ok, theres been some spirited talk in my office lately on various subjects:
i think im right on all of them, and im yet to be proved wrong: 1) mp3s vs cds, can you tell the difference just by listening? no, of course you cant. 2) making an instant coffee, it tastes different if you put the milk in first you are an idiot if you believe this, i always go out of my way to make coffees with hotwater first for idiots that claim "it ruins the coffee" and a new contender 3) different colour m&ms taste different no they dont are you right or wrong? |

1) I agree
2) I don't drink coffee, so I'm not sure, but I see no reason why the order would make a difference 3) I usually eat m&ms a few at a time, so it's not something I've ever really considered. |

2) making an instant coffee, it tastes different if you put the milk in firstIt does taste different if you put the milk in first - it tastes worse. If you put the milk in first it makes the coffee/sugar clump together and not dissolve properly, and makes the coffee taste like s*** (well even more s*** than an instant coffee tastes already) |

1) on lower quality MP3s (128kbps or below) using ear-bud headphones you can hear the compression.
2) instant coffee can not be made any better. its like trying to polish a turd 3) they the all taste the same. |

1) mp3s vs cds, can you tell the difference just by listening? If it's a 128kbps mp3, many people can. Once you hit 192kbps, I bet you even the most lunatic audiophiles will screw up in a blind (deaf?) test. |

yea you can... 2) making an instant coffee, it tastes different if you put the milk in first ok your kinda correct in that instant coffee is fairly poor tasting. However you can make bad coffee taste even worse by pouring boiling hot water straight on the coffee. you burn the coffee and you can taste that. 3) different colour m&ms taste different they are def all the same! |

In all my years of making instant coffee I have never 'burnt' it with boiling water.

2) making an instant coffee, it tastes different if you put the milk in firstI guarantee that I can tell the difference with this. I always put the milk in first. As mentioned, it burns the coffee if you don't. The other two I agree with, although the MP3 one would depend on the quality of the MP3. M&Ms tasting different? Puhlease! |

1) I can't tell the difference between a very good, high kbps encode and a cd
2) Don't drink coffee, no idea 3) I think they might, i'd have to sample to check. |

1) mp3s vs cds, can you tell the difference just by listening? Of course you can, see you failed to qualify that by stating the quality of the mp3. If I give you 32k mono mp3 done using recording a cd source via analogue then converted that mp3... I'd even say you can tell on a 128k CBR mp3 on music that has a large dynamic range (eg. Floyd).
It may be possible, if the water was so hot as to burn the milk, and putting it in the cup lets it cool enough to not burn the milk. But still unlikely. Maybe someone with supermans pallete could tell the difference.
No idea, it all depends on whether the food dyes have a descernable flavour or not. Along with the pallete of the eater. ie. a smoker prolly can't tell the difference between a roo pellet and an m&m. |

1) You can but only depending on the quality of the ripped MP3s
2) Wouldn't make any different, instant coffee is s*** anyway. 3) Agreed. |

I have heard about 2) in the context of tea as well. I tend to alternate doing it with my tea depending on what is the optimal creation procedure (eg sometimes its more efficient to put milk in first because the milk is already out). I don't notice any difference in quality either way.

1) Depends on the audio being converted. I myself can't tell the difference, however someone that I know who has excellent ears has passed the blind test easily at 128kbs.
2) It depends on the heat of the hot water. 3) Different colour m&m's taste the same, unless you have some sort of Synesthesia and can taste colours. Also your perception of what you are eating has an impact on its taste, so if people really believe they taste different they just may to them. |

1) yeah on good system
2) dont drink coffee 3) the only reason they think that is from the placebo effect of eating a "red" m&m, i saw some show they did a test with ppl who thought they could taste the diff.. blind folded them and gave them one at a time, they were all s*** and got none right |

Instant coffee is roasted at around 165C, I doubt boiling hot water would burn it. I've always thought that you need to make a slush of coffee and then add the milk.
and on the topic of instant coffee tasting s*** I think its pretty damn good. |

I think that the coffee thing is because if you put milk in first you tend to put more in. This naturally makes the nasty instant coffee less bitey.

1) mp3s vs cds, can you tell the difference just by listening? on a decent system or headphones you can unless the mp3 is 320kbs. 320kbs, vinyl and cd all sound pretty much the same unless you have that freaky condition where you can see sound as colours or you're listening on the worlds best sound system or something. |

2) I'm personally a fan of the milk in first proceedure, you'll find the coffee to be a little more bitter than usual if you pour boiling water in first. Personal choice though, i am quite addicted to coffee atm and have been drinking tea to substitute lately..
Trog:- If you want to taste your tea properly u should definately put boiling water in first.. and let it perculate for a good few minutes. |
