Nice descriptive thread.
Use H.264 for the video stream. |

h264 is probably the most efficient if you have CPU power to burn. Otherwise try Xvid.

CoreAVC is great for 264 stuff, more than halves your CPU usage in some cases, but it isn't free.

Just FYI, my setup is pretty basic. I use Media Player Classic, ffdshow and CoreAVC and can pretty much play everything I've ever had.
The setting up of MPC can be a little tricky and you will sometimes need to add external filters with the preferred set on them for them to work properly. |

Isn't coreAVC just for decoding? I assumed he wanted to encode

Believe so. He wasn't very specific at all in the first post so WHO KNOWS!?!?!
Also he mentioned minimal so I thought he might have meant "least s*** to install to watch videos". |

another vote for ffdshow+coreavc
no one wants a minimal encoder, they want a fast whizzbang encoder. minimal implies playback |

Okay, I thought you wanted to encode 720p video, not play it back. I'm really not sure what's the most efficient to use, but I don't think 720p is really that CPU intensive. Tried VLC?

Minimal is not equal to zerohahaha.. f*** you, I was gunna say that. Is it possible though, that the minimal amount of something may actually be zero? |

But saying you have a minimal amount of something, implies you actually have SOME of what you are talking about. If you have a minimal amount of apples, you have at least SOME apples, otherwise you would say you have no apples.

no one wants a minimal encoder, they want a fast whizzbang encoder.never even crossed my mind he might be referring to decoders; I'd never even thought that there was enough difference between decoder performance to warrant considering changing. I just use VLC and it plays everything I want, although I have a pretty decent processor in my home PC. The only time I'd think of it is on embedded-type devices like my XBMC, which can't play HD content. |

I'd never even thought that there was enough difference between decoder performance to warrant considering changing This is a perfect example of a minimal difference and the fact that minimal is different to 0. QED props trog |
