Topic: What to buy - DS or PSP?

Looking for some advice regarding whether to purchase a DS or PSP. I've got a fair bit of travel coming up over the next few months, so wouldn't mind having something to play while I'm on planes/waiting in airports, etc. Completely clueless as to the features of either (have briefly played a friend's DS but only Mario Kart from memory). Also what games should I look at? I'm big on sports games (Fifa in particular) but am open to suggestions.

Both are really on the same level as each other in terms of buyable games. Both systems have the same features really so listing them wont be of much help either, but in terms of game appeal I personally go for the PSP. Both system can again play old console games such as the snes, genesis and such, but only the psp can play PS1 games. However I can help a little with some games for the psp to look out for that I loved. I'm as far as one can be from liking sports games so taste may not match at all but they may interest you.

DJ Max Portable - A very addictive music/rythym game. I literally broke my psp playing this game so much.
DJ Max Portable 2 - Both of these are korean so you will have to import, but the psp doesn't have region coding and both games are entirely in english for some reason.
Killzone Liberation - Pretty damn fun top down action game
Loco Roco - Very cute semi puzzle side scroller
Patapon - Part music/rythym, part side scrolling stragegy
Sega Mega Drive Collection - Like 28 games that are pretty fun such as sonic 1 and 2, comic zone and golden axe series
Final Fantasy: Crisis Core - If you ever played and like FF7 then you should play this
Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness - Strategy RPG that is widely considered the best of the genre, ever
Metal Slug Anthology - Will hurt your finger from mashing the button so much. very fun

As for sports only games, a quick venture to IGN or anywhere you prefer in the psp section will give you some ideas how they stack up. Hope this helps a bit

You will get bored of the PSP but the DS has a humongous library of games, combine that with the humongous library of GBA games and you have yourself the anwser.

I disagree. While the PSP now has a decent sized library, a vast percentage of those are games that just don't benefit at all from portable play, ie: cut-down PSX and PS2 ports. The DS on the other hand has a much wider range of unique and pick up and play kinda titles.

If you're getting it for the games, get a DS. If you're more interested in the portable video playing capabilities, get the PSP, it's screen is nice.

This is dopey:

This is more dopey:

This is truth:

I picked up that guitar hero DS pack for $250 (regular DS was $190) to kill time on the train to uni.

Playing that game for one song is equivalent to 10 years of office work.

Completely cripples your hand.

Fun though.

I bought myself a PSP while I was in the US for exactly the same reason you are interested in one. I didn't really look into the DS even though my son has one. Now apart from games and movies I use my Psp to hold music, photos and home video that I have taken. I just use a program called PSP max media manager Pro to transfer pretty well anything I like from my laptop to it.

I originally put a 1Gb memory card into it then found out the Sony 8Gb Sd cards for cameras work in them aswell. There is a 16Gb card to but aparently it doesn't work or so I heard. My Psp also came with a lead to plug into my laptop which also charges the thing. I would recommend buying a second battery for the Psp though because one just isn't enough if you are traveling.

I like my psp alot but if there is one complaint I have with it that would be that I can't crank to volume up loud enough to drown out airport noise and the noise of flying.

o yea when i was traveling PSP was great to store and review photos i was taking as well as mp3/games/movies on train/bus rides. Also got an extra battery and a wireless battery charger which meant my PSP was running hot for over 24 hours. awesome.

protip - if you go PSP make sure you look into which BIOS revisions are flashable and get one off ebay so you can make use of the plethora of homebew apps available otherwise you will be a sucker to sony corp

I'd say DS for games and PSP for media.

Also, if anyone's interested in a 2nd hand PSP (barely played) with 1Gb stick and 3 games (V8 Supercars, Frentix and some FPS type thing) then PM me.

The media thing doesn't really concern me, as I have a video ipod, a laptop and we have a pretty nice digital camera. It's more for the gameplay/time killing, etc.

Thanks for all your help - am going to check out prices of DS at Heathrow this weekend.

Heh, I'm in the UK looking at the DS and PSP as well.

What do they cost in Aus? The DS here is like GBP100 at HMV, which is like AUD$220.
