Topic: Final point on Goldrush needs to be reworked (TF2)

I haven't got much complaints about TF2, but after playing so much Goldrush I've come to the conclusion that Valve have completely f***ed up the final capture point to a really good map.

It seems like RED can easily defend the final point regardless of the skill of the teams. I see it almost daily when a vastly superior team (wins the first 2 stages in a few minutes) can get held for 10 - 15+ minutes at a poorly designed choke point.

It was always speculation but I never knew Valve keeps global stats for TF2.

http://www.steampowered.com/status/tf2/public_graphs/roundwinpercentagebyteam.png
Something is wrong with Goldrush, it's obviously significantly unbalanced in favour of defence.

FIX IT VALVE!

I'm starting a thread on Steam TF2 forums which I assume will not get very far.

That's an interesting statistic, but I do notice the offense usually don't use all the options available to them on the final stage of Gold Rush. Usually only the odd soldier and spy take the low road, and it should only take 2 ubers max to clear sentries out of the defensive positions.

Usually the only way to cap the first and last points is to kill the whole defense, but on the first point if you kill the defenders, they have to wait 20 seconds and then walk all the way around the map to get back to the cart, by which time you can almost be on the 2nd point.

Also it probably counts servers with instaspawn in which case killing the defense on the last point does f*** all to stave them off.

well, i have always felt the same with goldrush, which is why i tended to not play it often.
the stats seem to also suggest the same, mind you a realy good team will roll it no probs but IRL the other team is utter nubs when that happens so its not like its a "surprise!".

im playing on the goldrush/badwater servers pretty much only atm, and i am enjoy them more and more.

just want some more class unlocks, sick of 2 hit insta death from heavies, and want some retribution.

Are you sure they don't just need a CHUB star on every Blue team?

Most people seem to completely forget about going on the 2 side flanks.

A team only ever seems to win if they take the left side and push from there as well as the main chokepoint.

Also plenty of games have unbalanced maps that is why you change teams at half time. Goldrush pub players never bother taking the two flank routes seriously as already mentioned. I reckon that building which blu can access up the stairs through the mine is the key to winning the prize.

I don't see the point of talking about TF2 "stages" without screenshots.

90% of people don't even keep track of the stages to know which is which, but if you posted a screenshot they'd know exactly which you're talking about and your thread's success level will be greater.

This is goldrush: http://tf2wiki.net/wiki/Image:Gold_Rush_overview.jpg

Here's a video of the 3 stages

There is a lot of interesting stuff you can find out there, like this map showing where the deaths/fighting occurs in gravelpit. Notice almost nobody bothers defending point A.

If anything I'd say the 2nd point needs a revamp, thats generally where most teams get stuck.

Have enough SGs back there at the last CP and its almost impossible. I played yesterday on a 32 player and there was 6 SGs covering the last...

It isn't so much they are hard to destroy, its the fact when there are a few clustered it become impossible to push against the combined fire they put out to get close enough to do a lot of damage.

I was playing medic and had a good demo and with 1 uber we could generally take out 3 or 4 before death but they'd all be back up by the time we got back.

If more people would actually play medic it probably wouldn't be so bad but noone does :(

would take a bit of teamwork and communication to organise a good wave against 6 sentries, a couple spies to sap first, and a couple uber pairs and some extra soldiers/demos with balls for support. Have seen it a couple times, but unfortunatly I was one of the clowns defending with a sentry.

Quick, go tell the guys in the army how their "random damage" makes their job less serious.

(ps. I agree with your post but couldn't resist counter-trolling :P)

crits are taken off for comp/clan play. the skill ceiling isn't low at all, you obviously have never played against any decent players.

then why'd valve put in tourney mode?

hmm yes 2 weapons per class, maps carefully engineered to force spammy combat at chokepoints until someone builds an uber. ive seen "tournament level" tf2 playing and it's just pubby level except the players can aim and they use voicechat.

tf2 isn't more popular than the likes of fortress forever because its packaged with portal (TEH CAKE IS A LIE!!! LULZ!!!) or even because the characters make funny faces. its because joe clicksalot can join a server and go toe to toe with a team of tournament-winning CPMA players.

You sure make it sound compelling. When I watch it it's nothing like that though. It's a badly drawn still drawing of a guy with his mouth open, and like alfoil being dragged around behind him.

Not really, you get 2 or 3 pro players on a team and it's just carnage.

TF2 requires just as much skill as any FPS and a s***load of teamwork.

really, what "tournament level" tf2 have you watched? which teams?

there's f*** all spam in clan play because it's mostly 6v6. if you're gonna troll at least put some effort into it.

i've never seen any random on a pub server go toe to toe with the top players in aus and even look like they have a chance of winning... and i've played against those teams regularly.

the teamwork is actually pretty complex if you watch the top teams, like most team fps games.

failtroll fails.

Hmm well I didn't realise people played Fortress Forever at all, there is no advertising for it, there are no machinima trailers on youtube. I'm getting it now - I had no idea it was a HL2 mod, I thought it was just a modified TFC for the original HL.
There better be servers for it.

hmm yes 2 weapons per class,

2 weapons per class hey? Firstly it's three base weapons per class. Secondly you have more weapons to chose from with some of the classes that have achievement packs.

You've actually played the game, right?

Yeah, there's a whole heap of skills gap to be had in each of the class' very unique melee weapons. For instance,

This makes me further doubt if you've actually played the game, since you'd know how different it is melee attacking as a spy (delayed insta-kill butterfly-knife backstab which blows your disguise - don't do it in front of a sentry unless you plan to circle-strafe insta-sap), heavy (slow movement but powerful punch), scout (fast movement, s***-all bat damage), etc.

Seriously just step away from the keyboard, you're embarrassing yourself.

The thing about the spy's backstab animation is that skilled players can almost always make it almost instant by starting the stab animation facing away from the backstab target and facing it again right as it connects. Granted, there's a skill gap here but it's obviously a bug. Considering how nasty the facing recognition is and how many backstabs youll miss on moving targets over the course of a game I rarely have qualms about exploiting it.

I played around on a server that has the extended backstab animation turned off and it makes the spy alot more fun to play if not a little overpowered. We wouldn't have stafe-jumping in real shooters if not for mechanical oversights like the Spy's backstab animation trick so you can be sure it'll get fixed if it hasn't already. Gotta keep that skill-growth plateau is mirror flat as possible. Valve owns.

Edit: Are you sure you've played TF2 Parabol?

1. Keyboard Warrior

1. A Person who, being unable to express his anger through physical violence (owning to their physical weakness, lack of bravery and/or conviction in real life), instead manifests said emotions through the text-based medium of the internet, usually in the form of aggressive writing that the Keyboard Warrior would not (for reasons previously mentioned) be able to give form to in real life.
