I was just wondering how many people in the AusGamers community have modded or mapped for any particular game and wanted to have a centralized discussion about it and a place to post links for your work if you want (my site(s) are in my sig), whether it will be small like a map/ weapon to a full blown mod which re-codes the game.
My mapping experience: I have done maps for F.E.A.R. and just recently Counter-Strike Source. I have also done maps for the original doom series using the ZDoom port but haven't worked on it for years. Next game I'm to map for would be CoD4, still have to learn how to use Radiant though, had a few difficulties when trying to map for Doom 3 but I will learn it some time around. My modding experience: None. Haven't really gotten that far into coding for any particular game to do that. So what are your experiences with game mapping and modding? |

Started mapping with stunts and wolf3d. Then Doom with WADED and DCK32. Moved onto the build engine games: duke3d, shadow warrior, blood. Ended up coding and mapping in Quake1&2 (moving from 2/2.5D to light-mapped 3D was a fkn awesome experience).
Ran a Q3 mapping site on Planetquake for a couple years, mapped and worked on the particle physics system for a Q3 mod based on the Syndicate series, until I realised the main coder had no coding experience (didn't know the difference between logical && and bitwise &) .. oh and the legal threat from Bullfrog didn't help. Then I realised .. hey if I put the same amount of hours into studying at uni, the pay off will be better in the long-term, so my modding hobby came to an end and now I'm a research engineer - wtf. last edited by parabol at 18:28:36 25/Sep/08 |

Yeh I've been wanting to make a game for, umm, ever. Played around with various map editors and mod tools over the years.
The return on investment for indie development of games is just really, really low and I don't have the time to do it for the love :( |

"Started mapping with stunts" - parabol
I remember that game, would've been the first editor I used as well. With Doom, I started that late, like in 2001 I think I started. Had a companion CD(that had tools & resources to make WADs) which I knew nothing of back in the day (I was only 5) when my uncle got it and it wasn't compatible with the shareware version. The First Doom Editor I used was DEU then I went on to doom builder for the zdoom port (still work on my WAD every now & then). Never mapped for Quake, its a lol and ashame about your modding project. "return on investment for indie development of games is just really, really low" - Hogfather That is true, I always wanted to make games but to get income you'd have to be really lucky to have your game stand out. |

i remixed Q2, made a thing called 'death ctf' with all the existing models.
grenade launchers spat out corpse heads, rockets were gibs, flags were corpses, swapped a bunch of the sounds around etc, etc. I've been meaning to do something like that for Tf2. Call it TfZ (team fortress zombie). It would be awesome to set up a server were everyone on one team had to defend and were engies and all the zombies were on the other team as heavies or something. (you'd probably need to mess with a few things like hp and damage to get the balance right though). I also think the zombie thing would fit into the universe pretty nicely. But i dont have the time for it anymore. |

I made custom maps for CS, and later DOD. I got pretty good by the end, but in the end I got annoyed because everytime I'd release a map they'd change how DOD worked and the map didn't work anymore. And then I never moved onto mapping for source or anything else.
I'd like to make a game but more like a java/flash game than anything downloadable. |

i made 3 quake maps & every now & then from a sort of obstinate cad obsessiveness i work on the 4th ;p i made all of 'em way too late for anyone other than a few mates at lans to play on. i made a skin for qw & quake2 but they were pretty crap.

I did a bunch of UT2004 mapping and a team I was in created several successful mods while at Uni (QUT B. IT/Comm Design). We won some awards and were featured in PCPowerPlay last July and a couple of design shows in Beijing and Tokyo. Most my mates now work at Krome/Pandemic/Halfbrick but I'm working in IT at the moment.

I've been half life mapping on and off since around 2000. I've made a number of cs maps etc. I worked on the HL Rally Mod, mapping and testing etc till it kind of went quiet. These days I just map when i'm bored.. I still find it a great way to pass the time ^^.

I used to love making maps for games. Life was much simpler back then.
I made maps for Decent, Command and Conquer and Duke 3D. My map for Duke 3D got picked up by some company in Canada and was put on a best of the net CD. I was sent a copy of the CD for payment, Woot ! I also used to do graphics art for a games company called Microforte. I helped them develop an orthographic view game engine which was used on a couple of titles back in those early days. They where fun days. |
