hey guys I'm looking to upgrade my internet connection I'm currently on Tel$tra 128k adsl(26~kb/s dl) or some s***house connection. I live in upper coomera and I've heard different stories about ADSL and how its slow if your not close to something? Cable isnt an option as we are renting here.

Im really looking for best value but might be open to other options so I can play games online again at a good speed. I do a fair bit of downloading per month but probably around or under 12gig.

We have a 6 month contract at this house so is it possible to get something not on a contract??

I'm a noob when it comes to adsl so any help is muchly appreciated.

For what it's worth, I had cable hooked up when I used to rent, in the two premises prior to building my own place. I just asked if I could get cable/foxtel and they said sure.

Maybe someone should post a thread about speed test results from different ISPs

I'm on TPG, performance wise its excellent
technical/customer service wise you would be better off calling the guy who once explained how the internet is like a series of a tubes

that being said since I got connected I havent had to call, thank christ.

I usually recommend Internode for these reasons:

1. Damn reliable
2. Very gamer-friendly (servers + file mirroring + proactive with community)
3. Don't count uploads
4. Good free-traffic zone
5. Don't need to bundle phone for a good plan/price.

Some ISPs meet a couple of these points, but rarely all five.

I'm with TPG ADSL. I've had a few very rare problems where id have issues with connecting to the servers really late at night for about 10 minutes. The worst had been a few hours. That has only happened about three times in 2 years so its nothing to complain about.

TPG is just fine, I churned from Internode when TPG got their act together and made the exchange ADSL2 capable. Speed is around 700-800kb/s

I'm getting 20gb more peak, and 110gb off peak, + the faster speeds for the same price as 20gb/150k downloads at internode.

Ahh yes, TPG tech support is rather mediocre, still the price is right.

How is p2p traffic?

TPG also use a transparent proxy do they not?

By 'any' you probably mean 'some', like Telstra and Optus for example.

iiNet, Internode, TPG at least have only a 6-month term on the regular plans from what I can see (I think due to Telstra charges), usually costs ~$70 to break out <6 months. Still cheaper than paying out the remaining months which long-term contracts ask you to do if you decide to leave, or paying an insane up-front amount to be on a month-to-month contract (have a look at Optus).

So my iiNet contract is up and I just checked out internode, it says that naked adsl2+ is available but normal adsl2+ is 'planned'? wtf.

I use Exetel, resold Optus ADSL2+. $85pm for 72Gb downloads (upload not counted)excess charged $3 per gig and it includes my line rental. Lets assume I only upload 20Gig of data on bigpond cable extreme (which I can get at my house) this type of plan would cost - $4930pm. Even if I assume I don't upload data I would still be paying $1930. Based on the 60gb plan and excess usage charges. Gee telstra sure are good value.

well ive had a look through the TPG website and I like the look of the ADSL2+ Medium/25GB setup.

How can I find out how far I am away from the nearest exchange? do I have to have a active phone line in the house because I really want to leave telstra

It will depend on the type of modem you have, if you can log into the modem and it tells you your line attenuation you can make a rough calculation off that. Alternatively do a search over at whirlpool, they have a wiki with all the exchanges and locations listed, then just do a google maps directions between your house and the exchange, won't be entirely accurate but would give you a distance somewhere within 1km I expect.

yes, you could do horrible horrible calculations like that or you could simply go here and put in your address
