Topic: New Intel i7 Build up - Boot Issues

Hey guys, Just got a new i7 920 CPU, the board is a Gigabyte GA-EX58-DS4. Vid Card is a Quadro FX570 and memory is Team DDR3 4BG kit and 2BG Kit 1333Mhz - Case and Power Supply is the Antec Titan with Neo 650Watt.

Issue I am having is that not a damn thing is happening when it powers up. All motherboard LED signal lights are active and stay on. Tried single memory sticks in differnet slots, and also tried a different Vid Card. Tried a CMOS reset. All front panel plugs are unplugged, its powering on with only a vid card and a mem stick. I dont even get a memory error beep sequence when theres no memory installed.

The only beeps i had was after it being powered and left for 60 seconds then i got a rapid non beep alarm. Apparently this is a power failure alarm. Tried another PSU, same. Ive basically tried eveything i can without changing CPU. Any other Ideas? Or board FUBAR?

Did u connect the power molex for the video card. Because it is sounds like it is booting up but no display leads me to think the issue is ether a matter of the mobo not detecting the card or the card not getting enough power.

Wish it was, The Quadro Card doesnt have power addition, Nor did the other vid card i was testing.

Sounds like a problem with the Quadro. You need to send it to me for diagnostics. Expect 6-12 years for it to be returned.

Anyway, this might sound like a dumb question, but does it work when you remove it (the motherboard) from the case?

I've once accidentally somehow grounded an I`Will BS100 to the case and had exactly what you're describing happen ("Holy s***, $500 board grounded, s*** s*** s***"). Did nothing but remove it from the case and then put it back in properly the next time, and it worked just fine.

did you try it without the vid card in and using the onboard? there is a option on gigabyte BIOS that lets you select boot up from either the onboard or PCIe

Tested the Quadro in another system, works fine. No onboard unfortuately. The replacement board is ready to collect. I'll go get that and hopefully i'll be in the clear.

Have you attempted startup with the CPU and RAM removed? Should beep angrily at you, just a thought.

I dont have any advice, but some of the comments above are why when building a new PC i've taken to just sticking the CPU into the motherboard - no RAM, no video - and booting it up without putting the motherboard into the case.

Saves a lot of f***ing around, and you know whether your new PC should work with less than 5mins of work. You should get the repeating beep indicating memory not installed, and then can proceed with the install.

New board, Same s***. Tested it at the suppliers workshop. Turns out Its an issue with new i7 X58 Bios in some brands. Will need to update the bios to "Rev3" or something before it even thinks about booting. Dont know how i'm going to do this though. May take it to a friend who can throw in a higher end i7 Chip, and see if that works (apparently it does).

It is very disappointing that this kind of s*** makes it to the market as often as it does.
Some manufactures are more concerned with beating the competition to the market then building a board that works.
An i7 mobo not working with an i7 -_-

Sorry for the bump but I'm having the exact same issue with the same board and processor. Apparently the board works (it was tested by the people I bought it off) and I told them to update the BIOS for me. I know the graphics card works, because it's the same one as from my old computer (yes it's PCI-E I'm not an idiot, at least I don't think so). Both the 8 pin and the 24 pin power connectors are plugged in, and I've tested the board out of the case to see if it was a short. I know no conclusion could be reached for Bohemion but maybe you guys have something new. Thanks in advance.

I know this is a long time past now, but when I set up my i7 board the first time the other day, I forgot to connect the ATX12 connector, and all it did was power up the fans. Was this the same thing you had happen?
Great to know Gigabyte are pumping out boards that don't boot though, clearly they've taken a page from the book of ASUS. I almost bought the board you did.

So btw, has anyone else joined the i7 club yet?

If you mean either the 8 pin power connector up near the CPU or the great fat one with 24 pins on the side of the board (being deliberately untechnical here), then no, I didn't forget to connect them. Also, the graphics card fan, the cd drive and the HDD all power up. If you mean some other very important thing that it is somehow possible to miss, then I am a fool and will humbly thank you for the rest of my life.

Well it wasnt the Bios or Power supply or Vid card or anything. It was the type of DDR3 that was being used. I was using TEAM brand memory - Then tested it with a few other brands all of the same FSB. If ended up booting when I useda very standard cheapy memory called Adata. Booted 1st go i put it in. There is a list of memory on the Gigabyte site that tells you what is compatible. The i7 is picky on every detail of memory, down to Latency and Voltage reg of that memory.

The 8pin connector you refer to is actually two 4 pin ATX12 connectors side-by-side. It's done so you provide multiple phases of power.

One of the things about my P6T was that it will apparently only boot with not only a DIMM in each of the first two banks, but they also have to be in the orange banks (okay, that bit's fair enough). But yeah, the manual says you can have one DIMM - you can't - you need at least two.

But it should still beep/scream at you.

What motherboard do you have Cicada? Any chance it's a P6T like mine? (if so, see my other thread where I received a dead board - common problem with that board it seems, works for a few hours then dies).

No, it's a DS4 like BOMHEMION's. I've tried booting with my ram in triple channel (every 2nd bank), then just each individual stick (although I'd think if it was a memory error it would at least POST), but I'll try now with each of the first two banks filled.

Why the hell did you go for 2 kits of different size? Then bother putting them on an X58?

You do realise BOHEMION made that post several months ago right? I bumbep the thread but have a single 6gb kit.

Nope it wont post - it will show signs of being DOA. As i said the i7 is PICKY on memory.

Well, after hours of frigging around, rebuilding, RMAing and generally being frustrated, I have this to say about joining the i7 club...

BOY IS IT QUICK! FASTEST OS INSTALL EVER! I AM HAPPY!

Turns out by installing RAM in the first two slots I could get it to POST, and after that I simply put the RAM back into its usual three channel configuration (the 2nd, 4th and 6th slots) and it worked! Which makes absolutely no sense to me, but there you go. Thanks to all (esp. Raven) for the help. Now for the tedious Steam install...

Oh I'll try. But being on dialup means the first time I connect = no Steam games for 6 months. God I hate Telstra. God I hate this country's lack of long distance FTTN.
