dont know what the AMD chips run like, but if u turn the res & detail down a bit should be ok.

i run a Q6600 (quad 2.4)
2gb DDR2 800
8800GT and it runs very nicely on 1600x1200 full detail.

and i assume ur running vista if ur gonna upgrade to 4gb ram right ?

4gigs of DDR is pretty expensive. ~$155 for a 2gb kit.

It might be worth looking in to buying a new system :/

dont know what prices youre looking at reso but www.msy.com.au lists 4gig DDR 2 kits for under 100 bux

If i get a new system im gonna get

4gig ram
asus p5k SE mobo
9800GTX card
and e8400 cpu
160gig seagate 7200rpm drive

ASUS P5K-SE - $103
Seagate SATA 250G -$63
E8400 INTEL - $218
4G Kit-800(2x2G) A-data - $91
Coolermaster Extreme 550W - $72
512M 9800GTX Leadtek - $362

= $909 dollars, that makes me qq

how

The "4gigs of DDR" prices, as reso mentioned. DDR2 is way cheaper but no use if the system doesn't support it. Especially when you said:

SO, you're saying i should spend MORE money on 4 gigs of DDR 400, when i could buy DDR2 that will run IDENTICALLY and essentially act as DDR 400 ram?

or is this new DDR2 ram not backward compatible like the whole of DDR ram has been since it came out?

is this new DDR2 ram not backward compatible

Not compatible, it's a new standard and the pin-out is also physically different so it wouldn't even fit.

I have a similar system... sorta...

Athlon x2 3800+
2GB Ram
8600GT.

It runs pretty s***. I have lots of detail turned down and I get 20-40FPS. In busy areas it drops to 5-10FPS.

I'd be just getting a video upgrade to start with, at least you can move it over to a new system.

Gigabyte 3870's are ~ $169 at CA.

the only way you'll get your whole 4gig to work is with a 64-bit version of vista or xp.

32 bit windows requires a portion of the capacity of a 32-bit address to be reserved for devices and whatnot. So anything above [x] address doesnt count as availble room for normal memory addresses so it chops of at about 3.5gb or something.

3870 = ATI card.

About to be superceded, but for $169 its pretty good value. I'd say it would run AoC without any problems. Then, if you upgrade... you can have up to 4 of them with CrossFireX :D

I have practically the same specs except I run at 1680x1050 for WS. I did the whole turn on high and turn off shadows thing and it sits me at about 60fps.

Definitely recommend a 9800GTX card. They kick a lot of ass and are damn cheap.

They're hardly worth the extra cost considering how close to it's performance the 8800GT's and GTS 512 are.

I take that ^ back... they're pretty damn cheap!

i run amd x2 6000+ dd2 4gig 8800gts 512

i play on high settings everything maxed 1680x1050 windows vista 64bit
50-60fps on average
can drop to 30-40 in some graphic intense areas (but that is still quite playable and generally i dont even notice the drop when it happens)

had 6 man group doing SOTB's (low level group dungeon) and didnt have any graphical lag at all.

open areas are fine aswell.

only problems i get is when im in a closed area with lots of *fire* (one particular house in the nobel district gives me terrible frames)

i was playing the game originally on dd2 2gig, the difference from that and 4gig was considerably better load times (which is kind of important considering the world is instanced)

hmmmmmmmmmm

i think what im gonna do is this

this week, upgrade my motherboard, cpu and ram to what i said

then in another week or 2, do the PSU, HDD and video card

my next question is, theres alot of "generic" brand s*** around now. like a generic video card is 50 bucks cheaper then the same vid card in asus version

is it still worth going with the best brands? or are those days sorta over in pc hardware?

thanks guys

remember you'll have to format again if you chuck another hdd in there. you should do the hdd and mobo at the same time.

I am in the same boat but my current system is slighty better:

I have a:
- x2 3800+
- 7600gt - Upgrading this arvo do i get 9800gtx $350, 8800gt or 9600gt $220
- 1gig ddr2 - Upgrading this arvo to 4gig Ddr2

Will have to upgrade to Vista aswell i guess.

What i want to know is which vid card for the dollars. I can almost buy two 8800gt's and SLI forthe price of the 9800gtx.

My specs are; E8400, 2Gb DDR2, 512Mb 8800GT and am able to run AoC at 1680x1050 on High settings with shader model thingie on 3.0 and all the glam features with a constant FPS of around 45-50.

My vote would be a single awesome video card over SLI'ing 2 cheaper cards. Out of that list though, I wouldn't bother with the 9600GT.

so the 9800gtx is a good card? I can afford to go up to that budget really

Its an OK card. Its not a lot faster than the current 8800GT's.

The nVidia GTX 280 and 260 come out on the 17th. I'd wait for the associated price drop on all of the other cards.

I think you'll find ATI becoming stronger in the near future. They are moving more towards distributed processing... it will all become quite interesting in the near future I feel.

Ended up buying:

- x2 6000+

Runs like a dream, and enjoying the combat system compared to wow.

Looks nice but I still would have gone the 9800GTX

8-)

my specs atm

- 9800GTX
- nVidia XFX mobo
- Intel E8400 3.0GHz
- 4gig DDR2 RAM

I'm hoping to grab another 9800 card and going SLI down the track maybe. My mobo supports 3 gfx cards but thats f***ing silly

LOL

yeah that card is like an extra 150 bux i didnt really wanna spend

iv looked at heaps of benchmarks and the 9800gtx is marginally better, not really worth 150 dollars when youre a 3rd year apprentice :)

I agree and I'm sure this upgrade is gonna be awesome anyway from what you have already. As long as you have fun that's the main thing.

similar setup to mine exis, Asus P5K-SE rocks for a cheap board. Not too bad for overclocking if u wanna squeeze a bit more outta ur chip aswell, just need a bigger heatsink/fan.

I ended up getting a higher clocked 8800GT (cant remember brand was Z something) coming in at 700mhz / 2000mhz out of the box, seems to run a bit better than my mates so just somethin u might wanna consider.

what kindof case are you getting aswell? youll need a decent sized one to fit ur vid card, i found my antec 900 series very nice.. cooling is awesome. if u wanna go all out coolmaster make some stupidly awesome cases which come with a nasty price tag.

one last thing - youd be nuts to get a 250gb with the price of the 500/750gb atm imo, but all in all thats a very decent budget PC.

There's an option to do a scan of local files and repair them, maybe that might help.

I'm a but dirty over the twice weekly maintenance at 9pm our time.. that is enough to make me want to give it up.

I'm going to get an upgrade soon so conan runs better but not sure about the graphics card just yet. the 8800 and 9800 seem to run about the same, with the 8800 apparantly doing better at higher res with AA turned on. That and i'm running on the budget so the less i spend the better. Not sure what i'm gonna get though. any ideas?

1440x900. Max my wide screen will allow. Unfortunately all the reviews i've been able to find are always in stupid reses like 1280 or 1600. Why don't they do wide screen tests?

This game is so random it just amazes me :D

So here I was playing this game on a laptop, 2.2ghz core 2 duo, 3gb ram, 8600mgt 256mb and vista. The performance was kind of ok, I didnt really feel that it ran like s*** till fighting in the keep in tortage where it would drop to like 5fps. Once I got out of tortage the fps was unbearable so started to google.

Googleing showed that people have in short done this:

- set quality to high
- set shader 2.0
- disable shadows

voila an increase of an extra 10-20fps so its playable now! To those that have gone out and upgraded or thinking about it try the settings, the game looks quite good at these settings so can get away without upgrading.

im sorry, but i refuse to disable shadows in a game.

i dont care if it still looks "quite good"

Thats fine then, but I refuse to waste hundreds of bux just to make the game run when I can just run it on my laptop.
