We were in the middle of lunch yesterday when we heard some strange noises coming from out front of the house. When we went to check, we found this little fella being attacked by a bunch of other birds.

Someone visiting at the time reckoned it didn't look like a native bird, but wasn't sure of the species.

His feathers are still messed up, but otherwise seems ok. I'm trying to identify what kind of bird he is so I can (a) figure out if anyone has lost a bird recently and is trying to find it, and (b) figure out what to feed it etc.

Tried to get better photos but the camera seems to freak him out a bit, and he starts flying around in his cage in a somewhat agitated fashion if I hold it close to the cage so I only took the two shots.

Just finished some googling (only found him yesterday arvo), I think he might be a European Goldfinch. Can anyone confirm?

After looking at the pictures, it seems pretty clear that you've found the right species.
