A NEW Australian-developed contraceptive jab for men, taken four times a year, has been proven to be just as effective as birth-control pills for women.

Sydney researchers found the hormonal injection is a quick and reliable method of contraception for up to 95 per cent of males.

Until now, the only effective non-barrier contraceptive for men was a vasectomy.



Made up of a combination of the hormones androgen and progestin - mostly testosterone - it needs to be administered every two to three months. The new jab works by suppressing sperm output but does not have a permanent effect.

The pill has well documented behavioral side affects in many women, some obviously more severe than others. Men aren't as prone to big mood swings as women, so its possible that the side effects of this new treatment would be close to zero. Not saying ill be first to volunteer, but if it gets off the ground, could be something to explore. A needle every 3 or 4 months wont kill you sheesh.

Increased muscle growth, higher sex drive, (body)hair growth might increase a bit.. POSSIBLY a little bit more agression, but i doubt its anything that would be incontrollable. will have to wait and see ^_^

It's great that they've developed this, but I think girls would be stupid to rely on guys telling them they've been having the shots done. Ultimately, if the contraceptive fails (or isn't there) it's the girl who's going to end up s*** creek so I think it should ultimately remain our responsibility to provide our own contraceptive. Unless I was actually dating the guy I would never trust that he was the injections done when you've got nothing but his word. At least with something like implanon you can actually see the rod inside their arm.

men are less likely in my opinion to lie about it, it's *more often than not* (not saying always) the girl that is clingy and gets knocked up on purpose whilst telling her partner shes on the pill

Yea, I can see what you're saying, what I mean is, girls would be stupid to rely on a male contraceptive, at the end of the day they're the ones who risk getting pregnant, it should be their responsibility to protect themselves/their body etc. Not saying that men are necessarily going to do the dirty on them or whatever, but it's their body, and they should be responsible for it.

If you werent in a relationship - you would be (or at least should be) using other/multiple forms of contraception anyway. In the case of a relationship its going to be either one or the other taking responsibility for the contraception - I dont see why it couldnt be the guy.

I havent taken the pill in years because of the side effects - I get extremely moody and depressed (nobody needs that, Im moody enough as it is ;)), I do put on weight, especially in the...ergm...chest area (also dont need that), and there are other undesired side effects Im not going to get into on here.

All and all I think its time we try an alternative!

Also - perhaps we could substitute grape with lemon/lime? Tasty treat.

Yeah, GP I can definitely see why you would rather an alternative for the pill, I have definitely suffered side effects for various forms of the pill. I seem to do okay on Estelle though.
