A carefully orchestrated PR exercise garners better results than everyday realworld examples? Well I never!

I think the point was, the people's dislike towards Vista has more to do with what they've "heard" than their own experiences.

surely this proves the counter point though.

ie, that vista is a failure. when you need to do a stunt like this to promote a product.

than their own experiences.

Sure, but this wasn't their own experience - this was Microsoft carefully exposing people to Vista in a controlled setting. This was a Microsoft-delivered experience, not a user's own experience.

I couldn't stand hearing that tripe any longer so I closed it early.

Did they actually give it to the people to use at home/Work with various applications? Or only on their Demo laptop in the demonstration room?

Had sound off aswell (at work) but did the people in question use computers for anything intense (lack of better word) or do they just use it as a word prossor/outlook.

For a while we had the exact same computer specs as the Secretarys (with the exception of Dual Screens) for all our 3D point cloud work and Detail Survey reduction. We often had to wait ages (well ~5min) to rework a TIN which should only take mere seconds because of this. We now have Slightly better computers (and a whole 2GB of ram, which is apparently Massive amounts!)
The point of this rambling is that if all they did was show off 'Perdy Buttons' on a beefed up machine of course it's going to look good and run smooth. 5min playing around in windows is a drop in the water compared to what makes a good OS.

Unfortunatly our next upgrade (set for first quarter next year) is moving onto Vista with out any significant spec boost. Hopefully the SP's will be better for when we do.

Could that have anything to do with the fact that XP was s*** when it was first introduced?

SP's ring any bells?

i reckon most people's 'dislike' towards vista isn't from crappy experiences... it's coz it costs heaps, delivers f*** all & xp still does the job. it's kinda like expecting people to buy a new car of exactly the same model but it's a different colour & costs more.

Everyone knows that there is a general distaste for the word "Vista". I didn't need this website to see it...

Yes Vista is similar to XP, but it is a far better OS. I find the XP gets slower and slower as you use it, while Vista stays quick for a long time.

They should do like the "No more Whoppers thing" except "No more Windows"

customer: "Hi I'd like to buy Windows"
sales guy: "Sorry we don't sell Windows anymore"
customer: "that's fine.."

There were also no where near as many people frequenting the internet when XP came out. Now with the internet a norm in every household, people's opinions spread like wildfire, valid or not.

Not saying Vista is any better or worse, it's just something to consider.

haha a 'far better os' coz it 'stays faster, longer'... a carefully measured experiment in benchmarking i'm sure. you're on crack mongie.

i also find that xp slows down as you gunk it up with random programs n s***... but hey! it's xp... so i can just re-install it without any authentication bs... even on a different machine.

haha mongie faster for longer? even though there was some test somewhere (wish i could find the link again) that xp sp3 is the fastest MS OS.

heres a post i made a while ago on here.

hmm lets weigh them up:

Vista Pros:
New
better 64bit support (so ive been told)
better security (for newbs)
looks 'nice'

Vista Cons:
rapes system
compatibility issues (hardware & software)
dramas
gay networking interface
did I mention slow?
bloaty

XP Pros:
everything works, good support
compared to vista makes love to your system (sp2+)
also can look good
next to no bloat
networking is great and simple (to anyone with half a brain)

xp cons:
old
some 64bit systems have dramas
security dramas (can easily be overcome with free software and updates)

IMO they are both good but vista is better suited to people who are more computer illiterate.

f***, i actually like vista and agree with mongie;

i must be wrong

i find vista to be fast and stable as, once ive turned off all the gay

no issues with drivers for anything (even old joypads), not even for 64bit drivers

no microsoft product really requires a legit serial number - you can just ring them and they will give you one.

Can't say I really agree at all. My system is over 3 years old, and is nice and snappy running Vista 64bit, as well as NEVER having a single hardware compatibility issue. The only software incompatibility I've encountered was when I tried to install Metal Gear Sold 2. I didn't bother trying to troubleshoot it.

And browsing networks is WAY faster for me on Vista than it ever was on XP. Everything pops up almost as fast as browsing a local folder, which is more than I can say with my experiences with XP.

Overall, I don't think Vista is better or worse than XP. I can understand people's hesitation to upgrade to Vista, as it doesn't offer much of an advancement, but I can't say I ever regretted installing it.

I dunno what you guys are talking about, I purchased Vista 64bit Ultimate and have no issues apart from TF2 crashing sometimes on map changes which doesn't bother me as I usually play on static map servers. No compatability issues, everything works. Runs faster than my XP 32bit machine.

There isn't really any reason to use 64bit windows anyway - but yeah - there is no issue with speed or compatibility with Vista... especially post SP1.

Vista is fine. I didn't like it at first because features/things I'd want weren't where I wanted them to be, so it frustrated me. I turned off UAC and changed a few things around, it's find now. Rarely I find a program that I used on XP that doesn't work on vista.

remember everyone having a mega cry when xp was introduced? everyone was all 'windows 2000 for lyfe'.

history repeats itself.

After a service pack or two, XP became very stable and grew in popularity. After SP1 Vista is still crap and hated as ever. Plus I don't remember there being so much talk about downgrading an OS as there has been with Vista->XP.

The misleading "Vista Ready" crap on low-end hardware didn't help either.
is nice and snappy running Vista 64bit, as well as NEVER having a single hardware compatibility issue.

My audio glitched and skipped. It's easy to blame the manufacturer for "crap dirvers" but my Audigy 4 has run flawlessly in XP and Ubuntu. The audio problems are widespread too, not just for me.

Oh and Vista x64's mandatory driver signing is complete and utter bulls***. I'm unable to install a couple of hardware drivers that are fundamentally x64 compatible ... only because the developers (open-source) didn't have the resources to go through the financial and developmental hurdles of MS driver signing. At least give the option of allowing the user to bypass signing .. fkn d*******s.
