On XBLA there's r-type (not sure if it's out yet, don't follow xbla that closely)

http://www.ausgamers.com/videos/view.php/39374

Galaga Legions (again not sure if it's out yet)

http://www.ausgamers.com/videos/view.php/37525

There's also Shred Nebula which is more roaming than scrolling and has complete multiplayer

http://www.ausgamers.com/videos/view.php/38404

and Schizoid which has full co-op

http://www.ausgamers.com/videos/view.php/37062

And of course Geometry Wars 2

http://www.ausgamers.com/videos/view.php/37780

On PSN there's Super Stardust HD, which is a little more basic and not side scrolling; more like geometry wars.

There's another really good looking one that I've seen trailers for, name is completely escaping me though :/

On PC theres TWTPB

http://www.ausgamers.com/videos/view.php/38758

Coming soon to wiiware is Evasive Space

http://www.ausgamers.com/videos/view.php/40767

I can't really recommend any of these games because I haven't played them. They're just one's I've noticed while uploading trailers during the year.

The handhelds have a few of these types of games as well.

If you can only get one shooter game on xbla get geometry wars 2. It is most excellent. It's not really a shmup like r-type, but it's a ton of fun.

1942 is short but sweet, the only annoyance is that you continually have to mash the button to fire. It's still pretty fun if you played the old arcade game.

Ikaruga is an insanely hard shmup, nice if you like games that really test your skills. It's also fairly short, but its so hard don't expect to finish it any time soon.

PSN also has everyday shooter. tis a static screen shooter, not scrolling, and more noted for its dynamic soundtrack, but its meant to be good.

SSHD is fun :) but the addon multiplayer pack is a bit meh.

I wish there was more of these type of games on PSN, 1942 is good but haven't managed to finish it yet. Everyday Shooter didn't really do much for me. Access to these types of games would probably be my main decision for getting a 360, I just don't really want another console taking up more space.

i just finished braid (in TIME magazine top 10 goty), picked up penny-arcade ep 2, haven't played much of that yet though.

i want to play Banjo Kazooie, the original n64 game, but that would take SOOOO long. it will be a good one for post christmas game slump.

i have heard age of booty is good.

you can also get portal if you haven't played it yet. its totally worth checking out.
