

When I mailed our Wii to Nintendo, I ended up just putting in:

* the unit by itself (no accessories, controllers, etc or anything)
* little note with my name, contact details and current date
* full description of the problem on the same note
* photocopy of receipt (damned if I'd give them the original to keep)

Then I sent it with registered post.

I imagine sending stuff to other companies' support centres would be similar.

Can't wait for xbmc360 :)

The only reason I'd mod my xbox is for xbmc, as I understand the only advantage to mod at this point is playing burn't games?

I'm told a good trick for ensuring people handle your stuff carefully is to label it with "Caution: Firearm". Apparently this works really well with baggage handlers, and you just pack a flare gun in it :)

looks like your question had been answered but just chipping in to say when i had to do it for mine the service was awsome the turn around was under 5 days and really quite painless. Might be a bit longer for you with the pubhols an stuff but yea

It depends on what the problem is, as a RRoD can have several different causes. Usually it'll just be repaired.

mine's been sent back twice and it came back repaired rather than replaced

mine has done the same, do they accept them if I tried taking it apart and it doesn't have all of the grey grills and white panels when I go to send it in?

It's a long way off, apparently very little of the code can be ported straight across.

Not with 7 numbers after the 1800-bit.

They don't repair it, they send you a reconditioned unit. I've had 2 go RRoD 1st one went back to shop (was 7days old), second one went to microsoft, they sent reconditioned unit as soon as mine arrived. Different serial number etc. I think it renews the 3yr warranty when they RRoD, but I don't think microsoft are really counting dates for RRoD either, I think its prolly easier for them to just fix em.

The recon units are supposed to free of RRoD hardware issue, mines been going strong for 9 months now.

Do you get the same hardware if it RRoD's? As in, i'm pretty sure my xbox is a falcon (60gb holiday edition) so if it rrod and i send it in does it come back with falcon hardware?

You don't send your HDD. Does the falcon have different software? I think not.
