This is a copy and paste of an email I wrote up, saves me writing it again...
I'm writing this in the car on the way to Berlin from Bamberg (4 hour drive), it's Fiona's turn to drive in our shiny Black Mercedes C108, which was the cheapest rental car we could get!. She's also driving because I'm slightly hungover after being out last night at Bamberg's "Sandkerwa" annual festival, sampling lots of food and several beers too many. We got laughed at by a local last night when he asked how fast we'd been on the Autobahns and we answered only 170kph. Going backwards, after a s***house 27 hour flight with 2 stops to refuel in Brunei and Dubai we picked up our little Peugeot 308 rental car and drove straight to Windsor Castle and spent the day sightseeing. We stopped briefly at Guildford on the way to where we were staying in Portsmouth where we were crashing at a friends place at 7pm like a grandma. It was in Portsmouth where I discovered that the poms actually do drink their beer warm, and it was f***ing disgusting, thankfully I found a few places that served them cold though. From there over the next few days we drove around visiting Stonehenge (omg rocks above ground!), The Avebury Stones, Blenheim Palace (where they filmed some bits from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade), Bath, The New Forest, Salisbury and we had to take a slight detour that involved trespassing on private property to go see Mentmore Towers which was used in Batman Begins as Wayne Manor. It was a bit overcast and raining most of the time, but we seemed to somehow time it so it was raining while we drove and stopped when we arrived somewhere. After the UK we flew into Munich and headed straight for the Beer Halls and Gardens, had my first 1 Litre Beer and a massive pretzel. We spent 2 days in Munich and Fiona didn't try a single beer, much to the disgust of the locals and the embarrassment of me. From Munich we drove down to King Ludwigs castles on the alps near Fussen, had some more beer. After that we drove over to Salzburg in Austria because I heard they had more beers there too. We went to the Steigl brewery there and Fiona tried a small sample glass of some beer! But alas it was a lemon Shandy and when I tried it, all I could taste was lemonade. After the sampling of many beers (including a raspberry one) we left to go to Nuremberg to visit the old town and see what remains of the Nazi rally arenas, and drink their beer. That brings us to Bamberg which I covered earlier and we've got 2 days and 3 nights in Berlin before we fly back to London where we'll crash with another friend for 3 days and just check out London itself before flying into Nairobi for the safari. http://www.potatoz.net/images/photatoes/Europe/ForWill-Beer.jpg |

Yeh, the road from Halle (where I'm staying) to Leipzig (where the LGC is) is nuts - the shuttle bus generally chugs along at around 100km/h and there are people that just blow past it so incredibly quickly, it's freaking amazing. The road isn't even that much bigger/wider/straighter than what we have in .au as well - I was sort of expecting it to be massive and straight with really wide lanes.

I arrived in Munich yesterday, went to the Hofbrauhaus (I think it was, giant beer hall) for drinks last night. Beer is amazingly cheap, even in tourist traps.
Keeps raining on me though. Leaving here for Riga in a few days, bet it rains there, too :/ |
