Just watching a bit of the cricket today and noticed on 90 in fast moving scenes (e.g. fielder chasing ball) some pixelation. I've not noticed this before on my TV (Sony kv-hx32m31 hd rptv) with my previous set top box (thompson HD something). In fact, the reason I bought the Tv at the time was precisely because it didn't show the sort of pixelation that the plasmas and LCD's of the time were showing in fast moving scenes. In my opinion, the quality of the picture is pretty damn good.
So, is the pixelation I've noticed because of channel 9's new HD setup or more likely my new $100 HD STB or, less likely, my tv? |

I supposed if it's a "one off" thing then it might be bad transmission. If you've watched fast moving sports before and hadn't noticed it I'd say it's pretty safe.

Just watching a bit of the cricket today and noticed on 90 in fast moving scenes (e.g. fielder chasing ball) some pixelation I'm quite sure what you're referring to as "pixelation" is just a side-effect of receiving MPEG streams. I think the compression scheme involves dividing the video into 8x8 pixel blocks and reducing and quantising the detail, as well as sending frame differences (as opposed to a complete frame) every frame. So you just end up with blockiness in fast scenes from channels that have a low bitrate. Big TVs with bad scalers can also bring out the artefacts more. I just did a search and people are saying similar things: http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=25035 |

Basically the steam isn't high definition, its just high resolution, something the majority of "HD Broadcasters" don't understand. |

Hmm thanks Parabol. pretty well describes what I'm seeing - 'blockiness' around the edges of the objects.

9's picture has always been pretty average on fast-moving things like football etc.

Late at night the ellen degeneres show and even the ch9 hd logo in the bottom of the screen lead me to believe ch9 broadcast in 320x240 resolution, the picture looks like absolute DOGs***. Mind you it is just the ellen degeneres show and I don't watch it but when I first saw the picture while I was looking for something to watch I thought my TV was broken.
