I only have one network cable long enough to get to my router from my room. Its currently plugged into my PC's network card (OBVIOUSLY) I also want to let my XBOX connect to the internets, is there a way I can run a network cable from the XBOX to my PC's built-in network port and have it kinda share the connection, without going directly to the router? If the tech guys at my work werent such USELESS PRICKS I would have 2 network cables long enough and we wouldnt be in this mess :\ |

yeh
enable connection sharing on your currently-plugged-in nic and when it then asks you to pick which other interface you want to share it with, pick the one that you'll plug the xbox into this will cause your second nic to be automatically configured with 192.168.0.1 and a dhcp server will listen on that interface automatically for dhcp requests which will come from your xbox. windows will then do NAT for your xbox automatically but you won't be able to see the xbox from other pc's on your lan |

A cheapo 4 port switch would be much easier. You'd only be talking $30-$40.

Jim's advice is almost working, i think im still doing something slightly wrong but i'll get it eventually, i had the network cards around the wrong way to start off with so that was lol
then i was using a yellow network cable between the XBOX and PC and i dimly recall that was bad cos it was some kind of special cable, so i swapped it and lights came on so that was lol Now the XBOX still cant find an IP but think im really close to solving the puzzle over here More update as they occur |

what ip range are you using on your lan? i have no idea both network connections are currently auto IP, and the advanced thing says DHCP is enabled, no default gateway settings (?) I went through Windows Firewall and clicked on whatever I could find that involved DHCP I had a Hamachi connection that was hogging 192.168.0.1 for a while but thats disabled now computer is prob gonna catch fire now |

thats what i've done with my xbox/wireless network. bridging the network is real easy.
select the two network cards > right click on one of them > bridge connections windows does the rest. |

both network connections are currently auto IP The connection to the xbox should be ip 192.168.0.1 and subnetmask of 255.255.255.0 no default gateway set. |

You didn't do something crazy like disable one of the connections, therefore removing the option of ICS?

If you're directly connecting two devices without a hub or something in between, don't you have to use a crossover cable instead of a regular ethernet cable? That's the only way I've ever been able to network with nothing more than a cable.

That's the only way I've ever been able to network with nothing more than a cable. Depends, most modern NICs are autosensing so you can actually use either. But for any older gear that's certainly the case. |

You could buy a 5-port hub for like $10 from Umart that would provide a better solution.
