I've got a car I want to get rid of, because I never drive it, and I don't want to waste money re-registering it this August. Also, I know it wont pass a roadworthy inspection, and I don't want to have to fix it up to be able to sell it. I just want to get rid of it fast, so I was thinking of selling it to a wrecker.

I know I'll get nothing more than a few hundred bucks from a wrecker, but that's fine, but I figure it can't hurt to go to the one that'll give me a little more. What I would like to know is there anyone here who's had experience with wreckers in Brissie? Are there any who will do a better deal than others?

The car is a '92 Magna. The engine, other than needing a service, is absolutely fine. The interior is falling apart, and the paint is f***ed from being parked in the sun 24/7. Would $500 for it be wishful thinking?

I gave my magna away for $40 bucks. Offered it on OCAU and it was gone within a week.

Hmmm, well my mate who had the same make as me sold his to a wrecker for about $150, but the engine was totally f***ed, so I'm kinda hoping that I've got better chances than that. =P

My head gasket blew up. That was the only thing wrong with. Brand new brakes and everything else was in fine order.

I was pretty much told I had to pay to get it towed away and since I didn't want to be out of pocket $40 was great news :D

put it up for sale

just say comes as is, no rego or roadworthy

they can either come and pick it up with a car trailer or you drive it to their place and get someone to pick you up and you take the plates with you and you go and deregister it

When my Astra 86 was on it's last leg I actually donated it to the NATS programe at my previous High School.

Wreckers offered me between $50 and $130. (This was 2001 so 15 years old, similar age to your car) Only thing wrong was that it needed new Brake pads... and it was old.

The reson I didn't give it to the wreckers was because about 14 months previous I had some asshat reverse into my Front and busted out front right Light/blinkers. The replacement cost $45. Now I still had that same part in my car, perfectly fine. So they would make their money back in just 2 parts (front Right+Left lights) which I thought was retarded.

Maybe see if you can sell parts on ebay/similar if your really interisted in more money?

Also, Head gaskets can cost alot of money to fix, especially if they stuff other things when they blow. Rest of the parts would have made money for the wreckers though.

Thanks for the input.

Yeah, I know how much it can cost to fix a head gasket, absolutely insane. For some reason, it hadn't occurred to me to just sell it as-is without a roadworthy cert/rego. Do people go for that? Because I'd be pretty happy if I could get rid of it for $500 or so. Anyone here want it? =P

This is going to sound noob, but I'm not sure if it is. I'll have to check, but if you're serious, and it is 2.6L with EFI, it's yours for $200.

EDIT: I know it's an SE, and according to Wikipedia, the SE's are all 2.6 with EFI. Let me know if you're seriously interested.

Ebay it. I had a car that I had an accident in a while back (no insurance, just bomb insurance), un-registered, and needed work. It was a 1992 subaru enduro, I put it up for a two week auction and got $900 I was stoked.
Wreckers were going to charge me $50 to take it away.

Okay, just called Boss Wrecking, and they reckon they'll give me $150 for it. How the hell did you get $500?

He's an amway user Midda, I'm sure there's something he has done which has effectively made it $500.

reso your highlarious.

i got 500 hundred cause they can sell if for over 5k in just parts hell the shell alone is worth a got 1k. it all depends on the type of car and the demand for it at the wrecker you take it to.

fpot i'm 99% sure he doesn't read qgl regularly, the only reason he signed up was for that thread which teq would have linked him to on irc when they argue

Ah Midda, I'm pretty sure fpot was joking. Though he may know some decent wreckers I'd doubt you'll get a reply from him any time soon.
