I'm with Suncorp and as much as their Direct Visa Debit card pwns, bank fees pwn me more. Even using Suncrop ATMs (which are few and far between) I still end up getting hit with fees when I go over a "limit" of withdrawals. I also get fees after I hit a limit on cash withdrawals via EFTPOS purchases:(

I have a sub-account with 5.25% interest rate for my savings, but I often need to transfer money between this account and my main spendings account. As far as I can tell, I don't get charged for these online transfers.

1) Do any other banks have the direct visa debit card?
2) Which banks have a high interest rate for savings account but let you freely transfer money in and out? (What is the minimum limit on these accounts?)
3) Do any accounts come without gay gay fees even when sticking to that bank's ATM's?

I'm with ANZ. Got myself a visa debit card, unlimited transactions online and at their own ATMs. Monthly fee is $3 for students (double if not). Rocks since they have a branch at UQ. Not sure about interest rates and stuff.

parabol - so you just pay $3 per month, and you have unlimited ANZ withdrawals?! Did you have to pay a fee for the card upfront?

What about EFTPOS/cash withdrawals?

Yep just $3/month. Unlimited ATM transactions. No fee for the card as far as I can remember.

Not sure about EFTPOS withdrawals. I tried at woolworths and the chick said that I can't do a "cash advance with a credit card". Maybe she didn't understand what type of card I had, but I assumed after that point it wasn't possible on debit cards at all and I haven't tried since. Are you saying you can ?

Also are you seriously about getting hit with online banking and ATM fees. wtf??!?

i have nab savings card (not sure about visa debit, i guess they have that option too) and pay $0 as a student. the online savings account ("iSaver") is afaik at 7.05% interest and the transfers between these 2 accounts are instant.

online trading is also a breeze with nab

I just started one of those 'force you to save' accounts with ANZ. Also have a visa debit and visa low yearly fee card.

Unsure about atm fees sorry. All I know is that ANZ > NAB why I changed although I assume they would have a visa debit now so meh

the Suncorp Visa Debit card works just like a normal EFTPOS card, with the extra option of being able to use it as a VISA which takes the money straight from your primary savings account.

I don't get hit with online banking fees unless I do external transfers which incur ~$1 fee.

ANZ rawks for their $6 unlimited visa debit card crap.

Why do you say it's $6 and Mr H says it's $3? Are you not a student?

Also, in regard to the 5.25 "high interest" account: there's no minimum limit for it which is why it's so low, I assume.

I'm with St George...

I get a VISA debit card linked to my normal account. I also have a separate savings account (current interest rate is 7% pa). I can transfer money between the 2 account as much as i please (really easy to do online).

Since i'm a student, there are no base fees... the only fees i might pay are for using non St George ATMs for withdrawals and stuff like that (that said, i do get a small amount of free withdrawals from other ATMs.. 4 a month i think).

I have accounts with ANZ and Commbank ... ANZ is the more crap of the 2. ANZ's net bank is significantly more painful and has less information. And branch staff at ANZ seem a lot less interested then most (which is tuff given how useless banks are at customer service in the first place).

eg. Went to cash in my coin stockpile (I never use coins) and ok it was a Friday arvo but still in business hours. ANZ wouldn't do it and even if I had come earlier they wanted it all bagged and crap, walked out down the way and into Commonwealth, straight through cha ching $580+ straight in to my account (I really dislike coins).

Missus had issues with Westpac with them giving out personal details to a random ... awesome! and my old man had trouble with Westpac as executor of grandads will (he was an only child and grandma died years earlier). So I'd skip Westpac.

QTCU was pretty good, they used to have no fees if your pay was being paid in directly... but they lack branches near work and live.

somewhat unrelated (and hey - what a comment from me without a de-rail attempt).

Queensland Teachers Credit Union turned me down for a $5k loan towards a $10k car last week. I bust my arse scrapping together my $60k a year (2 jobs - one full time, 2nd is contract), but with 3 dependants and being a renter (which is less than paying off a mortgage) that just wasn't enough. Fair enough - the Mrs is still @ uni. I sure learnt something new there.. my parents didn't have this hassle.

Ironically, I had to take funds out of the portfolio to pay cash for our new family wagon on Sunday. I gotta say I didn't really expect that, and I'm just a bit pissed off about it

We're switching over to St George this week.

Be careful when a student says "no transaction fees"

I also had no transaction fee's for many many years while i was with commbank, because i was a student (at uni). I believe all banks can't charge more than an annual normal fee, no per-transaction fee's.

I think you'll find just about every bank will sting you fees for too many transactions billy. I'm yet to come across one that won't, what you have to avoid are the ones that charge you stupid fees like some charge you for netbank transfers etc.

That said, i have never checked out BoQ's cards, so they may be transaction fee free.

I'm very happy with Westpac. I used to have Commonwealth but pulled my accounts cos the fees stank. I've also worked at commonwealth before too and their fees etc are horrible.

I think BankWest might be one of the best banks now, just going from their commercials etc.

Also, try and find a bank you like now and stick with it. Have ALL your accounts there. They take all your history etc into account when you apply for loans etc so it's very helpful - I've seen it make the difference many times. You can also get 'packages' where you pay a certain fee and you get lower % loans and all sorts of discounts. Definitely something to do when you get a home loan and other stuff.

NAB have "Gold Banking" - Visa Debit + Unlimited transactions (everything, including using other bank's atm's) for 12/month. It is more expensive than other banks, but considering I know I like to use ANY atm, it sure is handy.

I'm with BoQ and am generally happy with them. They have a newish savings account type called "reverse charges" where there's no bank fees (I think there's still some if you withdraw from another ATM, not sure), if you have < $2k in your account it's like a $4/month fee, but if you have > $2k in your account they pay you $2 (whoopee!). Their service is always good, except they don't do coins like CBA like Obes was talking about hehe. Their credit cards are pretty average though.

O... I stupidly read that as it's unlimited for twelve months... $12 a month is currently less than I pay in fees per month. What are their internet banking fees like?

Free use of atm although they ask that you don't check you balance becaus eit costs them money.

and so forth...

I'm with NAB eBanking, it's 4 dollars per month, but if you have a salary which is over $2,500 per month deposited in there the 4 dollar fee is waived. So i get my salary deposited in there then I transfer it to my mortgage account, win win.

I just got an ANZ Visa Debit account for $3 per month. Unlimited everything ANZ including internet transfers to external accounts. Obviously, outside ATM's incur a fee.

I've never heard of a bank charging you to do their f***ing job for them by using the f***ing internet. That just blows my mind. BTW, I'm with St George and use their DragonDirect thing linked to our other accounts. Also have all the kids saving accounts in there. I was thinking about the ANZ fee free dealie, cause I use other banks ATMs. That's the only fee I get hit with, and it can certainly add up.

And another thing, is anyone old enough to remember when banks didn't charge you anything? I mean nothing at all, not even for a card or a bank book or performing transactions or having an account or anything. They used to say "thank you for letting us look after your money, here have some interest... and a myer gift voucher for opening account with us". Now that banking is almost entirely electronic, they try and charge you for everything?!

Pet hate of mine...

Just remember to pop in once a year with your student card to prove you're still a student :)

I moved from Commbank to Citibank a bit over a year ago.

$5 a month unlimited transactions, use of any banks ATM, over the counter banking at aus post outlets and also at NAB. Linked savings account @ 8%. Linked chequebook.

Also have a Citibank BP mastercard where I get 5% of fuel and 1% rebate on all other purchases on the card.

Blows Commbank out of the water
