does steam really care what version of the game you install? Because you buy in USD and download from their servers.
I really don't think they care. |

be careful though, people who bought the orange box off of playasia found out that the Thailand keys used for it, only worked in Thailand, so there was a lot of stink when valve deactivated these purchases, if they can do that play asia, it is technically possible for them to do it for cd wow.

I don't get it. It's 49.99 AUD on Steam and 55.95 AUD on cdwow. Why would you buy from cdwow? |

I thought Steam was in local currency, my bad. Oh well, still yet to buy anything on Steam although I have had it installed for ages. Anyway, I checked with my mate who bought L4D from cdwow, he has no probs. |

I haven't been able to successfully buy from Steam using my new credit card, it always rejects my address details (they have to be string exact) despite copy and pasting exactly from my netbanking account.
So I went the JB-Hifi approach. Roughly same price ($80) but less hassle to install, being a quick DVD install rather than a lengthy 4.8GB download (where you may also have to monitor the connection to make sure it's free traffic, etc). If I had known I could get it for under $60, I may have done that. $80 is quite a lot for a multiplayer game, especially with so few campaigns. |

I always look at how many hours I've played a game for. I have knocked up probably 45-55hours on left 4 dead and payed 68 bucks for it on steam. Good value.
Then on the other hand I played deadspace for about 1-2 hours before getting bored and payed 80-90 bucks for it. fail. |

Im all for boxed copy's these days. easier installation, etc.
I just wait a couple of months for the price to drop, or wait for EB to have a sale. |

How is a boxed copy easier installation?
step 1: buy on steam step 2: preload on 3fl/node/ga content servers (no quota charge) step 3: have a wank step 4: play game as soon as it is released If you can't get the correct steam server you must be doing it wrong, hell I even downloaded peggle and some other random game and got the 3FL server. Also you don't have annoying empty boxes laying around everywhere like a console noob. |

steam is actually pretty handy - log in and all my games are there ready for download.. i would imagine it would be sucky if you had a really s***ty net connection

How is a boxed copy easier installation? What's with all the retarded comments from you lately? Boxed copy in my situation: 1. 10 mins to walk to shops, buy game and return. 2. Put DVD in, installed in under 15 mins. = Total of 25 mins. Steam purchase in my situation: 0. Firstly I can't even buy it on Steam due to the CC issue mentioned (all other online stores are fine), but assuming I could: 1. Browse online store, enter CC/address details: 3 mins. 2. Download 4GB+ of content on 1.5Mbps connection: ~8 hours = Total of ~8 hours. Like I said, quicker. If you can't get the correct steam server you must be doing it wrong 90% of the time I get Aussie content servers which 'Node doesn't count towards quota. For some f***ed up reason sometimes it picks overseas servers too (keep in mind Steam now grabs content from multiple servers simultaneously). Not a big issue either way for small updates, but for a ~5GB download it can be important to monitor and make sure you get local content. Also you don't have annoying empty boxes laying around Having a DVD means I don't have to make my own game backup when I format or want to install the game on another PC/laptop (which I do with my laptop). And so what if you have a box lying around? You really like making a big fuss out of nothing. last edited by parabol at 17:09:54 16/Dec/08 |

Ok so you have normal adsl and a diners club card for a credit card. No worries, retail is probably better for you.

Ok so you have normal adsl and a diners club card for a credit card Behind a minimux in an estate = only reasonable choices are either: 1. high-quota 1.5Mbps or 2. much more expensive lower-quota 8Mbps. Higher speeds not possible, thank Telstra or more justifiably the bastards who built this estate :( Luckily I'm moving out to a better house soon, with a proper copper path. Also CC is Visa with $5K+ limit, never had any online store dramas prior to this. Steam support are useless: "we don't have a record of your purchase attempt". |
