There's a very scientific way in which they were able to find this out.

There's a few uncontacted peoples still about, the Andaman Islands have a few tribes (used to be more), the Sentinelese are probably the most famous, really aggressively isolationist, nothing much known etc. Shot up some fisherman with arrows who came to close (illegally close) to their island, then drove off the helicopter that came to retrieve the bodies with even more arrows.
